The chants started even before the opening faceoff.
John Jay filled the stands and the student section was up screaming, ‘This is our house,’ most of the game. And the No. 1 seeded Indians backed them up posting a 5-1 win over Rye in the Section 1 Division 2 championship game Sunday at Brewster Ice Arena. It was the first hockey title in the school’s history.
Pelham and Rye had won every sectional crown since 2004.
The Garnets were in control early, but John Tobin snuck in with 120 to go in the opening period got John Jay on the board first. Sean Smith made it 2-0 with a power-play goal off a pretty setup from Lucas Prestamo. Rye came right back with a power play goal of its own, and Danny Sullivan made it a 2-1 game with 11 to go in the second.
It stayed that was for the rest of the period.
The Indians came out strong in the third and went in front 3-1 with 6:46 left to play when Mark Leprine whistled a shot from between the circles in. Aidan Talgo was completely screened. Prestamo and Leprine added insurance down the stretch.

Congrats to a classy JJ program! players deserved it & coaches are great classy guys. Happy to see the smug faces wiped off those arrogant rye coaches. I’m sure they will blame the loss on how unfair it was for JJ to be playing on home ice.
A great win for JJ and the Brewster In House League!!!!
Congrats to JJ. you made it look easy.. Good luck next weekend.
The Championship game was Friday when Jay clipped Pelham. Congratsss to John Jay
Congrats to John Jay, I am not a Brewster guy, but I was rooting for them and never put them in the same class as the rest of the Brewster teams, so not sure if I agree it was a win for the Brewster house league….Anybody that put Brewster in with the rest of the teams ((this year) I am sure the Brewster league will be good again)) doesn’t know hockey, that’s like the saying Suffern is in the same class as the rest of the Rockland teams….I think its safe to say the best league is clearly the Mamo, Pelham, Scarsdale, New Ro, WP, ETB and SHIDF….take out ETB and SHIDF, insert Suff, Rye, and JJ and you have the power league…...Anyway, thrilled to see JJ over Rye…..would like to see Mamo over Suffern, not that big a rooting interest, really love the way ferguson, Schiff, etc. play…and I think next year will be more Suffern’s year
CONGRATSSSSSS TO THE BOYSSSSSS!!!!
Congratulations John Jay! Well deserved. Some down-county blowhards can now spend the off season pondering how two of their golden teams were decisively beaten by a BIA “house league” team!
Congrats JJ. BIA had the top Div 2 team this season and 2 of the top 4. Not bad.
I have said all year the JJ was a worthy and strong team. There were a lot of naysayers about their soft schedule etc. I admit I was a bit concerned about that. I figured Pehlam and Rye with their battlehardened expierience would carry the day…. I was wrong! What impressed me most about todays game is that JJ kept their poise, their aggressiveness, and their goalie play.
The loss of Benicasa left a huge hole for Rye. Size and scoring touch upfront!
JJ seemed to get better and stronger as the season went along. They are big and fast and if they continue to keep their poise and get the kind of goaltending they have had….. they will be a very tough team to beat!
Congrats to a deserving Jay team. They took care of biz in the third and won the DII war. Rye had some great shots at evening the score at 2 late in 2nd but Jay goalie stood strong. The 3rd period goals were a result of Jay’s dominant puck possession in the second half of the final period. Think they can take Qburry and get to Utica. Each of Jay, Pel and Greeley return lots. DII loaded again next year.
So how about all you arrogant bloggers out there who never believed in John Jay and thought they were going to get smacked by Pelham Friday. Go learn a thing or two about hockey before you blog. Jay beat Pelham and then goes on to win their FIRST SECTIONAL TITLE EVER against Rye. Let’s goooooooooooooooo
hilarious how people wrote jj off this year. Go jj. I love hockey.
