What’s in the frozen water?
There was a string of upsets yesterday starting with Fox Lane taking down Greeley and Nyack/Tappan Zee beating Clarkstown and Hen Hud knocking off Mahopac.
How crazy are the playoffs going to get?
Suffern picked up a big win and will play Bethlehem (7-6-2) this afternoon before getting back on the bus. It’s a trap game. The Mounties have taken some losses already when the intensity dropped, so we’ll see if a lesson was learned. Mamaroneck is entertaining Ithaca, and will be looking to keep the momentum going. The Tigers are beginning to finish at a higher rate, and that makes them very dangerous.
I’m crossing state lines this evening to watch Rye and John Jay go head-to-head at SoNo Icehouse in South Norwalk, Conn. You can follow me @LoHudHockey for updates.
Leave a score if you’re out watching.

Good Luck to Mamaroneck and Suffern vs. two upstate teams.
Play like you had a fake girfriend die today and walk away with the win.
*girlfriend – even I can have a faux pas.
Should handle Ithaca. Suffern and Pelham beat them last weekend and Pelham was playing all young kids due to injury. They have a superb goalie but have trouble scoring. Mamaroneck 4 Ithaca 1. Suffern 7 Beth 1. John Jay 3 Rye 0
Anything on 1A? Did SNS clinch??
The bigs
Hang the banner. Somers/North Salem did indeed clinch the Conference I-A title.
I could be wrong but I believe Rye gets Benincasa back tonight so I’m seeing Rye coming out on top in a 4-1 win. He might only be one player but he makes a big difference. Suffern should handle Bethlehem without many problems. I’ll say 6-2 Suffern. Mamaroneck and Ithaca will be a pretty good game. My prediction is Mamaroneck will come out on top 3-2
@Grammarati,
Before making jokes, let’s keep in mind that someones fictional girlfriend died. #keepperspective
The Bigs (and Mike)-
No, they have a little work to do before clinching. They are 8-1-2 in their league games, and with a 13-game league schedule, they could still wind up at 8-3-2 if they lose out. Both Pac & LP have 4 losses in the league, meaning they could each potentially wind up 9-4 if they win out.
The bigs
I reluctantly admit that Cliff is right, ties drop your winning percentage.
Score on the suffern game
It’s 0-0 end of 1. You guys know there’s a live Twitter feed on the right side of the blog’s homepage, right? We’re getting updates from the gracious Travis W. Jackson, and I’m retweeting them.
Why is the Rye game in Ct? Still problems getting ice?
John Jay is scared of RYE and will choke as usual in all of their sports..
RYE 4 JJ 2
Notice
Yes-Playland is done for the season.
2-1 suffern
Meister,
May not be the case. Even with him will be a tough game. Two good teams—should be a good one and pretty close.
3-1 suffern
Is that a final on the Suffern game?
Close enough. They should get a W over Carmel and not have to worry about the “what-if”.. *knock on wood
Yes suffern won hill score all three goals
anyone know when or if Suffern is getting back Tiso?
Tiso should be back in 1-3 weeks.
Mamo-Ithaca update?
4-1 rye wins last 2 on empty net. Very good game And close. 29-25. SOG rye
VERY big win for Rye! Close game and Rye played well against a VERY worthy opponant! JJ is for real and they have some good players especially on D. They need to upgrade their schedule they are very ready!
Mam’k game?
Gotta be some blame on JJ’s coach – he knew what he had coming back – did he fight to get out of the BIA wasteland or just see a bunch of easy wins??? BRING BACK THE POWER LEAGUES!!!
Undefeated means nothing when your sched is incredibly weak…
Mamo 5 ithaca 2
THF had four and Schiff had one.
First goalie for Ithaca was great!
Mamo controlled the whole game and outshot them at least 2 -1.
Got a little chippy…
Nice win.
A lot of people got ice time for mamo
Mamk 5 Ithaca 2. Final. Mamaroneck beats Ithaca with their backup goalie. Playing his first start of season. Not sure if brill is sick.
Trey HF with four sweet goals.
After what I saw today JJ is right there with Suffern, Pelham, Rye, Mam’k and WP…could beat any of them on any given day. If they played better compitition on a regular basis they would only be better! I don’t care waht game you play even tiddlewinks you play againt and with better players you get better…simple as that!
