No. 1 Suffern (18-3) vs. No. 3 Mamaroneck (16-7)
4:30 p.m.
Brewster Ice Arena
Previous meetings: Mamaroneck jumped in front early and hung on for a 4-3 win at Hommocks on January 11, and Suffern got the rematch 3-2 on February 1 at Sport-O-Rama when Nick Modica clamped down and survived on a flurry in the final minutes.
Suffern
Coach: Rob Schelling
Forwards line by line: Robert Clark (5G, 19A), John Costa (8G, 11A), Kevin Hill (30G, 20A); Justin Tiso (13G, 12A), Nick Jaeger (14G, 14A), Joe Verboys (9G, 6A); Dan Demarco, CJ Greco, Michael Redgate.
Defensemen: Anthony Carudo and Tom Mahoney; Tom Brennan (6G, 15A) and Patrick Callinan; Troy Daniels.
Goalie: Nick Modica (1.24 GAA, 94.6 percent).
Mamaroneck
Coach: Mike Chiapparelli
Forwards line by line: Teddy Bellis (21G, 13A), Peter Conley (22G, 18A), Jason Bienstock; Trey Herlitz-Ferguson (30G, 14A), Robert Morris (10G, 25A), Will Arbo; Spencer Kupferberg, John Wojociechowski, Hunter Boyle.
Defensemen: Brian Schiff (7G, 25A) and Josh Kriss; Matt Fryer and Cooper Lavan; Brendan Barger and Ryan LeBlanc.
Goalie: Thomas Brill (2.9 GAA, 87.8 percent).
Keys to a Suffern win
1. Keep everyone healthy and maintain the playoff momentum.
2. Make sure Trey Herlitz-Ferguson has a nagging shadow.
3. Thomas Brill played on the big stage in lacrosse and won’t get rattled unless he’s under constant pressure.
4. Get some quality minutes early for the third line.
5. Mamaroneck will gamble in catch-up mode, so getting a lead will result in more chances.
Keys to a Mamaroneck win
1. Continue to shoot even if Nick Modica is playing like a Ninja.
2. Do not let Suffern go up by more than one goal.
3. Stay at home on defense, especially if Brian Schiff isn’t taking a regular shift.
4. Break out with numbers to force the Mounties to take the penalty.
5. Start physical and stay physical.
Prediction: Both teams are rolling at the right time of the season, which makes the intangibles a deciding factor. I’m not sure any team grinds better than Suffern, although I have seen the Mounties get flustered when the work is not rewarded with timely goals. Mamaroneck has a lot of seniors who are looking to leave on top, and that counts for something as long as they do not force the issue. I can see this coming down to a bounce. Suffern 4, Mamaroneck 2.

You are right. This game will come down to a great save or great shot.
Will the puck go off the post and in? Or off the post and out?
Mamaroneck has to bury the good chances they get. Not shoot it into Modica. If schiff isn’t healthy enough to play half the game…. Mamk loses by about 4. The drop off in d after schiff is drastic. They couldn’t contain LP very well, suffern will expose that d.
You got to hand it to West Genny they beat two of the better teams in the state to get through their section. They are always a factor. But with that said I think the winner of tomorrows Suffern-Mamo game has a good a chance as anyone in the state to win it all.
Well done on the analysis Mike. I think 4-2 is a fair prediction but if Suffern doesn’t get out to a quick start and play their “A” game, this could easily go to OT or be an outright Mamaroneck win. I’ll say Suffern wins 4-3.
Can anyone advise what the seating capacity is for BIA?
Suffern will win by 4
JJ will win by 1
OSM
Off the top of my head, I believe there’s seating for 1,110 with the extra bleachers.
Ohhhh yeahhhhhh I’m feeling good. Mamaroneck wins tomorrow. Take it to the bank yo!!!!
Harlem shake video by suffern..please say it hasn’t been released yet!
Suffern find a way 6-4 Rye does also 4-2
It’s the ” been there done that” factor for Suffern and Rye..just like the old days!
Rye Country Day won the Fairchester crown today. Two team fom the City of Rye to play for or win titles! Shows what a great Hockey town Rye is! Rye Country day is not a Boarding Prep school and has all Local Players (many from Rye itself)
Rye Country Day should just Join Section one and Play for a Section and State Title. I don’t exactly know the rules to do this, but I think they have to move all sports to do it…so if that’s the case….. Just do it!
