Bring a little walking-around money if you’re heading to the mall to see Nyack/Tappan Zee go against Pearl River. It’s their first Coaches vs. Cancer game, and they will be raising funds to find a cure.
A note from yesterday, John Jay wrapped up the Conference I-B title with the win over Brewster.
I’m off today, so if you’re out, please leave a score. And we’re going to be live and online tomorrow night with the second LoHud Hockey Chat of the season. Details will be up later. I’m thinking we’ll start around 8:30 p.m. so get those questions ready.

Mike and cliff-
What do you bealive is your biggest surprise of the seas
I meant to say what do you think has been the biggest surprise of the season up to date?
Does anyone know if its true that standout Suffern Dman Steve Scholer is playing professional hockey in Switzerland this year for a team in Basel?
Zam-man is going to like this, today would be Frank Zamboni’s 112 birthday, if you go to
https://www.google.com
and click the banner you can drive the zamboni.
Scholer is playing in some JR B league that they call pro over their, its actually pretty bad, shows me he really didnt have a residence in Suffern to start with and then just up and leaves and goes back to Switzerland, its not its around the corner.
Wah!!!!
Cham 4 ip 1
Wow.. Iona started the season strong.. What’s going on….
If you don’t know what your’e talking about, please don’t post.
Chaminades only loss is to St Anthony..will be battle of Long Island for the title
Iona losing to st joe = no excuse..
Iona over a week off..rcds next Friday, then Fordham, Mary’s (must w), chaminade again, then a nonleague against notre dame west haven before the playoffs…chaminade and st Anthony are virtual locks..Iona, Fordham and Farrell fighting for 3 and 4 spots (though Farrell likely to not make..)
@Tough D
Thanks for the insight on Scholer I didn’t realize Suffern has a reputation in Europe and Scholer moved to the states to play at Suffern and then went back to Switzerland – obviously you have scouted Switzerland’s Junior B leagues – can’t wait for your next post and all your expert analysis about the skill level of Switzerland’s Junior Leagues
So I was on http://www.section1hockey.com looking at random stats.
Matt Lanza is the JJCR goalie.
Has a 10.803 goalie rating. (I have absolutely no idea what this means, but apparently it is pretty good).
Thomas Klinger is the Pawling goalie has an 8.309 rating. (Also pretty good).
But on further inspection…Lanza is facing 19.681 shots per game…Klinger is facing 37.171 shots.
This means that Cliff is keeping way too many goalie stats…but also means that JJCR is playing a tight team defense and Pawling….well…not so much.
Klinger is staying pretty busy and Lanza is snap-chatting during games.
The NTZ goalie is Stephen Varmon.
He has a goalie rating of over 10 and has only allowed 19 goals this year. Oh yeah…he has faced 30 shots per game…the most in conference 4
This makes him the best goalie Ned Bigby has never heard mentioned on the blog.
Other players under the radar:
Frank Gavigan…Yorktown 16 goals 28 points a sophomore
Chris Hagen ETB 30 points…a junior. Team has a total of 37 goals
Kevin Halpin Sleepy Irv Dobbs …gets some ink but seriously. 22 goals..15 assists…
Tom Mahoney…Suffern. Stay at home D. Looks like my kind of player. Good handle…slows the game down. Maybe one of the best players on the ice vs Pelham the other night.
Then I followed the link to amazon and bought some gold-toe socks. Thanks Cliff
Howell,
I made it up(not),Actually know a few guys who went over there to play and or play against those leagues, they didnt think it was good enough(from the horses mouth),but thats what they call pro hockey there,so if it makes you happy to think a kid who wasnt from Suffern anyway is playing pro in HIS homeland so be it.
@ Tough D and Howell
Tough D appears more credible. i believe him.
Old School
I guess the Wah!!! was for me
I meant to say its not like he moved around the corner or down the block.
Who cares where a kid from last year is playing this year – I believe that Tough D’s post says that “he knows a few guys who went over there to play” that’s credible to me, by the way I know a few guys …...
hmm, wondering if neutral is just another name for Tough D. How convenient to pop on at just the right time, between 2 Tough D posts just to post a comment backing him.
(especially since Mr. Howell’s post didn’t contain any info that would make him appear “credible” or not, it was an obvious sarcastic reply to Tough D’s typical nonsense)
Still trying to figure out exactly what Tough d is trying to accomplish since the only time you hear from him is when he makes the occasional appearance trying to bash Suffern. Does he just enjoy trying to stir the pot, maybe see how many other Suffern haters will jump on board, or does he just get some sort of cheap thrill seeing how many Suffern fans he can get to respond & go on the defensive so he can continue the banter (& try to make himself LOOK like he knows what he’s talking about)
IF Scholer IS playing in Switzerland, how lucky are we that Tough D just happened to be privvy to that info & just so happens to know a few guys who played over there. However, I don’t know how him playing in his homeland (where his father still lives) proves anything about where he lived in the US since both his mother & sister lived here.
