Suffern vs W.G for the finals. Suffern repeats
I honestly think both section 1 teams have a chance at winning states, wouldn’t that be something!! Lets go Suffern and JJ!!
Jay has an easier game, Queensbury is very young and certainly down from years past
I’m sure one of you guys can answer a couple of “States – D1” questions
#1 Why are there only 8 sections in the tournament?
#2 How is the quartefinal seeded?
#3 Who does MW have to beat out to be Sec 9 champ?
#4 Has anybody ever suggested that a Section with 16 D1 teams might deserve to have their runnerup have a play in game against Sec 9 winner (where I assume competition is pretty thin).
Thanks in advance!
Answer to #3. MW has to beat the same team Ithaca in section 4 beats. Nobody. Automatic bid.
#4 I don’t know if what you suggest has been brought up. However, I do think that both Ithaca and MW should have to play to get into the quarters. Not sure I agree with selecting a team just because of the number of teams in that section. I would be more interested to see two teams selected that were the two best that did not win their sectional playoff. I’m sure that would open a can of worms.
Some sections don’t have teams to compete, they play club level and are not sponsored by their schools. No long island, southern tier, and only woodbury and ithaca from their sections.
HkyDad’
I do not know an answer to your question #4 but it is a good one. NYSPHSAA has enough data to gauge whether a section needs to play a runner up from a nearby section that has historically done very well. It could work for or against a section. Right now, it seems it would work in Section 1’s favor.
I wish they still had the outbracket for Section runner-ups. That was such an exciting week of hockey leading up to the quarterfinals. Obviously due to travel costs and such, it is very difficult to bring this back but I recall back in 06-07? Clarkstown North playing 3 games in six days, crossing all over the state to fight their way to the quarters and then were defeated by Canton in a hard-fought game. Suffern made it to the Frozen Four that year, would have been awesome if two Section 1 teams had made it that year.
Can’t wait for suffern toga !
I love hockey.
The out bracket was there only because Monroe Woodbury was playing down in division 2. Once they were forced to play in D1. The out racket wasn’t necessary.
Saratogawont be easy for suffern but suffern did beat them this year. Than play NW and we all know how tough the buffalo area teams r.
Slap-
Yes and no. They did do away with it because of that, but they didn’t bring it back when Burke dropped hockey, so it was obviously more (most likely money and amount of school time missed to traverse the state in the course of a week).
Here is what they SHOULD do. The section titles need to be determined by a certain date, then MW hosts a four-team tourney (w/o a consolation game, so only 3 games total) between them and ther runners up in sections 1, 2, & 10 (the eastern half of the state). Ithaca does the same with the runners up in sections 3, 5, & 6. The winners of those two tourneys get the 7th & 8th spots in the quarters. This way all of the runners up get a shot and the two individual teams have a playoff system rather than an automatic bid.
In D2, since section 2 only has 2 teams and only 7 sections have d2 schools, you have queensbury & glens falls play in similar tourneys to ithaca & mw to determine the final two spots in the d2 quarters.
Unfortunately with the size of NYS, its tough to expand the tourney the way they do in NJ (where everyone with a .500 record or better makes the state tourney). In NJ, you’re never more than a 2 hour drive from any other team.
I miss the Outbracket games. That Clarkstown team almost ran the gamut and made it to the big dance.
MW should play Ithaca every year as a play in game to reach the States, make’s so much sense. Automatic bids are foolish when you have two teams that automatically make it.
Good luck to Suff and J. Both have a good shot to go all the way!
Is it something in the water? Was it feeding time at the zoo? Check out the end of the West Genny-RFA game. A brawl breaks out during the handshake. Student body and parents alike spew vulgarity down on the players of both teams. What are we doing here???
http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/news/article/9060045754066254495/morning-announcements-
and this falls under the category ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? In the accompanying article syracuse.com poses the question of what should the schools do…anything..should they say something?
Say something? I saw bodies on the ice being pulled apart..I think the schools should say something…maybe GET OUT…see you in a 3 weeks. I guess that part of the country doesn’t take as serious as most a punch up breaking out during one of the most time honored traditions in sports. I’m just saying.
