Let’s get ready to … eat a slice of Sicilian.
Mamaroneck and Suffern are playing at 5:30 p.m., which means we are going to encounter rush-hour traffic on the way to Hommocks. And that sounds like an excuse to leave a little early and stop into Sal’s for a pregame slice.
It’s been a lopsided rivalry of late.
Suffern is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings between the historical powers, and has outscored Mamaroneck 47-13. Yikes. And believe it or not, these teams have only met in the postseason twice in the last six seasons. There is still plenty of emotion, but this rivalry needs to be competitive again or it will be on life support soon. Heck, the Tigers haven’t beaten the Mounties at home since 2006.

I’ll be at the game, clearly, and you can follow me @LoHudHockey for updates if there’s a cell phone signal and the wind is blowing in the right direction. And let’s make those predictions now so you can rub it in later. Leave an update if you’re out watching other games, or tweet at me and I’ll share the news.
Have fun.
Also, if you’re going to watch Mahopac and John Jay tonight or the Byram Hills and Fox Lane tomorrow, bring a little extra cash. All four teams involved will be raising funds in support of breast cancer research. You will see plenty of pink game apparel. There will be raffles, chuck-a-puck contests and bake sales, all raising money for a good cause.

I am thinking like 6-2 Mounties, maybe 5-2. They should be well rested and ready to roll. If it was a one goal game, I would be shocked.
As Mike said, leave early, traffic will be an issue.
Suffern fans,
Mike D is bang on. If you do leave early and get to Mamo area with enough time, definitely hit up Sal’s Pizzeria. It is arguably the best in the Sound Shore area. Regular, Sicilian, White, Salad….all slices are awesome.
Sal’s is legit….and a must hit. But if Sal’s is mentioned when talking about a game at Hommock’s, where is the mention of Johnnie’s in Mt Vernon when talking about a game at The Ice Hutch!!?? Literally the best pizza ever!
Pizza
How do I get there? I’m at the Ice Hutch next week.
iona looking to sweep season series with st. anthony (won games 2-0 and 2-1)
the best pizza places in the tri-state area all get their tomatoes (and other ingrediants) from the same italian grocer/import company in the bronx – can anyone guess who??
johnny’s = another level
as old school as you’ll get
old man still works there..has a hump on his back/neck from leaning over rolling and powerdering dough all his life…cash only…no delivery….no slices…gotta love it
their trick is in their dough (their mix of yeast/flour, and its the thinnest pizza ever)...also, they they put the cheese on the bottom, sauce on top (traditionally its the inverse)...this way, the dough stays crispier…plus, their gas ovens are hundreds of degrees hotter than a typical pizza oven (pizza goes in for barely a couple of minutes)...they can do this because they dont have slices there waiting for you…theyre only made to order…hence, the closest thing to a pie in italy youll get in our area….place is restaurant style…daughters/nieces are the waitresses…old man, sons and nephews are the pizzamen…95% of the people who go order pizza and nothing else…place has been in mt vernon since 1917, in their current location since 1942…gotta be 3 generations at least
theyre on lincoln avenue a couple blocks away from gramatan in mt. vernon (right on the edge where it gets bad one way and where fleetwood is the other way)
johnny’s you can eat a small pie yourself (lots of guys can do a large)
old school description is accurate
Gotta agree. The pizza there is the best!!
Headed down to the Hommocks tonight after a tough 3-2 Suffern modified loss there last week. You’d have thought Mamaroneck had won the Stanley Cup the way they celebrated afterward. It will be a different story tonight. I see the Mounties jumping out early and often with the final looking like Suffern-5 Mamaroneck-1.
sal’s = mastered the art of what an American is looking for in a slice
johnny’s = mastered the art of what an Italian who just got off the plane is looking for in a slice
Mike-
If you want something wackier than two playoff meetings in the last 6 years (actually, its 8…you have to go back to 2004 to find their 3rd most recent playoff meeting…but who’s counting?), how about this. Suffern’s been in section 1 for 28 years now, and as much as these two teams are always thought of as the 2 D1 powerhouses, they have only met in the section championship game 3 times…once in 2008 and twice in the early 90’s.