i don’t think people wrote jay off, especially after beating greeley (and obviously after beating pelham and rye), i just think people go to extremes when they post anything online. i think a more reasoned tone of what happened this season was that jay was good, but played a weak schedule which left rye/pelhm/suff/mmk fans saying “play someone”, don’t just talk about being poor quality teams. well jay did play people, and beat them all when it mattered. thats how you earn respect. (in stark contrast to ‘pac, who talked and talked and did nothing). a few notes on the game-i just watched the 1st period. rye had a bunch of chances they failed to capitalize on, either missed passes, the puck going under a stick, or a late pass that would have lead to an open netter. jay also made some great defensive plays getting their sticks in passing lanes. also, played a very physical style looking to finish all their checks-that wins. smith is an animal with the puck. haven’t seen the 2nd and 3rd yet but it looks like once jay got rolling they kept going. they’re clearly a legit team and i wish they had played someone good in the regular season bc they could have produced a bunch of great games for everyone. another note, how in the world is that olive skinned hook nosed ref allowed to call the sectional title game. guy is constantly out of position and failed to get out of the way of the puck leading directly to the 1st jay goal. now a 5-1 win removes any excuses or even a shred of doubt about who was better but that guy is terrible and i was just waiting for him to do something that would negatively affect the game. maybe he knows the game, but he isn’t a good enough skater to be out there. also, tough for benecasa, kid was great all year but didnt seem to be on the ice much at all. rough injury, just hope he’s ready in time for lax season, maybe he changes the game but is he 3 goals by himself? someone else has to answer that.
great win by john jay. now they gotta go do work upstate. is a state title a reach? maybe, but you gotta root for them. lets go, bring it home,
@ Div 2 Fan…..who is the other team you talk about? No doubt JJ is terrific, would have been a top team in any league…..don’t know who else you are talking about….I hope its not SNS, while they have a few outstanding players, they are only an average team. 3 games out of 21 outside the Brewster league….in those 3 games they were 1-2, getting destroyed by Greely, losing to Harvey and barely getting by NYTZ. If anything by the end, LP was really coming on and was a plus for the Brewster league….don’t think the 7-4 win over SNS was an upset.
McQuaid 2 Penfield 0 end of 1st in Sec V
Congrats to JJ for showing Rye who was the better team. I watched the game and enjoyed watching the Rye coaches realize they were out class after the win. They looked as if they were going to cry. Whatsmore, the so called big guns for Rye, Hanson, etc couldn’t even step up or show up in the big game. I played vs Rye in the 1980s vs the Holmes brothers years. I went on the play division one for Boston College and the Holmes brothers ended up who knows where. He Colin, what happened to your son in this game? He got schooled! The same way my son schooled him in for your wimpy Vipers team. JJ great win and Westchester County and all who despose the Rye hockey program. Should I say anymore? Even Hen Hud played a better game vs JJ during the regular seaon. Oh well, Rye coaches, guess the smile is wiped off you face. I cannot wait to hear all your stupid reasons for the losing. YOU GOT SMOKED! Way to go JJ. You are a class organization and should be proud of your accomplishments. Now go get Suffern. Another cocky bunch! Congrats.
@Josh
I pray that you are a kid just making a fool of yourself online. Bragging about your son’s travel team … attacking a kid after a tough loss in a Sec 1 Final
Please tell us that you are only 14 and ot really somebody’s dad
where is the live feed…is it on dela???
@josh
I can’t believe you actually admitted being an ADULT after your garbage, poor taste comments. Just hope your kid that you mentioned doesn’t see your comment—he’d be embarrassed for you.
Good J fans should be embarrassed by this and other trashy comments made above.
anyone got the link to the game
Bad move josh, just uncalled for. Enjoy hockey.
Congrats to Jj and especially to their quality coaching staff
Class acts every single on of them well deserved .
Congrats to Jay who took over the game mid 3rd period. Good luck going forward.
Congrats to the Rye seniors who played their butts off today and during their hockey careers as well as in other sports. Good luck in the future
josh, i hope your a child. if your an adult thats one of the most pathetic things I’ve ever heard.
Josh,
I’m sure the entire John Jay-CR hockey community is proud to have you as its spokesperson.
