very curious as to why rcds is in a typically “Section 1” blog
It’s not a section 1 blog. It is a high school hockey blog for the journal news’ coverage area (Rockland/Westchester/Putnam). Rye Country Day School is in Rye, and therefore in the coverage area, so Mike covers them.
harping on cliff’s comment
if iona wins its playoff series against chaminade, they are top 10
they beat chaminade by a goal last night…games 2 (and 3 if need be) this weekend…not to mention 2 wins over st.anthony…their record is also deceiving, booking games (losses) against suffern and notre dame of west haven…and non-league contests (yes, could’ve performed better…) against rcds, xavier of ct, greenwich hs, greeley (a W, recorded as a scrimmage) and scarsdale
is fordham still playing friday night against scarsdale? they play game 2 of their playoff series the next night in mt vernon against st.anthony (fordham lost to them 5-0 last night)
by the way, quinnipiac is #1 in the nation
What will the brackets look like? Will Rye and Pelham be on the same side?
BTW…before we start complaining about brackets and revamping the whole seeding ptocess and points system…take a look at the boys basketball seedings released this morning..
Mount Vernon, undefeated in the section and with a national schedule is seeded no. 3 in for the section playoffs!
al,
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahaha
Al- that is crazy. Seems like every sport has issues with the seeding formula. Assuming Pelham beats SHI tomorrow and the bonus points don’t change (that is, no oppponent moves up to or falls below either of the .750 or .500 levels by Thursday afternoon), then Rye and Pelham would be on opposite sides of the DII bracket unless tonite’s match ends in a tie. Jay locked as a 1. Scarsdale locked as a 5. With a Garnet win, Rye a 2, Greeley a 3 and Pelham a 4. In the event of a tie, Rye a 2, Pelham a 3 and Greeley a 4. A Pelican victory means Pelham a 2, Greeley a 3 and Rye a 4.
My guess is that BIA is rooting for a tie tonite. Then his Jay team has a great shot at the finals.
I hear you but just because hoops or any other Sec 1 seeding is garbage. Does not mean that we can’t comment on the lunacy of Sec 1 Hky.
Who runs this ridiculous committee??? If you read through the “rules” for seeding…you can only conclude that the BIA House League wrote them!!! Mediocrity is the order of the day. Play a crappy schedule…pile up the wins against inept competition and get a great seed – Beat Brewster, Pawling & Carmel for 6 wins @ 4 pts apiece. Lose in OT to Rye (with Benicassa) and get ZERO. Beat Suffern in OT and get the same points as an epic victory over Brewster.
It looks like WP is going to be the SEVEN seed in D1…simply pathetic system
Bring back power leagues where teams compete on an equal footing and YOU CAN’T BE SEEDED HIGHER THAN ANYONE IN A HIGHER LEAGUE…IT WORKED…this is a joke
These are not the rules of the hockey seeding committee.
These are the Section One Rules established for all sports.
We only follow the rules.
Scarsdale is certainly looking for a tie. I’m sure they’d much rather play Greeley in the quarters
RIIIIIGHT – you have no power to improve this insane league/playoff system
You and your committee are simply innocent, powerless victims who take all the blame???
I don’t feel bad for Mt Vernon, and I’m sure they don’t care either.
Rather, the number 2 seed, North Rockland, is being asked to travel down the tougher road to the finals.
Why would he make that up? This is the same seeding formula that was instituted on all sports in section 1 when they re-structured the leagues geographically. There is no input or influence by anyone that goes into it. It is straight math. Not defending the system as it certainly has many flaws, but it is strictly formula-based.
@Al Bundy and @John Orlando
First, pick a username and stick to it. How about HockeyDad? Second, let’s not attack individuals who are doing what they can to grow the game. The rules are laid out by the section, and seeds are impacted by league alignments. John Orlando is not in any position to change the formula or the leagues. If you want to vent, call the superintendent of schools there in White Plains and make a plea for sensible realignment. And seriously, Dubset isn’t a top four seed because the Tigers failed to close out a couple of big games. Don’t blame the formula or the leagues. Win games.
