Somers/North Salem clinched the Conference 1A title last night without having to leave the comforts of home. The losses by Lakeland/Panas and Mahopac left the Sabers alone on top without the possibility of being caught.
As for today, I’m going to be dealing with airports and flight delays, so I’m not going to be able to monitor weather and cancellations. If we are good to go, Nancy Haggerty will be covering New Rochelle and Scarsdale. The other game should be pretty good, too, RyeTown/ Harrison and Clarkstown, which should finally be closer to full strength.
I will put up the power rankings once I get to New Orleans and have a minute.
Send along updates if you’re out watching, please.

Clarkstown/RTH is cancelled. Clarkstown has an early dismissal and all after school activities are off.
what did iona do
The game has been postponed.
Carmel beats Mahopac twice in two weeks and no mention in the daily wrap up ? I know they aren’t a power program, but its always a big rivalry game. Only the 2nd and 3rd time ever the Rams have beaten Pac. New coach at Carmel must be doing something right. All the Carnel alumni are very proud. Go Rams!!
Carmel pretty much came out of nowhere to beat PAC twice. PAC was supposed to be a dark horse contender. And nothing this year for PAC. Big wins for Carmel. Good job.
In the bigger scheme of things, this is just two teams who are not good and you want someone to write something in the paper about them. Every school has a major rivalry with their neighboring school, it is only important to those who attend these schools. No one really cares about two teams with losing records playing each other.
Pac is embarrassing themselves but the good news is, you dont see anything on this site from their obnoxious parents anymore. They got what was coming to them. Losing to Carmel twice is about as pathetic as it comes.
Carmel Alum
Congrats on the win. But yeah don’t expect much press here until the team starts putting consistent wins on the board—just the way it is.
Hopefully you and the rest of the Carmel alums , present parents, etc will be throwing all the effort you can on building the program! Good luck.
Good win…congrats on beating your rival
but there can only be so much coverage of the BIA house league in the Journal News
Good thing you guys got rid of the horrible former coach…I guess he was just too strict for your tastes???
Wasn’t looking for a feature article. Understand how the world works. Just thought it might have merited a mention in Mike’s daily recap of the previous nights games.
@carmel alum
Agree
All teasing aside, what happened to Mahopac?
Did Carmel improve that much? Are there travel team issues?
Just because a team is not going to win the state championship (or even section), does not mean it can not and should not get mentioned in the blog or a recap!!
I’m going to agree with supporter on this one. Most teams are not going to play for the championship. Most teams are not going to play Ithaca, West Genesee, Massena etc. for big upstate games. Most teams stay home, money is a major issue. Districts can’t support sending teams all over the state to play games.
So yes, I agree, these types of games should get recognized. Carmel and Pac are big rivals in every sport. And it is surprising that Carmel was able to win both games. Pearl River vs. Nyack/TZ also is a rivalry game as TZ and Pearl River are rivals in most sports. So when a team wins these games, it is exciting to the players, coaches and student body. So it is nice to get recognition. Do we really need another article on Mamaroneck? Pelham? Suffern? (although Suffern does not seem to seek out attention). Did I just complain about Mamaroneck coverage?
My point being, it is pretty obnoxious to state “who cares? when your school consistantly wins 15 games per year for a minimum of 5 years…. then we will care if you win a game…. until then, shut your pie hole, and keep watching the Big 4 teams. We are all that matter”.
Kinda makes you hope that John Jay DOES win the section… just to break the stranglehold that the 4 teams have on section 1.
Rocket Fuel – With the exception of your last point, I could not agree more with your post. These high school games are all “big games” to the kids playing and their parents and friends in the stands watching them compete. These kids have worked their whole lives to get to this point of playing for their respective schools. Their parents have logged thousands of miles and countless hours getting them to practices and games. This is big stuff and why not recognize them for their efforts. They’ve earned it.
Must be on to something here if Rocket Fuel and OSM agree !!!
Pac old coach is a good guy not to mention a husband and father, we can do without the negative comments. He coached that team through their best season. Their new coach is also a quality guy, Pac is having a rough time right now BUT come playoff time it will be different for this team hate to play them in the first round as they will pull off an upset. Congrats to Carmel as well.
Mark Leprine for JJ had one of the best break away goals i’ve seen all year, split two defenders deaked them both and got through and completely faked the Lakeland goalie out. Pretty cool to see after watching a lop-sided game between Ossining and Fox Lane.
Hi mark
Carmel Alum – On this point we agree but don’t expect RF and I to be holding hands and singing kumbaya Friday night at SOR.
Congrats to S/NS, no one saw them winning 1A. After a so-so season last year, winning thier division is impressive. A well coached team with balanced scoring from freshman – senior. They have had 3 different freshman play on the top line this season which is very impressive. They might be a tough out come sectionals and might be a good team for the next couple years.
@TheHSInsider
Yes congrats to S/NS, they are having a great season. However they are losing 5 key seniors, including their goalie, so I don’t know how great they will be next year. They could be good based on the fact they do have some good young talent. They are still a school with a modified program so maybe they get some more young talent in the future. My point is its to hard to tell on a year to year bases.
Ps. Their first line Freshman now will be a big time contributor in the future, good strong player.
@ Old School Mountie
I’ll hold hands only if it is a tie. I think there is a lot of pressure on Suffern in this one. Mamk, despite winning by one goal last game… controlled this game and outplayed suffern. If it happens again and Mamaroneck wins at SOR…. Suffern will have serious doubts about getting past Mamaroneck in the playoffs.