You just took your son’s proudest moment of his hockey career and hijacked it for yourself to rant about some old grudges. Way to go Josh! A true role model for all parents of youth sports. Yeesh
is the game on MSG Varsity? Don’t see it
@neutral observal – agree. Ref interfered with player during Pelham game as well – goal directly after. He’s always horrible. @Josh – awful comments. Good luck upstate JJ!

mamo needs to take care better care of puck in their zone, lucky still 0-0
1-0.spoke too late
Poor taste comments! He’s not embarrased; he wrote it. And if you read the trash talking from all the Rye parents about their kids during the season and been to games. I could never be happier for JJ. Maybe you should go back and look at them. The bottom line is everyone predicted the Rye team to win. They were talking crap all week after beating BH. You must be a Rye fan. Come out and play some division 1 hockey, where I am going.
Josh, so apparently you played at BC. maybe you did. your probably just a bum who did nothing with his life and wishes his kid was better at hockey cus he probably sucks which is why your so mad all the time. you’ve probably been divorced(maybe a couple of times) cus you are such a loser. youve obviously failed at life and need to move on. you are an old man and dont have anything better to do than pick on a high school kid??? idk whats worse, u attacking a HS kid or the fact that you admitted you are a parent.
judging on your hatred towards rye, they probably kicked the shit out of you in the 80’s, and probably beat your sons team too which is why you result to travel hockey scores.
not many people along with yourself despise rye hockey because they are a classy program and have a great reputation so no ones backing you up.
now that i think about it you must have played for jay, and you are so excited that they won their first sectional title that you had to get on the blog and rip on rye for consistently being a good program.
rye’s coaches outclassed after the win?? what wasn’t classy about today??
then you go on to call suffern cocky after being the defending state champs?? you shouldve listened to your ex wife and seen a therapist because you need to get a grip on life, because life just hasn’t worked out for you. you may even be unemployed due to the bad economy which can also lead to anger. in that case, go get a job. I on behalf of everyone on the blog say that you are pathetic for calling out a HS kid while you are an adult. pick on your own son, not anyone elses. its not cal hynsons fault you have failed to live a successful life.
PS. rye beat hen hud 9-0 so that comparison doesn’t add up to me. you must be dilusional
1-0 Suffern end of 1st.
Mamaroneck looked better in the first part, Suffern in the latter.
Hill “The Younger” flat out scares me when he touches the puck.
PS.. Josh your a Sniveling Turd to call out a player on a blog.
strange, i just checked the boston college hockey rosters from the 80’s. it seems they never had a player named josh. must be a rough life, making up stories about glory you never had. better luck next time.
Yeah I am a teenager and 17. You have a problem with that Btw I’m going to Boston College on a full ride. I played against alot of the Rye players in Juniors and they cannot even shine my shoes. They will play mens league at the most. Trust me pal! I know a lot of players on JJ, you don’t, and they could not agree with me more. They wanted to kick there a.., and they did. Have a nice summer Rye fans. See you on lacrosse field. When you cried like babies when you lost then too. Goodnight Rye and think of every reason why you lost. Learn hockey too.
Josh, BC full ride, stop dreaming
You think I would give my real name? Who does?
so you played against the vipers? AA level to D1 BC, i dont think so
THF great goal 1-1
Everyone predictions were wrong about the game. Congrats JJ. In the end Rye just could not keep up with us in the 3rd period, with your stamna and intensity. It was a good game, but in the end, the better team won. I think they predicted a 5 to 4 victory. Great game to watch it was a blast. I cannot wait until school tomorrow. Let’s hope Mamo beats Suffern.I will keep me my fingers crossed. None of these kids are going pro, but let’s remember we are kids playing a HS sport. Some of you parents who take it to the next level take the fun out of the game and put so pressure on us kids. When will you learn? As I sat in the stands today the stuff I heard coming out of parents mouth about apposing players etc. was embarrasing. Is this what hockey is all about? Think about it hockey parents. You put so much pressure on us kids when it comes to sports. I think you are living out a dream you never had. I’m sorry, but it is just the way I feel. Good game to both teams. My heart goes out to Rye, because I know if sucks to lose. You had a great season! Parents (not all) keep the hurtful comments to yourself. You are putting so much pressure on us kids and not letting us enjoy. It’s not rocken science. When will it stop?