Understood – I never said he made anything up…in a sense my point is stop calling yourselves a seeding committee – maybe the “seeding” committee should be called what it is: simply the “scheduling” committee
My sarcastic point is that Mr Orlando has considerable influence in Sec 1 and I’m sure some of his committee does as well – if they are going to be “attached” to this ongoing farce…they should try to fix it!!!
BTW – “Section 1” is not HAL the computer – it is made up of PEOPLE – who are these people and how do we address this ridiculous situation
The people are those at southern westchester BOCES in Elmsford. If you wish to contact them, go to swboces.org and grab their contact info.
There is a seeding committee in every sport. It consists of the chairperson of that sport and the asst chairperson, as well as one AD from each conference and I believe one coach from each conference. The seeding is done strictly by the formula, and the committee exists to wade through every team’s submission of their schedule, apply bonus points, figure out indecies, determine the seeding, and notify the schools. They are also there to hear protests to a teams seed, but you cannot protest with “we’re better than them, we should be seeded higher.” You can only say “you messed up the math, please double-check.”
In the case of hockey, the seeding committee has a lot of work done for them by a certain person who keeps track of this all season long whileother sports wait until the meeting to sort it out. And while that certain person’s laptop isn’t named HAL, maybe I should start calling it that. And there’s no need for the protests in hockey because my math isn’t off.
Unfortunately, BOCES won’t budge on the formula across all sports and they won’t make an exception for hockey, so it looks like we’re stuck between the proverbial rock & hard place.
Sorry Mike – did not mean to be personal – it is just that Mr. Orlando is powerful guy in HS sports for decades and I really think he has the pull to get something done. He can’t be happy with so many lopsided games in legue play.
Also did not mean to imply that WP deserves anything higher than 4th seed – point was that weighting of schedule in this formula does not seem to work (ie getting extra credit for getting slaughtered by a team that you do not belong in the same league with)
Are you guys saying that seeding mathematics are the exact same for ALL Sec 1 sports?
At the end of the day, I just want to see a league structure where at least 16 of 20 games are competitive…scores of 10 – 2 benefit no one
Thanks Cliff…much more clear now!
does your website count bonus points (which, of course, could come and go as the season progresses – similiar to BCS strength of sched component)
thanks again for all your great info & knowledge you provide to us all!
Yep. Bonus points are updated daily as I spend part of my morning commute scouring the state for updated records of everyone section 1 plays during the season. So the playoff index is always current for every team.
Thanks again
...trust you are on a Metro-North train in the morning and not driving…LOL
NJ Transit, but close enough.
hkydad, you are foolish to think the JO has any influence over the BOCES people, on the contrary BOCES keeps JO distant and has diminished his role as section 1 coordinator.
Instead of using his knowledge and contacts the power that be (yes it is left singular for a reason) chooses to make her own decisions regardless of Johns input
You should be thanking him for his efforts to insure section 1 always has a say a state meetings, but you will never understand that until he leaves this position and some AD who does not give a crap about hockey fills the position because of need. Better yet throw your name in the hat to take over and let’s see what a great job you do. Maybe you can go to Utica and sit in with Sadler and Stuart and show them how much you don’t know.
@scores
thanks for the useful info in the 1st half of your post
not sure about the rant in the second half your post??? I’m missing the connection between getting the Sec 1 league/seeding mess straightened out and the politics of the state playoffs. I just want something better than the BIA “House League” and JJ beating Brewster 10-2.
I don’t have any idea who Sadler & Stuart are…and I could care less. I want a better regular season for everyone playing hky in Sec 1, with competitive leagues…so you make a ridiculous suggestion that I should be the next Sec 1 Hky Coordinator. Bizzare to say the least
@hkydad
then you really have no clue as the leagues, ncluding palyoff system, are set up by the AD’s at their meeting in April, they decide the # of league games and how the leagues are set up. The power leagues are not coming back because the AD’s believe that the $ is more important than competition
Read your own idiotic rant above, and no John does not have that power:
