We’ve got kind of a quiet day before the big clashes.
There are some matchups on today’s schedule that you don’t normally see. I always like it when a CHSHL team steps in to fill a Section 1 schedule gap. Those cross-overs give us a chance to compare and contrast. It sounds like it’s warm back home, but I don’t think fog will be an issue at Murray’s tonight with the 60 mph wind gusts in the forecast.
I’m waiting for a couple more Player of the Week nominations. I’ll post that, hopefully, later on tonight.
We’re gearing up for Rye vs. Pelham and Mamaroneck vs. Suffern. If you want to start the pregame chatter, go ahead. Let’s get some predictions, too.
Jan. 30
Stepinac vs. North Rockland, 4:15 p.m. at Sport-O-Rama
Somers/North Salem vs. Nyack/Tappan Zee, 5:45 p.m. at Palisades
Yorktown vs. Mount Pleasant, 9:10 p.m. at Murray’s
RCDS vs. Kingswood-Oxford, 6 p.m. at RCDS
Jan. 29

iona rescheduled their notre dame-west haven game
next wednesday, 2/6, at the milford pavilion – could be ugly, or a good tune-up, wake-up call for playoffs
Current ‘MyHockey’ Rankings are interesting. Should be a very competitive sectionals tournament in Division 2. There is no clear favorite.
http://myhockeyrankings.com/rank.php?y=2012&a=1&v=721
Ill take ND/WH and lay you 5…. Greenwich beat Iona 6-1 and ND beat G’wich 8-1… If it was a tournament they would be running the clock in the 3rd period…..
Is it just me… or has the last 5 years been a “wake up call”, a “tune up”, a “tightening up”, a “rebuilding”, a “getting their feet under them”, a “gelling process” and every other cliche’ you can make up for a marginal team?
Iona has used every cliche’ under the sun to explain why they are not as good as they should be. I guess it ain’t the coaching.
iona has a few hockey players and a standout goalie, thats it
no one ever said they were great
the fact that they beat st.anthony’s twice and blew a W against rcds shocks even me
the spread on the nd/wh game is probably more like 8
nothing against the kids on the team, but an attitude prevails around the parents over the last few years, that somehow they have signed up with an elite prep school program (for which they pay a large fee of several thousand dollars as if it were a travel program) – everyone around the program was wildly enthusiastic back in Spring 2011 with the new coach and virtually year-round nature of the “new” IP hockey program…then that guy was one and done – at the end of the day, CHSAA runs a lousy, travel-intensive hky league(s)
Suffern 7 Mamaroneck 3
North Rockland beat Stepinac 9-2.
I don’t feel good about the Mamaroneck Suffern game. My gut is telling me to worry. My head says we should win, nice wins over Ithaca and WP.
My gut won’t listen. I don’t like this. My gut is usually right.
How many Div 1 and Div @ schools have qualified for playoffs?
Rocket fuel, this is your gut, mammo will lose!!!
Shut up gut!!!! Stop it!!!! We should have no problem winning, we won last time and have won 6 in a row… no injuries, no illnesses. We should be good to go! Why won’t you get out of my gut? Why are you throwing doubt in to my face?
If I eat a boloney sandwich will you shut up?
BTW, The Pearl River goalie should be strongly considered for one of the player of the week. If they pulled that off, it would have been a bigger upset than Buster Douglas over Tyson.
Rumor has it, Vegas would not take bets on the Suffern vs Pearl River game, Suffern was THAT much of a favorite. Even with a huge point spread.
I agree with Rocket Fuels brain….Pearl River Goalie should be one of the players of the week Suffern I herd had 51 shots on goal and 24 miss shots on goal….the Puck was buzzing by this 10th grade Goalie all night – Great job!!
RCDS 5 Kingswood-Oxford 2.
For comparison Dearfield beat KO 4-0.
Suffern will bury Mamaroneck
last game Suffern’s goalie gave up 4 goals on 16 shots(bad game)
Tigers are lucky if they get one in 30 this game . . . .
Gone Fishing- just fyi-although you’re correct and it was a bad game, it was actually 3 goals on 20 shots because the game winner/4th goal was an empty netter
Yeah, OK. First off Modica did not have a bad game vs. Mamaroneck. Just because he let in 3 on 20 shots. The goals he let in were very good shots. A goalie can let in 3 goals on 10 shots and all 3 not be his fault.
