I see a couple of games where the favorites need to be very careful.
John Jay did not play great last night against Rye and fell from the ranks of the undefeated, so it will be interesting to see how the Indians come back against Lakeland/Panas. You know the Rebels will be charged up. Mahopac has to want revenge after losing a big rivalry game to Carmel last week. So will the Indians be a little too emotional?
I’m off after five straight days in the rink, so if you’re out watching, please leave us an update.

Disagree. I felt J played very well.
Both the Rye and Jay teams had to deal with the disjointed nature of the game. Less than half the game was played at even strength. All goals before the empty netters occurred on or right after the Rye pp (Jay’s lone goal a shortie off a pick off of a cross ice pass). The zebras called it very tight (technically correct, just tight). Lots of high stick, xcheck, head contact calls (against both teams- including both teams killing long 5 on 3s) after body checks. Players eventually adjusted, but the physical play was absent from both sides.
Was at the game mainly because it was both an important game for Rye and just to see if JJ was the real deal (it was also close by) I came away impressed with JJ they are the real deal! They have talent and size especially on D. They deserve to upgrade their schedule and gain Statewide repect.
This will only attract more players to their program and keep them from being “poached” or going prep. They are a large and monied school district and thus there is no reason to keep them under the Radar!
@ I.I. Anybody can beat anybody in the section now….. TRUE and it speaks well for Section 1 hockey…but you have to win when it counts and the only way to do that is play a tough schedule against quality opponants to be battle tested for playoff and state competition.
Upstate Hockey for all the great strides that section 1 has made is still better hockey….simply because it’s more of their culture. It’s colder…their ponds and rivers freeze all winter and their is nothing like Pond Hockey to deveop skills. Ice time is cheaper and more plevent and the farther north you go the more this is so.
Many upstae programs do not have top notch programs for Soccer, Basketball and Football so their top atheletes go with Hockey where as down here there are many differnt choices and ice Hockey still is on the fringes with many schools around here Not so up north!
Greeley will be in for tough game against Yorktown again.Probably another high scoring affair.Clearly,Pelham and Rye top two in d2 with Scarsdale having a chance.
JJ also has a good chance, as good a chance as Greely and Scarsdale…Rye and pelham as favs though as you say
Also, excuse me I haven’t been in the area, but how did Mahopac lose to Carmel in hockey???Congrats to the Rams.
obsessive-yeah ur right.hopefully, the draw will put the best teams in the finals. The playoffs will be good.Scarsdale being good is good for section 1.
The MW/Harvey game for tonight is cancelled.
Local top 10:
1. Suffern- back where they should be
2. Mamo- see RPI discussion below
3. Rye- see RPI discussion below
4. Pelham- see RPI discussion below
5. RCDS- Wildcats rounding into a difficult opponent
6. Jay- they were the last undefeated team in the state until last nite. Really should be in Sportswriters rankings
7. Scarsdale- a dangerous team no one wants to see early in the playoffs
8. WP- resourseful team that finds a way
9. New Ro- the DI version of Scarsdale
10. Ctwn- will be dangerous with Gillespie and the other jr player back
10. Greeley- Needs to regain its mojo for the playoffs
10. Iona- has a goalie that keeps them in games
I put together a RPI index for the big 4. 2 points for a big win or tie. 1 point for a good loss. Minus 1 point for a bad loss or tie. Good win/tie is against an opponent in my top 7 local list or sportwriter’s rankings (refer to them as “stud” teams). A good loss is a close game against a stud team. A bad loss/tie is a loss or tie to any team that is not a stud team and any loss by 4 or more goals to a stud team. Wins against non stud teams or non blowout losses to stud teams don’t count for anything. So, for eg, wins over WP, New Ro or Ithaca don’t count. Pel’s close loss to Suff gets them a point and their 5 goal loss to the Mounties counts as a point against. Mamo gets single points for close losses to Rye and Pel.