2-1 Mamk, Conley SH-Breakaway
ENOUGH …......... NEXT WEEK ON SPIKE TV WE HAVE JOSH VS. FOTG IN THE OCTAGON.
so josh, your steve santini huh?
Ur talking trash making up stories behind the saftey of ur computer screen. No one believes anything you say because you keep repeatedly lying. Rye is one of the classiest teams in the league and obviously they beat u pretty bad for u too be this butt hurt over it. You are irrelevant.
Gator…Stop dreaming. You know nothing about me. In fact, I played against the Vipers and played for a AAA Midget Major team in Long Island, If you knew anything about travel hockey, especially in Long Island, lots of non league games are played. I don’t need to explain my hockey accomplishments to somebody who probally never skated in his life. Go have another beer. And yeah buddy, my dream is still alive. Kiss my ass!
I remember Josh. He sucked.
i don’t know why your posting under the name josh, but if you are 17 and going to bc you must be steve santini. everything about vipers playing in li makes sense and you could have easily played there before playing real hockey. my advice if its really you, get off this blog dude, your gonna play D-1 theres no reason you should be sounding off about rye on here it makes you sound incredibly stupid. just go light it up at bc cuz at this point either your someone who is making everything up and terrible at hockey, or your obviously steve santini and your making yourself look like a fool instead of a filthy hockey player.
^—-Classic Line
Mcquaid wins 4-0
Josh how could you hve played vipers and another AAA midget minor team when you clearly said that you played rye in the 80’s and you also said that you are a parent and then later go on to say that your 17 it is pretty clear that you are completely making all of this up
Ur story gets worse and worse. If u played aaa midget major u wouldn’t play the vipers and u certainly wouldn’t play the minor viper team hyson played for. Kids a great player and theres no reason to talk trash about him.
@”@josh” the way i read it the first post was the father and then the son responded under the same name. its very simple, either the kid is a pathetic liar or its steve santini, who is a filthy hockey player, but also pathetic. he could have played vipers with hynson then moved up. i don’t know the history and i don’t care, but i do want to know if hits just an idiot or its actually santini. cmon josh, its obvious so either drop the schtick or come clean.
Mike tweeted 2-0 Mamk after 2nd. I think we all know that was only wishful thinking on his part
Let’s see who has more heart in this 3rd period, my bet is Mamk.
Gator the comparison does add up to HH. We lost to JJ and 4 to 3 and 3 to 1 during the regular season. Our goalie, who is consider, one of the best in the league had a bad game vs. I play for HH and we been in the sectionals for only two years. This year we finished 13 and 7, In our playoff game vs (obviously a better team) Rye continued to poor it on against us when it was clear they were going to win. That comes from the coached idiot. He played his first line every shift until the very end, which is bush league. You must be crazy if you think that shows any character in Rye’s coaching. Rye got what they deserved. JJ outplayed when it counted the most.
Remember this, we are a bunch of freshman, one day what goes around comes around. Now go home and weep you Rye fan. Now you know what it feels like. Jerk!
Outcome of the Mamo game?
7 min to go
mamo up 2 -1
great game – excellent telecast online at MSG Varsity web site
hkydad, please keep me posted on the score. I hoping Mama pulls off the upset. Thanks!
2-2 looks like OT
Classic Mamaroneck / Suffern game
soph Redgate redirects game winner in ot
what a hky game – thanks MSG Varsity!!!
Congratulations Suffern, you guys are amazing!
Good teams find a way to win, Congratulations Suffern, do us proud upstate.
To the Mamaroneck boys, keep your heads up! Seniors…. best of luck moving forward, you made us alumni very proud this year.
