Let’s make a little noise for the names that follow.
And how about some polite applause for the kid left off the list? I love that All-Section is limited to a 17 select players because it adds credibility to the honor. The selection process for All-League is where I have an issue.
Where in the hell is Phil Variano?
I hate to drop names on the blog, but he’s the latest example of a deserving player left off because of a stupid rule. Back in 2010, Section 1 adopted a policy that limits the number of All-League selections based on the size of the league. That’s not a horrible idea because too often we hand out trophies just for showing up. The problem is, league standings then determine how the All-League selections are divided up.
Here’s the problem, the Tigers were a fourth-place team in a league that includes Pelham, Scarsdale and Mamaroneck. Let’s see, that’s two sectional champions and two more semifinalists. It was the best league in the section this season by a lot.
So what happens?
White Plains, a 15-6-1 team that lost in the semis in a back-and-forth game with Suffern, gets as many all league picks as Ossining. Pawling and Hen Hud each got four players named All-League. I think in this instance the powers that be need to add the section’s fifth-leading goal scorer to the list, and that can be done without damaging the integrity of the award.
You can find the complete list of All-League players and special award winners at Section1Hockey.com.
Again, you know the rule that I hold everyone to when it comes to postseason honors, you can add the names of those you feel deserved a nod, but do not disparage anyone that earned recognition.
