You only need to take one step inside Hommocks Park Ice Rink to realize that everything is different.
A long list of improvements have been made to the facility, starting with the ice.
There’s a new refrigeration system in place. Town officials might boast about the efficiency of the equipment that will allow the rink to operate year round, but Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli is talking about the faster surface.
“The ice is hard as hell,” he said after practice on Tuesday. “We have real glass, high glass all the way around. We might have to change how we play a little.”
Chiapparelli put the price tag at $2.3 million.
It’s a little colder in the building, which is a fair tradeoff. The ceiling has been relined and the lighting is outstanding now. New rubber has been laid outside the rink. The bleachers were also refurbished.
The Tigers are beginning to raise $100,000 to redo the locker rooms.