Rye played their entire bench, and was trying to get players who didnt play all year goals. Idk what game you were playing in but rye let off the gas big time against HH
@ Rocket Fuels Gut
Time for some pepto! Good Job SUFFERN! Graduated 10 studs and still won the Section.
Just in from both championship games, John Jay (BIA) completely dominated the game and made it look easy. I guess the civil war with the BIA in-house teams from the sound shore crew will have to cease for a while.
Mamaroneck had their game won with 55 seconds left in the game then let one slip by and Suffern scored in OT to devastate the Mamaroneck team, felt bad for their kids, they gave it their all. Both goalies played great, someone had to win.
I cannot help myself with this one, BIA has one Championship this year and Rockland has the other :-0
@Neutral observer – With all do respect, I know Steve Santani and he is very mature and would not be on a blog bragging about himself. He is a good young man who conducts himself with respect and dignity. I can assure you that Josh is not Steve Santini.
Anyone who knows Steve Santini knows these posts are not by him
Wow.. So much going on.. First, Josh, im starting to feel bad for you.. You are failing miserably at whatever you are trying to do. Just go home, you’re drunk! Or at least I hope so.
2nd, JJ.. WOW!!!!! F’n impressive!! Knocking off 2 of the top programs back to back.. Standing O!!! Again, i’m impressed!!
And finally, SUFFERN BABY!!! Great win!! What an amazing game! Clean, not full of BS.. Actually saw Hill and #8 from mamo laughing together before several face-off, but once puck was dropped, good hard clean hockey. I really liked that the ref’s let them play, and the kids didnt push things. Great win!! Great teams find a way. Good job Mamo, you played a great game!
Ok Toga, you’re NEXT!!!
@BIA
JJ proved to everyone that they are an excellent team regardless of the fact that they had an incredibly easy schedule (especially the 8 games in their “league”). I wish them good luck in representing Sec 1 in States.
But they were the only BIA team in the entire sectional tournament to beat a non-BIA team. The setup in BIA was simply terrrible and has to be changed. If you can’t afford a few bus trips, drop hockey. The JJ run proves only that JJ is the best D2 team in Sec 1 this year.
Suffern very very fortunate to get past mamaroneck.. Obviously these were far and away the 2 best teams in D1 section 1. So what else is new? Hopefully Mamaroneck stays in D1 next year (Remember they are a D2 sized school) . I’d hate to see Suffern get a cakewalk to the title.
John Jay did it the hard way, beating Rye and Pelham. They are no doubt the best D2 team in section 1. Good luck to JOhn Jay in the playoffs. Don’t be complacent with just the section championship.
@bia/@jfk-i by no means guaranteed it was him, i don’t know him beyond seeing him at the rinks and skating with him a few times, but thats obviously who “josh” was trying to represent himself as. i mean its westchester, theres not many d1 prospects, if you say your 17 and going to bc full ride for hockey, thats the only kid. i was just trying to force him to come clean bc either he is a moron and too pathetic for words or he is tarnishing a kids reputation bc its 2013, you say 17 yrs old and bc and its pretty easy to tell who your talking bout. thanks for the confirmation for santini’s sake. oh and the holmes brothers are great guys.
ps
bia/jfk-i realize that comment doesnt make a whole lot of grammatical sense. it is borderline unbelievable that in 2013 someone could be so stupid. once details are out, its obvious who you are. when i saw that s.s. was the only one going to BC in this class from around here i thought it was strange that he would care about coming on here and bashing people, since he is far and away the best player in westchester right now. my problem was i tried to pin him in a corner and forgot that this is the internet, you don’t have to admit anything. I’m glad its not steve, i don’t think BC would have been too happy and i know his father isn’t the type of guy whose gonna stand for that. good games today, i need to get off this blog.
Shamrock,
Is Mamo really a D2 sized school?? I always thought it odd that Scarsdale (which seems bigger than Mamo) dropped to D2.
Does that apply to all sports? We get crushed in basketball by Mt. Vernon and New Ro; and pay it back in baseball.
Thanks
Suffern will plAy Saratoga next Saturday at SOR
Hey Rocket Fuel, are you still strutting????