Suff has 5 big wins, 1 good loss and 1 bad loss for 10 points in 7 games (1.43 RPI)
Mamo has 2 big wins, 5 good losses and 2 bad losses for 7 points in 9 games (.77 RPI)
Rye has 3 big wins, 1 good loss and 3 bad losses/ties for 4 points in 7 games (.57 RPI)
Pelham has 3 big wins, 1 good loss and 5 bad losses/ties for 2 points in 9 games (.22 RPI)
I am sure the Pelham faithfull will take issue with the formula. But, just playing top teams doesn’t get you points. With a super tough schedule, you have more chances for big wins, ties or close losses to stud teams. But, you also expose yourself to losing points on the index if you can ‘t keep it close against stud teams.
This all for fun, b/c all that matters is the play in mid Feb.
I love fanotgame but the above post is why there shouldn’t be a week off between championship games and the Super Bowl. Way too much time on our hands
Just kidding dude you are great!
FOTG. U r insane.
Mamk v suffern at suffern Friday. That’s all that matters. To me.
Hmmm, interesting offering fanot, but riddle me this: How can Mamo have 5 good losses and 2 bad losses, when they have lost 6 games total on the season? Me thinks and RPI recalc may be in order….
Oops. 4 good losses (Clarence, Rye, Pel, RFA) and 2 bad losses (Shen and Toga). 6 points in 8 games or .75 RPI.
Rye will not beat Pelham
Whether it is next week or in playoffs
End of story . . .
That also goes for JJ,
Greeley is done &
Scarsdale is a 2. Player team
Already disposed of
I would put Pelham over Rye at this point. Rye needs to get their top scorer back and soon! He’s not only their top scorer and player but a big leadership factor on that team. Without him they are not quite the same.
Given that I still see them in the finals with tough semi games against Scarsdale and either JJ or Greeley (prob JJ). With both these great teams at full strength it’s a toss-up with a very slight edge to the Pelicans
Are bonus points added to the standings as of right now or are they added after the season?
Lp will keep it close , must stay out of box or firepower will be too much for lp goalie, having said that this could be his defining moment, good luck lp and Brandon, wish I could be there
I give you credit. You go to great lengths to try to prove Rye is better than Pelham. Maybe Rye wins Thursday and you can be right. If so you will only be right for a short time as Rye has not beaten Pelham in quite some time. I m sure you know the last time Rye beat Pelham the date time cirumstances etc. Pelham has four losses this year. Two of them to Suffern who Rye does not play. 1 loss to Williamsville East 11-3-1 ranked 3rd in division 2 in New York State in a very tough section for hockey. Pelhams other loss is to Niagara Wheatfield who is a division 1 team also from Buffalo ranked 2nd in the state. Your “RPI” system is flawed. This is not college football. Goals against or differential are meaningless. A loss isa loss. For the record, in the two losses to the Buffalo teams didn`t Pelham play the ninth grader in goal because the starter got injured? No excuses but goal differential is menaingless. Last season Pelham scrapped Rye 5-0 at home. Does that mean that Pelham was a lot better? Pelham has ties to new Rochelle and Queensbury, Didnt Rye lose to Queensbury? The games are won and lost on the ice, and in the playoffs when it counts. I look at what these teams have done the last four years and that speaks for itself. Pelham is section champ what three of the last four years? thats all that matters until they crown this years champ
The last time Rye beat Pelham was a regular season game on 2/11/09. since that loss Pelham is 4-0-1 against Rye. maybe Rye finally wins one Thursday, although it would not be a playoff win
Question-
The standings listed on section1hockey.com include bonus points, and the records of everyone’s opponents are updated daily so the standings can be current and accurate. So for example, if Fordham wins their next game to get them to .500, NewRo will automatically have their playoff index go up due to the bonus point they would now receive for having played them. If they lose the game after that and dip back below .500, NewRo’s index will go back down, even if they don’t have a game during that time period.