Last Mamaroneck vs Suffern game, one goal was scored on a screened shot, if the Mam’k D-man would of cleared the lane for Brill it would of been an easy save and the other goal the Mam’k D-man tried to ride his player out wide and missed a hip check, he skated right around very easily and scored. 2 missteps cost them the game. This game is going to be close, going with the usual Suffern / Mamaroneck score 3-2 either way.
Suffern peeps question of the day: Is there any younger Hill and Redgates we have to worry about looking at the future? ...and is the 8th grader “Daniels” on the Suffern roster the younger brother of Justin and Drew?
Suffern by 4
5 hole Suffern will not win by 4 PLEASE! If they win at all it will be close
Was in jungle not impressed on by 3 players suffern will dominate they are deeper and have more experience in the big games
.
Only by 3 players. Rememeber Suffern never loses in tne finals , they wont this year either. We all want a close game but that will not happen. The jj rye game will be the close one. Good luck to all 4 I want tigers and jj
It’s being tweeted all around suffern..please keep it off YouTube for a few weeks!
Ta-Da- No, and yes.
The red gates have 3 younger sisters who just may be names in womens lax!( John is a top notch lax player himself)
What do you mean they dont lose in the finals? what about 2008? Mamaroneck beat them in sporto rama with 15 secounds left in the game.
5hole is ignorant about hockey before his son played. Mamaroneck beat suffern in 2008 championship & won it in 2009 over white plains that beat suffern in the semis.
When was the last time PAC beat anyone for the championship? Oh yeahhhhh. Never!
Ill agree suffern 4 Mamk 2
@baby blue – thanks
If kreiss doesn’t play for Mamk than Mamk can be in trouble suffern will exploit the defense
Who’s kreiss?
Mamk has to tighten up defensively. This is not your 2-1 suffern team anymore. They’re capable of scoring 6 or 7 if u don’t focus on D first. This includes most importantly the centers coming back and helping like a 3rd defenseman.
Kreiss is one of the better Mamk defenseman. In one of the other threads a fan of Mamk stated that he might not play
Mamk won first game 4-3 suffern won 2nd game 3-2
First of all no need to call me ignorant. I am just making a prediction regarding the big game. It seems the last 3 seasons Suffern has been the team to beat, they always seem to win. I am pulling for the Tigers, I just think Suffern will win by 4 goals, that’s all.
5hole
How can u base a 4 goal victory for suffern? Suffern has been rolling I agree but Mamk is big and physical. The 2 games this season were 1 goal victories. I’ll agree with u on a 1-2 goal game but 4 is really out there. If suffern wins by 4 it’ll be w waste of a big hyped game
This is the first time in 4 years that suffern has competition in the championship. Last 3 years were cakewalks. This will be far from a cakewalk.
I agree iceman that this will be far from a cakewalk.
THIS IS GOING TO BE FUN!!! suffern wins 3-2 in a great game!! possibly even in overtime..
I am going to keep an eye out for that one Mamo fan who is a loud annoying parent who knows nothing about hockey and sit far away from him!! Please wear your grey fleece so I can spot you easily!
best of luck to everybody today!!
Can’t be any worse than the new Ro fans Thursday postman
Ned Bigby’s game day advice…(or…an excuse to set the season record for most parenthetic remarks in a single post)
Arrive early…(if for no other reason than to check out the restaurant staff.)
Behave yourselves…don’t damage any property or Section 1 won’t be invited back there either. (wrestling meet?...yeah right…we can have combat troops on the ground in 6 different countries but West Point can’t host a hockey game and a wrestling meet?...ummm…okay)
Stop complaining about the entry fee…
(you can’t brag about having a heated driveway and then whine about paying 8 or 16 bucks to see the final…if you can afford the gas to drive there, you can afford the entry fee)
Don’t wear a grey fleece and talk stupid crap.
(actually Mamo fans and parents should have a “grey-out”...everyone wear a grey fleece.)
When on a long car ride with your youngest child, don’t ask them to Shazam the lyrics to Thrift Shop by Macklemore even though you think it sounds like a cool fun song. (play the license plate game or twenty questions or something)
Good luck to all.
Postman, is that the guy who screamed “both ways” after the ref called the first penalty of the game? The ref has to start somewhere.
Postman, is that the guy who screamed “both ways” after the ref called the first penalty of the game? The ref has to start somewhere. At least wait for 2 or 3 to be called against your team before you start complaining.
Ned. I’m able to afford my heated driveway by sneaking in the back door at the hommocks for 20 years. I haven’t paid admission in forever.
Then the coaches from suffern get all upset when I drop a deuce in the bathrooms across from their locker rooms.
I am getting there at 12pm. Nice nd early since the first game isn’t starting til 1:20
Biff, maybe he was implying his sexual orientation to the “cute” ref.