JJ will be heading up to Queensbury next Saturday
Suffern plays Saratoga at SportORama Saturday night. Suffern game should be great
several holmes brothers played d3 and hold school records at very accomplished d3 programs. One played at Harvard so used his hockey to get a pretty impressive degree. I’d say one of the d3 holmes brothers was the best pure hockey player out of westchester . . far better than you for sure. In fact he played in the Rangers organization and was going places before something happened. Not sure what.
As to Rye, bloggers are correct. Any team comprised of mostly Rye Rangers can’t be a very good team. They can’t compete with AA players from BIA.
Fact is, I saw John Jay play twice, Greeley once and RCDS (who played a close game with Rye). If you know anything about hockey its obvious JJ is a real team and Greeley and RCDS arent (except for 2-3 RCDS kids). Given closeness of those teams to Rye and Pelham, I assume JJ’s 5-1 win was easily predictable.
If JJ win was so predictable why did they lose 4-1 to rye earlier in year just asking
Hats off to the tigers . You put up one heck of a fight.
wow what a game I missed. Congrats to Suffern once again champs.Tigers were seconds away best challenge in a while. I was rooting for the tigers wanted a new champ, maybe next season . Good luck up north continue to represent section 1 with class and great skill
Good luck to you all..
because its hockey. stuff like that happens. like herb brooks said, they’ll beat us 9 times out of 10, but not tonight. Rye had its one tonight a couple months back
unreal sty and filthyy magilthyyy moves. good work. Coach Smith turned JJ into a real hockey program.
I love the real b
The rye jj game was not a 5 to 1 hockey game. Play was not dominated by jj until the last 5 mins. In fact it was pretty even most of the game. It was 2 to 1 for a while and i really thought rye was going to tie it but leprine delivered a dagger with the third goal late in the third, and rye seemed to be deflated after that and jj took over. Congrats to jj and good luck against qbury
You know so much about hockey.
You have all this knowledge.
Please share more with us. Please reveal yourself and your identity so we can all track you down for more of your incredible insights.
I have a high quality video of the Mamaroneck vs. Suffern game which I will upload tonight and make available to all on Vimeo. You will be able to upload the entire video at no cost, it should be ready for viewing in HD in the morning. I will place the link on this blog when it is ready.
Very happy for John Jay, they are a good group of players and coaches – a well deserved win.
@who is huh. You first
what were the shots on goal?
Lets stir it up here everyone. if it were to happen who you got between John Jay and Suffern?
Mamaroneck has under 1000 kids. Which in hockey (not other sports) makes them a D2 team. Maybe they should have played D2 this year… better shot at the championship. They played up and it bit them… although they were just less than a minute form beating Suffern. Heartbreaking.
I thought the Suffern / Mamaroneck game was a hard well played game, except what the hell happen to Mamaroneck on the tieing goal and in over Time they let 26 go end to end including going around there goal, can they atleast knock him off the puck…gezzz
According to NYSPHSAA classifications for this year, Mamk had 1093 enrollment and Suffern had 1142. Mamk loses alot of talent this year, but dropping to D2 isn’t the answer.
http://www.nysphsaa.org/classification/2013.14ClassNumbersWeb.pdf
MAMO- has according to beds 1092 students grades 9-11. That makes them Division 1 this year ? Next year same number but cutoff changes. They will be Division 2 next year. They played where they should have this year
Shamrock, please stop crying, who cares d-1 or d-2, you act like Mamaroneck would have walked all over JJ which I dought they would have. Just stay in d-1 so you have an excuse for when you lose, were alittle school playing with the big D-1 school blah blah blah, also Suffern is a young team and you still lost….whats your excuse there!!
The last two post were not from Pacfan (Robert Buckley), someone is highjacking my blog name and making comments that I would not make – I understand there are people who are upset they lost, but please don’t drag others down. I will never comment negative about any player or team. Mike D, could you check the IP addresses of the person falsly using my screen name and post where they are from.
