Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system …
It was recently brought to my attention by a Clarkstown Central School District official that somebody has a problem with me using the Mall Rats nickname when writing about the combined efforts of North and South on the ice.
So we’re clear, it’s never been a derogatory term.
We call dedicated hockey players rink rats. The mall is a place kids from both schools frequent, so when the district merged the hockey programs a couple of years ago without providing a nickname, I filled the void. The official that I spoke with is rather insistent we cease and desist.
I’m not going to promise never to use Mall Rats again.
That being said, I’m not looking to offend and I will attempt to find a compromise. I was informed that getting the school board to vote on a nickname is quite an ordeal, so let’s pitch in. After spending a couple of hours online, I’ve come up with four legitimate options.
Colonels – Rockland County was crawling with them during the American Revolution.
Mad Ants – Take a minute and Google Anthony Wayne.
Rams – The nickname used by Clarkstown High School before North and South were in the picture.
River Pirates – Were there any of these on the Hudson River?
Go ahead, pick a favorite and I’ll use the most popular nickname on the blog when I write about Clarkstown in the future, like Saturday when I cover the big game against Scarsdale. The poll function is not working on this blog, so vote by leaving a comment below.