So by your new system does Pelhams win over White Plains look better than Ryes win over White Plains because Pelham did not need overtime to win that one?
Update lp jj
The way I look at specifically Rye and Pelhams losses and ties good and bad is Rye has losses to Combo team and to Rye County. Are those teams on Sufferns level? right. Common opponent tie/loss for Pelham -Rye? Yes Queensbury beat Rye, Pelham tied Queensbury. Pelhams tie to new Rochelle? probably equal to Ryes tie with Greeley. Edge clear to Pelham
The difference between Pel ’s performance vs Qburry and that of Rye ’s vs that opponent is an inch- literally. Both Sec One teams travelled to Qburry, outplayed and outshot the Spartans only to find themselves down 2-1 with 1 min left in the game. Both Sec one teams pulled their goalie. Pelham got the equalizer while the Rye sharpshooter hit the crossbar. Both Pel and Rye should have handled Qburry. Rye and Pel almost identical wins vs. common opponents Mamo, WP, ETB, McQuaid, GF. Pel knocks off Scars while Rye does the same to Jay (a little better than Scars). Pel’s come from behind tie to new Ro about same as Rye ’s come from behind tie of Greeley. Neither should have occurred. On paper, Thursday nite should be a real good one. Let’s hope it is. Then Suff vs. Mamo the next nite.
Fox Lane 7 Ossining 2 F
JJ 0 LP 0 4min left 1st
Possible upset in the making
Great week of hockey coming up
FOTG …...... you are very knowledgeable but i have to agree with all the comments made by @fotg. you seem to go the extra mile to slight pelham when you can. as i believe you are a former rye varsity player parent, your loyalty to their program is ongoing and appreciated by rye. your rpi was entertaining but there are many intangibles that went astray until pointed out to you. thursdays game will be great and the team that works the hardest and wants it more will prevail. i’m surprised you didnt award rye bonus points for not having home rink. time for you to get a life. sequals to war and peace are not needed.
Jj lp score
5 hole, if you looked at Mike’s twitter on the right, you would have seen the score. It’s 2-0 JJ
My phone does not access it
Thanks for update
4-0 J end 2
Don’t worry 5 hole, I got you. It’s 4-0 JJ now, end of 2nd
inches? Well were you at both games? Pelham v Q and Rye V Q? Pelham was up 1-0 and Q came back with two goals in the second period. Pelham was ahead for most of the game. Pelham did score with the goalie pulled to tie. Rye was down 2-0 going into the third. A loss is a loss my friend, inches? handgrenades and horseshoes. Oh and no mention of the 5-2 loss to Clarkstown? did you discount that?
Thanks BizNasty
1 – 1 greeley yorktown end of 1
5-0 final J over LP
5-1 greeley final
Carmel beats Pac AGAIN!!! i love it! great weekend of hockey. I guess this means SNS wraps up 1A for sure now with LP losing as well. congrats to them, they managed to do it under the radar somehow.
fordham is the 4 seed, iona the 3
battle of chaminade/st.anthony for the 1 and 2 seeds (and most likely the title)
Can carmel make playoffs?
They clinched last night by beating PAC.
what was the iona score
Carmel needs one more win if they are going to win 25% of their games, they schedule is pretty moderate coming in I’m sure they will be fine for the playoffs
They beat pac twice which guarantees them 25% of their games against conference 1A are wins meaning they are in. They don’t need to win 25% overall as long as they do it within their league.
Clarkstown/RTH is cancelled for tonight. Clarkstown is getting out early due to the snow/ice so all after school activities are cancelled.
Whatever happened to all those Pac supporters? losing to Carmel 2x got your tongues??? how embarrassing!!!! shame shame shame….
Mark Leprine for JJ had one of the best break away goals i’ve seen all year, split two defenders deaked them both and got through and completely faked the Lakeland goalie out. Pretty cool to see after watching a lop-sided game between Ossining and Fox Lane.
