Here’s something else to cheer for …
USA Hockey announced the men’s and women’s Olympic teams amidst the hoopla of this afternoon’s Winter Classic, and the area is well-represented. Kevin Shattenkirk, a 24-year-old defenseman from New Rochelle, and Josephine Pucci, a 23-year-old defenseman from Pearl River, are heading for Sochi.
Both have significant national team experience.
Shattenkirk, who plays for the St. Louis Blues, left the Brunswick School to play for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program before heading for Boston University. He’s played in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championship in 2009 and the Men’s World Ice Hockey Championships in 2011. Shattenkirk tweeted a reaction a short time after the announcement.
“I am extremely honored to be a part of this team and represent this great country in Sochi! This is a dream come true! #USA #BringHomeGold”
Pucci, who had to put her collegiate career at Harvard on hold after suffering a third concussion, has been competing on the international stage since 2010. She played in the Women’s World Championship in 2010 and 2011.
The women open Feb. 8 against Finland. The men open Feb. 13 against Slovakia.