Since I’m down to my last two cents in my pocket I might as well throw them into the blog – everyone at S.O.R. knows that Scholer is playing juniors in Switzerland – it’s not exactly breaking news – and I don’t know anyone who played in Switzerland and somehow I found that info out – maybe from ESPN.
I would still like to follow the logic of how Scholer didn’t live in Suffern because he lived in Switzerland prior to moving to Suffern – my parents were born in Ireland – I lived in Ireland for two years and I also played sports in Westchester growing up – I wish there was a blog back then – unfortunately I don’t think anyone would have cared – I wasn’t all that great LOL
@ Nuetral I’m hurt deeply that anyone would think that Tough D is more credible than me – that could be the biggest insult that I have had to endure since my wife commented on my body last week.
Apparently, Tough D is fake and never actually existed.
Mr Howell was the victim of a cruel and elaborate hoax.
Ned we wanted those guys under the radar…..here in southern westchester we are very proud of Hagen and Halpin. “Hags” just like his division 1 brother at St. Lawrence is an offensive machine, I have not seen anyone better from the blue line in this year..apologies to Henderson who I havent seen this year. And “Halps” leads the section in goals as a defensemen! Stuff only reserved for guys named Santini and Pesce. And both of these guys play in the toughest division in the section. By the way, your a Rockland guy right….I agree Varnom is very good. and to go along with Mahoney, Sufferns Caruda is as smart as a defensemen as they come….also shout out to the North Rockland Coaches for the improvement their team has made, they have ETB coming up and while I like Hags, Power and Lilly, I dont think they will repeat their early season win, I dont think North Rockland is going to lose too many more.
Thanks for clarifying that Mr. Howell, although I had heard a rumor about Scholer playing in Switzerland, I was unaware that it’s true… and that it’s common knowledge. also, thanks for proving my point regarding the logic behind where he was living the past few years.
@Ta-Da….was all over it yesterday and wasted 1st hr at work in the office playing that game ! Thanks for the shout out
One day the accusatory fools on this blog (see Tough D) will realize that Scholer was born in Good Sam hospital in Suffern. The kid is from Suffern but due to family issues, which is irrelevant, moved to Westchester County. He then returned home to win a state title. You are not recruited when you return home. Same with Stark, a local kid that was sent to private school, but for whatever reason; financial, playing time, etc returned home. There are many kids in Sec 1 hockey that have far more dubious path to their teams but most of us are respectful enough to make it a non issue.
Amazingly enough, I agree with old Nedly, and especially on Halpin Gotta love the way he plays the game. Got to see a lot of him this year and Mike’s description of him at the begining of the year as “a one-man gang” is very appropriate. Good player. Good kid.
@Tough D
this guy is really making himself look silly. Firstly, saying a swiss jr b league is pretty bad exposes the guy for what his real motives are. Starts off with the league is poor and moves into the HS past of Scholer. Swiss junior hockey is certainly on the up tick. It’s not at USA, Canadien, Sweden or Czech level but is vastly improved in the last 5 yrs and had a very good performance at recent world juniors. You can’t have poor junior teams, including junior b, be a poor league and have such improved in your top juniors. Just another cheap shot at a player.

I’m all for sticking up for these guys against the “illegal residency” conspiracy theorists, and I do so fairly often, however you are confusing Scholer with Sanchez. Sanchez is originally from Suffern, lived with one parent in Mahwah for a couple of years, then moved back to Suffern to live with the other parent the summer before 9th grade.
Scholer is originally from Switzerland. Moved to this country in his early teens with his mother & sister, then they all moved to Suffern the summer before 10th grade.
As an aside, Scholer always had a decent sized fanbase in his native Switzerland. The great thing about the web is that you can see where all of the hits to a website come from. During Scholer’s three years on Suffern, there were multiple hits on section1hockey.com from Switzerland on almost a daily basis.
Cliff,
Are you able to tell when I go on your website – kind of Big Brother Stuff – I’m going to put on some clothes the next time I going surfing the net
Ok Cliff
Not confusing Sanchez with Scholer. I know both families and I do know the Switzerland connection. I will, on your advice, inform Steve’s family members that they are incorrect.
Kinda creepy the level of info known bout these kids.
Mr. Howell-
Yes, I am. And please lose the red thong. It makes me a littl nauseous whenevr I see it. Love the tramp-stamp, though.