Sorry pacfan didn’t known there was someone with that name. I will change to Sec1sport or something
Congrats to jjcr. They have gone through the best to get to the sec 1 d2 title. They are a team with depth. They will need their depth and a hot goaltender. They will need both to keep advancing.
The brewster house league sounds pretty good. They have a couple of kids on the US teams and have a section title. No doubt the house league teams will have no advantage when it comes to earning a 2nd sec 1 title. I believe greeley is a team who can be strong next year. But if they are to be called the house league, they should wear the title with pride. Rome was not built in a day and neither was the bia house league. One should not be surprised if the biz teams can put at least one powerful team in the mix every year and maybe two or three soon. Rye and pelham could save some time and money by playing at the house league during the regular season instead of going upstate. But seriously, it is great they go upstate to face other power teams. The house league teams should try to do the same.
I think JJ will be going to states, I think they will win next Saturday Based on how good they did against all these very good section 1 teams , there a very good team
Suffern vs. Mamaroneck game can be viewed at http://vimeo.com/60425316 – Pacfan
You can also upload the video at no cost – enjoy.
Pelham handled Mamaroneck, so would have John Jay
Yeah. Keep telling yourself that. Suffern was lucky to get past mamk. JJ wouldn’t have a shot vs mamk or suffern.
Bill,
Rye started playing its entire bench with 10 minutes left in the 2nd period. Anyone who was at Hommocks and saw the game on Wednesday knows that.
Hey I wouldn’t doubt JJ if I were you, look what they did to all the other non-believers… just saying, they proved me wrong also
I watched many games this and I can tell you that on any night John Jay could beat Suffern or Mamaroneck. John Jay is equally as strong as both those teams, please stop the silliness. Rye spanked Mamaroneck 4-2 and JJ spanked Rye 5-1. I think Rye, Mamaroneck, Suffern and John Jay are all really good teams who would spilt many games if they all played each other 10 times. John Jay is clearly in the same league as the other teams mentioned. In addition JJ took out another of the elite teams from down below in Pelham. John Jay is in the discussion when you talk about the best team in Section 1.
Agree. Bottom line is all these teams have enough good skaters and goalies that if hot, could result in mixed results between them in a series. As for Jay it only took me seeing them play vs Rye during the season to convince me they were a top team (followed by their wins upstate against at least 1 very good team in Ogdensburgh).
As they say, elections have consequences and here I’d say winning Section 1 titles have consequences so I’d put a bit of space between Suffern and the others.
@hkydad
Please get over yourself and the ignorance you have for JJ, who was forced to play 13 league games, not the 8 you state. Their non league games were against Fox Lane (a charity game they play every year) Scarsdale, Monroe, Rye, Horace Greeley, Thousand Island, and Ogdensburg upstate. They then beat Pearl River (who many predicted would upset JJ), Pelham, and Rye.
Regular season, easy schedule, whatever you want to state, the beat the 2 heavy weights, out shooting Rye 23 -10 over the last 2 periods, including 13-4 in the 3rd.
Pelham and Rye are great programs but JJ was the best team this year in D2
Yes Jay takes it this year, and thats not a surprise looking at their team the last few years, but PLEASE do not even go there with shots on goal against Rye. If you mention that then its fair to mention Pelham out shot them 45-16 (and the 2nd and 3rd periods the game was played in John Jays end) so don`t mention shots
45-21 ( 2-1 margin not 3-1 margin) lets be accurate if we can.
low percentage shots are a dime a dozen. JJ had odd man rushes and capitaliozed on higher percentage shots. JJ goalie played great but JJ spent 3rd period in box and played more defensive after running up the score. Still one of the best hockey games I’ve seen all year , seemed more like finals not semi.
I think Jay was the best division 2 team and thats two tough teams to beat back to back. Looking at it objectively though Jay never set up in Pelhams zone and according to the web site that tracks stats
SHOTS
Pelham 13 17 15 45
John Jay 8 5 8 21
If we are talking shots its clear. Jay won but lets not act like they blew them out