Or I could be completely off base. Mamaroneck smokes them at SOR. And Suffern wins at BIA. Who the heLL knows. All I know is, it is great to see Mamaroneck and Suffern games being competitive again. The last few years of blowouts have been a real bummer… for me.
The interesting thing will be this. Will they both make the championship game? It has been what? 5 years since they have seen each other in the finals?
Congrats S/NS Ice Hockey! You make the alumni proud! Go get’em in sectionals
Congrats S/NS Still remember when the Somers lax star, Jo Jo Marasco was scoring goals for you guys! Good luck!

Looks like Pelham has Rye Thursday, and Rome Free Academy over the weekend. Tough draw
power rankings?
@Rye Pelham Pelham has Rye Thursday Rome Free Academy Friday and Massena Saturday, tough stretch
tough stretch indeed, which Pelham scheduled and obviously wants. That schedule must be exciting and fun for them to play. Putting it out there every game against the best teams. So far they are managing it quite well. They just got back their big scorer but for a team that has only 3 seniors and not a lot of big names theyve done real well so far
Suffern is set to play White Plains in the Semi Finals and then Mamo in the finals. I can’t wait. It’s going to be an intense playoffs. Anybody can win the whole thing this year!! Well not really…Realistically Suffern or Mamo but it seems like anybody can win!!!!
I know iona clinched..but they need to wake up..they tied a weak st marys team last night..playoff style game saturday against chaminade needs to kick their a$$ into gear
GOOD FOR PELHAM!!!! makes them proud of their great program and confident in it! Win or lose they come out tougher and better for it! Are you listening wannabe’s Scardale, Greeley, JJ???
Obsessive
Of course agree with you on
Obsessive
Sorry didn’t finish above. Of course agree with you on the great advantage(win or lose) to Pelham for having such a difficult schedule.
But you (me , others) have repeatedly made this point before and I don’t think anything more needs to be piled on these teams (which to a lesser extent inc Rye) The kids have heard this before (some unnecessarily have agreed with this on this blog ), but most importantly can’t do anything about who the coaches schedule. I’m sure one way or another the coaches are aware of this situation. As I’ve said, shame on the coaches IF they have not tried or tried hard enough. In Ryes case for example, did they try and get a game with Suffern? If not-
BAD on Freisen. If they did and Suff wanted to play Pelham not once but TWICE and Monroe Woodbury—but not Rye, then IMO bad on Suff. Very frustrating but not much one can do, etc etc etc.slacrosse
And now his little brother is scoring goals for S/NS
Yup
Mark Leprine’s goal was awesome, I second the comment above by Puck. Wish some of these teams had Hudl film like football, where highlights could be posted to the blog. That was highlight – worthy.
Unfortuntely- According to Cliff’s webste, Pel goes up to Utica region this weekend to play a tough RFA team and a solid, but not spectacular New Hartford team. They go all the way to Sec 10 next weekend to play a ranked Massena team and the same struggling Salmon team they played (and easily disposed of) recently at SOR. Rye, RFA and then Massena is a pretty good warm up for playoffs. Rye not too shabby also with strong locals Pel, New Ro, Scars.
Sport blogs are interesting and they all usually have the same theme whether they are high school, college or pro teams blogs. They start out with high hopes and the thought of what might be for the team you support. As the season progresses, if your team is doing well they are talked about and if your team is not playing well or they fall off the radar, then needless to say, your team is usually not discussed or mocked by some. In being fair, it is obvious that Mahopac and a few other teams that were being discussed earlier in the season on the blogs are diminishing and what is left is the possibility of picking things up in the playoffs. When your team is not doing well it is always best to be humble and sit on the sidelines. To answer the question of; “Is Carmel a good team”, they are better than their record indicates, they have solid goaltending and a team that has lost many close game to good teams. They played hard in defeating Mahopac and they were victorious, that is good for their players and their program.
I look forward to the playoffs with the hopes of our team playing well, only time will tell
obsessive.
Scarsdale heard the same deal last year regarding their schedule. However, they play mamaroneck, Pelham, Rye, White Plains. New Rochelle twice,Clarkstown, John Jay, and West Haven. Not too bad . Stop making the upstate teams the mark of a tough schedule. There are a lot of excellent teams here. Scarsdale did just fine last year preparing their team for the playoff run, and came within a goal of winning the section with a young team which included 2 freshman and a soph and a junior as starters. The coach did not overwhelm them, but had them ready. The are also very young this year. I agree next year they should diversify their schedule by adding even more tough teams, but don’t lump them in a group that doesnt play anybody tough.
#1 It is fine for the pac bloggers to go silent but some of us are just curious about what went wrong with Mahopac…blogger craziness aside. They were looing like a pretty decent team earlier and now they can’t beat Carmel. There has to be some kind of reason or, more likely, reasons???
#1 Carmel has not played a game – not a single game – outside BIA and they have only 3 wins – two over Pac???
Please – Scarsdale has 6 non league games that are soft. N. rockland Fox Lane Fieldstone Pearl River all unneccessary games for a team trying to go with a better schedule. Ryes schedule is so much better not even close. and Yes some of the upstate teams, especially those in the Buffalo and Rochester region are the mark of a hard schedule because those teams are the ones who make it to Utica every year
@Scarsdale.
I am not saying they have a killer schedule, but it is not weak. And if they are trying to get better so they are prepared for the playoffs, it seems the coach did a good job with it last year and looks like he has some same plans this year. Scarsdale has not been at full strength all year. Burns is probably one of their top 3 players, and their top D and has been gone all year. Schell is their second best scorer and has been out a month. I know other teams have had injuries too. I just think that I wouldn’t want to see Scarsdale in a few weeks when they are full strength. I am sure they can spoil a lot of peoples plans.