Good luck teams, well deserved, enjoy the ride!
Looking at stats of the Suffern/Saratoga game,if the two websites are right, the shots on goal in that game were 32-13 Saratoga.I guess the Saratoga goalie was off, 3 goals on 13 shots. Not sure that will happen again.
This could be a closer game than you think!
stepinac = a joke
out of B playoffs (again) even though they still have regular season games left
B playoffs will be queens and brooklyn (holy cross, st. francis, st. edmund and xaverian)
The shots were really 32-13?
IT’ll be almost impossible to win again if the shots are this lopsided. I know shots on goal is not everything, but 9 times out of 10, when you outshoot your opponent by a 3 to 1 margin (almost), you will win.
Not the least bit surprised. They tried to pull the same crap after Pelham beat them. They are out of control
Dump and Chase-
Don’t forget, Suffern was missing their top 2 defensemen and #2 scoring threat in Tiso, Mahoney, and Carudo in that game, so that could very well account for how Toga got 32 shots on net and how Suffern only was able to muster up 13.
when are the all section teams announced???
chshl state final
st.anthony-st.joseph collegiate of buffalo

st.joe beat st.francis and bishop timon/st.jude to get there
here’s st.joe’s schedule

could be a barn burner..st.ant’s is not as strong as previous years..
Coaches are voting for all section today…...just for fun, here are my picks..
Well I guess you have to start with Suffern and John Jay players…
I’ll take 4 suffern players….and 3 John Jays….that’s fair, right?
Hill, Brennan, Modica, Jaeger, Smith, Bostwick, Lanza….10 spots left….I guess you have to take the highest scoring foward and defensemen to make this legitimate, so Ramondelli and Halpin make it….I think both would have made it anyway regardless of stats…..8 spots left…..pelhams Cullen, WP’s McGee, Mamo’s Schiff, and Trey-Ferg, Scarsdale’s Nicholas, LP’s Bubolu, Rye’s Hynson…..and I think I will go with one more goalie…..could have 4 or 5 here….although I think he really needs to work on his rebound control, I will go with Stargone, because I love everything else about his game…........honorable mention to 3 players that probably would have made it if they didn’t miss so many games….schauer, gillespe, and benisceda(I know I didnt spell that right)
Suff has a more difficult route than does Jay. Toga, NW, West Genny are all very capable opponents. Jay’s route more like Qbury, Webster, WSW. I think Jay will ge to Utica, but those games vs. the Western NY teams will be challenging for Jay. I think if Suffern gets to Utica, they have a good chance to repeat.
To answer Mike’s tweet on final local rankings:
1. Suffern
2. Mamo
2. Jay
4. RCDS
5. Rye
6. Pelham
7. New Ro
8. Scarsdale
9. Greeley
10. WP
Before the Pelham faithful go crazy, Rye went 5-0 against the teams that were 6 thru 10 and 2-2 against the teams that were 1 thru 4, while Pelham went 3-0-1 against the the teams that were 7 thru 10 and 1-4 against teams 1 thru 5. Take out Pelham’s 2 Suffern games and the Pelicans went 1-2 vs. 2 thru 5.
Devils fan- others to consider include: Bunyon, Carudo, Kirincic, Leprine, Chin, Mahoney and Bellis.
Player of the Year candidates:
Westchester/Putnam
1. Cullen
2. Smith
3. Nicholas
Rockland
1. Hill
2. Gillespie
chshl,
Isn’t the state title game at 7pm on Saturday.
You know what Fanotgame….you are right, I should really have Carudo on there…..I left him off because….I couldn’t believe he only had 6 points all year…..I know he is a defensive defensemen, but I think my 67 year old mother could play for Suffern and manage more than 6 points, just merely by accident…but then I saw his 6 points were against good teams and his 2 goals were against Fairport and Clarkstown so I guess I would take off Brennan, all things being equal, I’ll give it to Carudo the senior….I’m sure Brennan will get it next year anyway…...Bunyan probably deserves it, but I am sure he will move on to great things, and I want to give it to someone who cared more about HS than Juniors…..thought it was hysterical how all the Fox Lane bloggers came on and blamed a 10-3 loss on injuries and sickness…....no, it had nothing to do with the fact Bunyan decided to play in Buffalo that day in the EMJHL instead of with Fox Lane, lol.