That being said, Mamaroneck is the better team. Goaltending is close, but everywhere else Mamaroneck is better than Suffern except coaching.
Can Schelling take less talent and get them to beat the better talented team… possible.
Say what you want about the shots on net vs. Pearl river etc. to have that game at 3-2 in the third period tells you all you need to know about Sufferns offense. This is where the biggest difference lies. Mamaronecks forwards are much better than sufferns… hands down. At least they are much better in the offensive zone. So I’ll say it’s another close game and Mamaroneck wins 4-2.
Chello- I guess we
Sorry, score comparisons do not matter. So you are trying to say RCDS is comparable to Deerfield? I don`t think you are close. RCDS has not even dominated the local high school teams in the last 15 years. They are pretty good this year, they beat Rye even though Rye was missing key players. They would be in the middle group of section 1 but not comparable to Deerfield
Chello- I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one because all of your comments are just your opinions and there is really nothing to back them up. You can choose to believe that Mamaroneck is the better team, and apparently think that by denying Modica had a bad game makes your team look stronger. The fact of the matter is that overall the whole Suffern team did not play very well that game, and the score was still only 4-3 with an empty netter being the game winner.
And the PR game should have nothing to do with this. I don’t know how you can say that a 3-2 score in the 3rd period proves that Mamaroneck’s forwards are better than Suffern’s when the final score was 6-2. Then there’s the fact that Modica did not start in goal, and if he had it is more than likely the game never would’ve been that close.
Suffern is typically a more defensive oriented team, so it’s more about getting the W than scoring lots of goals. But evenso, Suffern still has more goals scored than Mamaroneck… in fewer games
Lol. Yeah ok. Sufferns a better team. Lol.
And by the way. When teams don’t play well. It’s almost always because the other team made th look bad. Mamk made suffern look bad. Knocked them off their #1 state ranking once again and exposed them as a good team at best.
So when mamk exposes suffern on Friday we will hear about how they’ll be ready when it counts in the playoffs. Either that it throw your goalie under the bus again saying he had yet another bad game. I’m guessing he played bad against wp too? Or was WP a better team.
At this point in the season, it is simply ridiculous to predict that “Suffern will bury Mamo”
Hopefully you are not beyond 14 years of age to come up with that one!!! Suffern is a great team but they are not the team that won the State last season. Mamo is a big, tough, tested team – I really doubt either team will get buried.
Should be a great preview of the Sec final.
Hey off the post- you’re right about one thing, mamo made suffern look bad but its not because they’re the better team. It’s amazing how when WP beats Suffern, WP is the better team, then Mamo beats Suffern and they’re the better team. What about Mamo’s losses, does that mean that they lost 6 games to better teams? If so, how good are they really. Everyone said how bad Suffern was going to be this year because of all the players they lost but so far they’ve still only lost 2 games….in spite of the injuries.Maybe they will lose to mamo on friday, who knows, but what matters is where they are at the end of playoffs.
Suffern was fortunate to get 2 goals vs. MHS.
ONe was a softie that their goalie would like to have back, and one was the brain cramp by the dman behind the net with 16 secs. left.
At SH1. It is amazing how whenever Suffern loses it is because they were sick, their goalie played bad, or because it was at ebersole, or the whole team just played bad….. no specifics… just “they played bad” kinda lame don’t ya think?. Mamk seemed to do just fine at Ebersole.
No Chello its not lame at all.. when you are talking about a team that won a state championship and has been ranked in the top 5 or so in the state for the last several years.. saying a team played poorly, had injuries or illness is not a a stretch at all when they lose to a team that is 9-5 or 10-6. We are not talking about a team that goes into a season hoping to make the playoffs or end season with a .500 record. Yes Mamo is on a roll and playing great, but when you go into a game against a team that has 5 losses in 13 games or so, losing to them had to be due to something, or did the mamo team leave all this talent at home those nights? Where was all of this talent in those losses? I find it interesting that people are saying that Mamo is more talented, yet they have lost to some teams that a talented team should not. This is going to be a fun night tomorrow.. im going with 4-2 suffern!!
I have written on here many many times,, Talent means nothing!! WIN THE GAME!!! PERIOD!!!
