Here’s a development that deserves some polite applause.
Remember how Queensbury last March walked right into the semifinals in Utica? The Spartans only won five games. Queensbury didn’t have to play for a sectional title because there are no other Division II teams in Section 2 and the school had a regional bye.
To end that nonsense, a proposal to add one at-large team was presented last week in Albany during the NYSPHSAA executive committee meeting, and it passed.
Starting this season, there will be one additional team in Division II, and the at-large bid will rotate. Section 3 is up first and will its runner-up to play the Section 1 champion on March 7, 2015. The winner goes to Utica.
We don’t usually see this kind of improvement because it adds expense, but it’s the right thing so the folks involved deserve kudos.