No doubt about it – JJ has a team this year…
When (and if) Pel ever gets back to full strength, they will be the favorite in D2
Mamo – Suffern are too close to call in D1
...but as we all know there are a number of teams capable of upsets, especially those with great goalies and a passable third line
February is going to be alot of fun!!!
Very interesting night. My take on it, JJ was exposed tonight. They come undefeated and face there first real test, and did not get it done. So after almost three quarters of the season gone, its still exactly as mr smarthockey didnt say. Its Suffern and Mamaroneck in D1 and Rye Pelham JJ in D2. The creme rises to the top.
and to compare JJ to Suffern is laughable.
told you JJ always chokes when it counts. this is in all sports at JJ just look at the football and lax team.
I would not say choke, Choking is blowing it when you are superior. They are not superior. Nice team, lots of wins, but completely unchallenged. They may win the whole thing who knows, but I think a team needs to be battle tested and challenged in order to win it all
John Jay is legit, they will be there in the end. They can beat any team on any night and like tonight they can be beat. No team is unbeatable in Section 1.
They are capeable…and can match up with anybody in Sec 1 and show up! However I believe their lack of regular tough compition will see them go out in the semi’s…. a shame really!
Benecasa still out for Rye?
losses to section 1 teams
Suffern has lost to Mamaroneck and White Plains
Mamaroneck has lost to Rye and Pelham
White Plains has lost to Pelham Mamaroneck and Rye
Div 2
Rye has lost to Clarkstown
Pelham lost to Suffern twice
Jay lost to Rye
Its interesting that the top 3 teams in each division have very few losses to section 1 teams. So they are pretty dominant. Although Jay Rye and White Plains play less of a tough schedule than the other three
Jay/Rye game was a close one. Garnet goalie was very good. Tuten may not have made it on the scoresheet, but he played a strong, hard game at 125 lbs soaking wet. Good sign for Rye winning w/o their top fwd. in fact, Garnets are 5-1 w/o Benny. Hope he is back for Pel on Thurs.
Rye and WP play tougher schedules than does Jay.
slightly better true.
JJ had their chance to shine tonight and failed. There are no moral victories, unless your whole goal is to just be able to compete with the Big 4. You gotta beat them. How many times have we heard “Oh we played right with Suffern for 2 periods” or “A bounce here or there that goes our way and we would have beat Suffern”. Yet somehow it never happens. Mamaroneck, Suffern, Pelham and Rye and WP have all had what we call significant wins this year. WINS, not ties, not lost by one goal etc.
No doubt JJ has a very soft schedule, it hurts them too. And since there is a good chance they will play Pelham or Rye in the semi’s… I don’t see them getting to the championship game.
They can give all the best teams a good game… but they gotta WIN. That is the name of the game. Not just be able to compete.
Glad to hear my MHS Tigers win vs. Ithaca. I tell ya, these wins against upstate teams are becoming old hat. I would love to know what section 1’s record is against upstate teams this year. I am fairly sure it is a winning record.
Mamaroneck vs Ithaca was not even as close as the score. First Ithaca goal clanged off the crossbar. I think the refs felt bad for Ithaca and gave it to them.
Everyone keeps talking about JJ easy schedule. At least they played Rye.
Look at Somers/NSalem schedule…. THEY TRULY PLAY NOBODY. They leave BIA only twice all season and that was to play Harvey and Nyack/TZ. And look at the standings, if the season ended today… they would be rewarded with the #2 seed. Now THAT is a joke.
The big 4 are 15-7-1 vs. upstate. Suff is 6-0; Pel 4-2-1; Rye 2-1 and Mamo 3-4.
First congrats to Rye who played very well against a tough J team. Rye’ s goalie played great and needed to against many close in shots by J. Aside from him and among many others. the play of forwards Tuten (21) and Sullivan (22) stood out to me. I think Rye’s consistent use of a 3rd line ( not used vs RCDS) helped give a needed break to the 1st 2 lines. Bennicassa , Rye’s top scorer was out again and hopefully will be back soon.