Exactly WIN THE GAME PERIOD> AND SO FAR MAMARONECK HAS WON THAT GAME. Suffern Has won nothing vs. MHS.
if you would like to talk in past tense Chello, I will ask Cliff to step up and give us the scores of the last 6 or so Suffern Mamo games, the number of sections championships, the number of state champiionships.. looking to the past was not a very smart move Chello.. not too bright
Chello- I seem to recall the score was 4-3, you have excuses for 2 goals what about the 3rd. For the record, there are always REASONS for losses, in spite of the way people like to spin it and say Suffern is just making excuses or throwing the goalie under the bus. Having injured or sick players can be just stating facts, but even with the loss of some key players Suffern still has managed to win games against good teams. i’m not going to bother trying to explain the losses because anything i say will not matter anyway. And its interesting how you failed to answer the question….what about mamo’s 6 losses that their fans seem to love to avoid discussing?
just another thought.. when a team like suffern losses to a team with 5-6 losses, you have to stop and think about why? it doesn’t make sense!! (Biff) something must have been off. Now when another team with 6 losses losses to a team with 6 losses, it is lame to start discussing reasons. You have already lost 6, nothing new about losing for you.
Of course, Mamo is the underdog vs. Suffern at Sporto
Suffern’s more equal & fair test will come next week when they play Don Bosco, a school where recruiting is also part of the program…LOL
I know how suffern lost to a team with 6 losses. Their scouting dept did a bad job of recruiting this year.
Good one “Answers”!!! you are a comic genious!!! really original stuff there.. oh boy
Postman- don’t they always go back to the old “recruiting” garbage when they have nothing better to say
As we suspected, you suffern folks can’t even spell genius…
“Answers” comment is a complete exageration – everyone knows that Suffern HS does not have a Scouting Department…recruiting is handled by asst. coaches!
YEP….
LOL or they just proof read and find a spelling error, and write about recruiting again.
One reason why mamk has 6 losses is, we don’t have Schelling.
Its funny how Suffern is 13-2 with all there home grown young players, so don’t cry next year when these kids are a year older and your really getting spanked!!!
@Sect1
You know what is even funnier? The fact that you HAVE to mention that THIS years team is homegrown. Like Suffern is doing something above and beyond by not having outsiders on the team.
I have to mention this for all the cry babies and whinners…..but its to bad all these kids are home grown, really must erk you…like a punch to the gut that this young Home grown Suffern team is 13-2 and yes, next year will be another kick ass smack down in section 1 as all these kid became another year older and another year Bigger and Another Year Better!! ROTFLMAO!!!!
Ok Sect 1, maybe you should doublecheck your facts before you go shooting off your mouth- first of all, Suffern is 14-2 and WHY would you ASSume that any team, including Suffern should be upset with that record? The only other team in Section 1 that currently has fewer losses is JJ at 14-1-1 (& they’re in Div 2). So it seems to me that you’re the only cry baby & whiner right now as you are the one who seemed “erked” at the home grown Suffern team- who is not losing a lot of seniors and will also be a year older next year.
Let’s see how the rest of this season plays out before all the bold predictions for next year start because this year’s preseason predictions about the fall of Suffern have not yet come to pass.
Chello. Did you actually say the goalies are close?
Grammarati, where are you!!!
@goalies- although I did not address that earlier, I must admit that was a delusional comment. Apparently Chello is unaware that Mamaroneck has allowed almost 3 times as many goals as Suffern….so far
I’ll take Brill over Suffern tender anytime. The same way I took Glaser over Natoli, and we all know how that played out.
Rocket Fuel, I just lost all respect for you. Please tell me you were kidding. I normally separate you from all of the ignorant human beings on this blog, but not at your last comment. Luke Glaser and Tommy Natoli were both great goalies. Nick Modica is a high caliber AAA goalie who has represented the ATLANTIC DISTRICT his whole life. One of the best goalies for his age group around. Tom Brill is god awful. Just awful. Tom Brill will be the reason Suffern takes it tomorrow night. I’ll give you one more chance though since I think most of your comments are valid. Just please say you were kidding. I hope I just didn’t understand your humor.
Sec1- while I definitely agree with your comments regarding Modica, perhaps your comments regarding Brill are a bit harsh. In all fairness, Brill did have a good game against Suffern last time. Granted Suffern’s SOG that night were probably about half of what they were against WP (who has a great goalie), but he did manage to keep Suffern at just 3 goals
As mentioned yesterday, I pray that you are not older than 15!!!
To Mike D. calling a HS kid “god awful, just awful” on this blog is totally out of line…that comment s/b removed – Coaches & Refs are PAID grownups and fair game but that kind blatant abuse of a HS kid is totally unacceptable