Good Luck to all teams, play hard and to the winners, continued success in the State Tournament.
yea kreiss is out for mamk today. gonna have to roll three d
3d.. Ouch!
Yea that’s what I heard. Since kreiss is out Suffern wins. Now it’ll be a 2-3 goal game
I was told if ur coming to both games go to the tables after the 2nd period of the 1st game pay and get restamped so it’s 8 bucks a game
I thought Schiff was their top Dman? and seem to recall reading somewhere here that he’s still been playing even though he’s been injured, so maybe Kriss will too? I don’t expect Mamo to go down without a fight today, so it should be a good game.
Regardless of who wins today, Section 1 will be well-represented. And I’m sure if Mamo wins today they will give Saratoga a good fight on Saturday, there is no way they’d lose 6-0 again because they are not the same team that played them in Dec.
What’s Chappening blogdom? I’ve been waiting for this moment since Chaptember, for a Chapionchap game that we all know was coming. Well well well, look what we have this year. Suffern having to cross the Chappan Zee bridge to face Chaptain Chaptastic, where they will face Mamaronecks chapostles. Not sure why they would show up at all, it will be worse than getting a chapentdectomy. The last time Mamaroneck made a chappearance vs. Suffern in the chapionship… Mamaroneck broke their hearts with 16 seconds left, suffern fans would rather have a chap-smear test than go through that again.
Sure all the players are different now, so you can’t compare chapples to oranges, but history will repeat itself again. It will be another CHAPter in Mamk history as Chapions once again.
Mike, how dare you pick Suffern over Mamaroneck. You will owe mamk a great chapology, as mamk chapplies pressure in the suffern zone. After Mamk wins you will beg for their chapproval and chappeal to their forgiving nature. It would chappear that you underestimate mamaronecks chaptitude, and don’t understand that they are beyond chapproach. By the end of the game, Suffern fans will show their chapproval of mamks chappearance as they skate with the crown. Mike will make a public chapology for picking Suffern, as he fills out a chapplication to ride on the mamk fan bus to Utica. The chapplause will be deafening, as Mamaroneck chapproaches another state chapionship game, and Mike shows his chappreciation for witnessing the best high school hockey program in history. Suffern bloggers will be chappaled at the final score of 5-2. So stunned they will need a CHAPerone to get them home.
No doubt a chaptive audience at BIA will lay witness to a suffern chaptastrophy, as mamk chaptures another win with a chapital W, and a chappy ending for MHS. Sufferns Chaphazard efforts will be for naught. Suffern hearts will be chalpitating all game as mamk’s little chaplings echapulates goal after goal. Bring your cameras to take a chnapshot of this, chapanese will be the official language in section 1 after tonight.
Kriss never got hurt and will be at full strength today.
if neither kreiss nor schiff is at full strength may be real trouble for mamk in defensive zone. still expect mamk win. bigger stronger and faster.
Beware of elderly man with long trench coat wearing a psu cap. He will give his one sided opinion from the parking to the last whistle. Tell u how new ro should be playing today and how to get credit for 4 pts in a 2goal game
JJ 5 Rye 3, Mamo 3 Suffern 2 both titles stay on this side of bridge. @Tigerezz by the way 5 hole is a lakeland guy not a Pac guy, got to give him credit though he loves high school hockey
Wait, I thought MSGVarsity.com was live streaming both games. I can’t find the link or the game. What the hell? Anyone have a link for me? Thanks.

devils988 you are the bomb
At the eleventh hour…...the Mamaroneck pièce de résistance…...Chapanese!
The Suffern blog force silence is deafening.
Even Grammarati is bewildered.
How sweet it is!
WOW, Turning Chapanese giving Mike the business for picking Suffern. Will Suffern Cross the Chappan Zee or the Bear Mt. Bridge? Could make all the difference. Not sure how he comes up with more Chapanese vocabulary. Suffern bloggers are stunned… this could turn the tide in Mamk’s favor no doubt.
Suffern Coaches gotta be Chappalled at the last second post by Turning Chapanese. LOL
Rumour is that the suffern coaches are not letting the suffern players know that Turning Chapanese did come back, and did make a statement… waiting all year…. until the perfect moment to throw his art in the face of the mounties. This is truly a stunning development.
hey rocket no problem.can rye turn this around??can’t wait for suff-mam game.gonna be a war
just like that i miss the goal haha.too much food!!
@devils988
Teams looks extremely evenly matched.
ya should be down to wire
Suffern won 3-2