John Jay. Agree with Obessive. Anyone watching the game would objectively conclude Jay is a very good team and deserves to be considered “right there” with the top teams he mentioned. This was a very dose 2-1 game not counting the last 2 empty net Rye goals. Jay really tested Rye’ goalie with maybe tougher saves then had to be made by the J goalie. #24 for Jay is very tough and a real presense on the ice. Enough with J’s schedule. They beat Scdale, Greeley and lost a 2-1 game to Rye. They’re in the mix with the top teams in Section 1.
BIA ” Slightly better” Please! Suffern and Pelham play tough schedules because they believe in their programs. Rye and Mam’K play tough schedules because they also believe in their programs!
JJ’s schedule is not even close to any of them period! Do they believe in their program or not? Time to step up and take some lumps if you want the respect you’re very good players and team deserves!
Slacrosse Agree with most everthing you say…but JJ does have to step up thier schedule a whole lot to gain the respect they deserve so it is an issue that needs to be hammered I feel bad for the kids!...their coach is doing them no favors not stepping up with the material he has…I don’t get it!
I looked at JJ schedule they have to play 13 league games, 7 non league games. The 7 non league games were against Monroe Woodbury, Scarsdale, Greeley, Rye, Fox Lane (part of a charity game they play each year), and 2 games upstate vs Ogdensburg, Thousand Island, Or Norwood/Norfolk. Only having 7 free games to play looks like they tried to schedule good opponents.
JJ Will get respect if they win the section 1, D2 championship…. regardless of who they play in the regular season. If the team is young, they need to schedule tougher teams next year. No more cupcakes.
Rocket Fuel
Your right. Winning vs top teams (particular in the playoffs) is want counts. Jay is going upstate and playing what I understand is at least one very tough team in Ogdensburgh (Thousand Islands as well)—a WIN there would be good for them in the “making it happen” category. Great to see J going upstate.
My main point above is that J at least has the ability to beat top teams and they need to get it done—that is of course EXCEPT against Rye.
Obsessive
Yeah can’t blame the J kids for their schedule. Heck I’d certainly crave Pelham’s schedule for my Rye team. As I said J’s going upstate to face tough teams is good. Next season I’ m sure they’ll try and upgrade the schedule again
Real shame for the Rye seniors who can’t play any home games at Playland with a full fan base backing them. Hopefully as was the case playing Mamo at Hommocks, they’ll have a big “home” crowd for their “home game” at Hommocks vs Pelham. Great that other teams inc Sono have helped them out with ice time.
Can’t help thinking JJ is another one year wonder – they are happy to be in the BIA House League because next year…that is where they will actually belong – no intention of upgrading sched
Rye had a great crowd at Ebersole where they beat WP with a 90 seconds left in OT
First it was Rye to give “downstate hockey” a presence in the state (Helped that the Rangers practiced at Playland) then The Great coach Orlando and the mighty Suffern Mounties to make us proud…then Mam’k and Pelham now maybe WP and MAYBE JJ, Scarsdale and Greeley can now join the party. After all they are all big schools with the money and access to rinks…... HERE’S To sec 1 HOCKEY!!!
JJ is this year’s ETB
If you really believe that, you haven’t been paying attention.
Iona-fordham score? Chshl playoff teams were set before tonights game (after chaminade beat st joe this afternoon)..st ant, chaminade, iona, fordham all in…just a matter of seeding
maybe Mike…maybe. You have a point and that would be a shame. There is no reason that JJ, Scarsdale and Greely with their money , large potential talent pool and access to rinks cannot be a consistant contender only the will and determination is missing
ip
I’m hearing it was a 3-3 tie
Congrats to Fordham Hockey team tonight clinching their playoff berth with the tie versus Iona. Not sure how many people saw the game, but Iona goalie played very well. Without him, Iona probably loses this game by 2+ goals. Nick Fiorentino, #16, scored Fordham’s 3rd goal when they were down late in the 3rd. Fordham almost pulled out a W, but Trevor Turnbull’s shot went over the goal with around one minute left. He left the rink after the game with what appeared to be a broken or sprained wrist. Once again congrats to Fordham on clinching and to both teams on a well played game.
Private and prep schools are of no ones concern here
Anon…..Some people do care about them!!!
Fine fine. @Bob abooey You are correct
agree. Let them put up a coney island blog.
if the JJ “program” has legs..then they should get working on their schedule upgrade ASAP