@ 18. Thanks for calling me a legend on another thread. But I think the term legend should be reserved for players who score the winning goal in a state championship game. Know anybody like that?
I agree with Hockeyfan, Toga will not be an easy out for Suffern. I know Suffern was shorthanded that game but Toga sort of went under the radar, if thats possible, for most of this year. The NY sportswriters gave them no respect until about mid season. This is a team that dumped Churchville-Chili when most thought they were the best team in the state (D2), they tied powerhouse St Joes of Buffalo early in the year as well. This team has made it to Utica three straight years and to the finals in 2010 and 2011. I wouldn’t sleep on them if I was Suffern and dont think Schelling will let his troops get complacent.
Not sure why everyone has West Genny making it to Utica. I know they turned it on at the end of the year but is everyone dismissing McQuaid already? They are a seasoned team
I think Mahoney is Suffern’s best all around defenseman.
I hope that the people making comments on the all section team and about the Suffern Toga games were both at the game and saw Suffern play more than once or twice. Carudo is Suffern’s best D-man and that has nothing to do with being a Senior, its insulting not to list him first and Jaeger, just look at the championship game and tell me who played better than the two Captains, no disrespect to anyone else, you can name anyone you feel deserves it but the 2 Suffern Captains have to be on the list.
Leprine and Lanza are the two other JJ players that should make it besides Bostwick and Smith.
@suffern Fan
You can make that argument.
chshl website says 7
st.joes collegiate’s says 2
i’m sticking with st.joe’s website lol
I think Mcquaid beats West Genny. WG doesn’t have the luxury of using their own Zebras in Rochester. That being said, (and I’ve thought this since Christmas), the state is wide open in D1 and D2. I could see any of six teams winning D1 and any of five teams winning D2. I’d say there are some pretty good teams sitting at home now that could’ve done some damage had they not hit a hot goalie or had a sniper fire blanks. HS playoff hockey is the best.
N-W / Ithaca game is going to be ugly. I mean N-W name the score ugly. Ithaca has zero offense, suspect D, but a capable goalie. If N-W put up 7 on Clarence, they could end up ahead by double figures by the end of the second period…..
@chshl. I’m almost positive that is at 7:00.
Ithaca is one win from Utica. I’m assuming those boys are going to leave EVERYTHING on the ice. Like I just said, hot goalie or cold sniper and who knows what can happen. I will say that NW is approaching this game the same as every other. Everyone is very good until you beat them. Clarence was busy chirping on twitter how they were going to work NW prior to mondays game. With Lindy Ruff’s kid and Grant Ledyard’s kid on the team they were pretty cocky. It didnt work out so well for them. Saturday is going to be a great day for hockey in New York State.
chshl – St.Joe’s website says 7:00 pm
N-W. The fact that a team as mediocre (and mediocre is being kind) as Ithaca is only one win from the final four shows what an absolute joke the playoff system is as currently constitued. Other teams kill themselves just to get through their section, and MW and Ithaca get an automatic ticket to the dance? What a farce.
Ithaca is going to need something along the line of divine intervention to even be competetive in this game. They have ZERO offensive ability. A shut out is practically a given. It just depends how many NW feels like scoring…
Mamaroneck beat Ithaca with their backup goalie 5-2 or something like that. One goal from Ithaca went off the crossbar. I think the refs feel belt bad for Ithaca and gave them the goal.
The Little Red’s prowess or lack there of is being blown out of proportion a bit. I agree they struggle to score goals and had a difficult second half finishing 0-7-1 after a good start to the season. They did finish with a tie against CBA and a loss to Mcquaid 1-0, two teams still playing.