@ Mike
The earlier post is correct. Coming from Gramatan off the Cross County Make a right onto Lincoln by the Circle. It will be on your right just before the gas station…one story brick place. Things to know:
1) Worst parking lot in the history of the world
2) You can only order by the pie but it is thin and crispy and you can handle a pie on your own. You won’t believe how good the plain pizza is.
3) Salad is great, Garlic Bread with melted mozzarella amazing
4) It’s not super close to the Ice Hutch but 100% worth the trip. I’ll buy you a sicilian at Sal’s if you don’t like Johnnies!
5) I’m gonna need a report back. Enjoy!
@C
I have no idea who does it, but I’d love to know where they get there ingredients. Please inform!
So, the only time Suff and Mamo met in the finals since the early 90s was when Conner sniped Natoli to end the Mounties season long unbeaten streak? Mamo took advantage of their single opportunity, I guess. Where is Chapanese?
A complete analysis of the Class of 2015 AND restaurant reviews.
Is this is a great blog or what ??? Now if JN can sign Brent Musberger to revive “Hky Mom” of the week feature, we will have a perfect blog…LOL u gotta love Brent!!!
Atmosphere at the Hommocks gets Mamo 1. Still Suffern 5-1.
lol
sassone wholesale groceries on morris park in the bronx – supplies anyone who has an amazing sauce/pizza in the tri-state
Are there two Natoli’s? Tom played goal around 2004-2007 for Mounties
I’m from WP he ended our season 3 years in a row
sal’s and johnny’s are literally 2 opposites
totally different experiences
but…if you know food…you’ll love them both
parking comment is true – parking lot can fit maybe 10…gotta street park the rest…if you go on a friday night or saturday night or saturday for lunch…just drop someone off so they can get a table (ive been on a friday night where it took an hour)
also, you know theyre killing it when theyre closed sundays, mondays, holidays and take their own week long vacations sporadically lol
Tom Natoli and Brian Conner were HS seniors during the 2007/2008 season. See Cliff’s website. Those two are listed on the All State team for that season. Feb 25, 2008 was the Section Final game at SOR (final year that higher seed hosted- now its at West Point) where Conner ended the Mountie’s season long unbeaten streak with a late goal.
@Cliff Clavin
Make it 4 Suffern/Mamo Section finals. Year 1 (1985) Suffern 12 Mamo 3
If you dont feel like pizza by the Ice Hutch, there is the Jamacian patty place down the street from McDonalds on South Fulton . I think Musburger was there with an Alabama sweatshirt—or was it Ned?
http://www.royalcaribbeanbakery.com/behind.htm
I stand corrected. Make it four. Thanks for keeping me honest. You have a great memory for this stuff, Suffern85, and if you happen to still have any pics or newspaper clippings that I can use in the history section on the website, shoot me an email at info@section1hockey.com.
Also, @fanotgame, yes there are two Natoli’s (three, actually…they have a sister who did not play). Tommy was the goalie fotg was referring to, who graduated in ‘08. His older brother Mike graduated a few years earlier (I want to say ‘04).
Mamo stands absolutely no chance tonite, and here’s why: they give up goals by the bushel and Suffern gives up virtually nothing – around a goal a game. Suffern is much stronger on the back end and has a huge advantage in net. If Mamo wants to give themselves a chance they will dump and chase. However, that is not their style. They consistently attack and against a great defensive team like Suffern that also has a great transition game, this is a recipe for trouble. 7-1 Mounties final.
Johnnies is def old school and the best. Can do a whole pie by myself. Thin crust well done oh my!
Sals is great as well totally different pie.
Getting back to hockey I say suffern 6 Mamo 2. Still hard to believe Mamo lost to Pelham.
Am calling a suffern 9-1 win
The Sean Hagan years (w/ Glaser and Jackson) Head to Head record (3-3-1) fairly even series
since they graduated: 0-7 with some close calls and some blow outs
This afternoon is a good time for Rye to step up its game. Let CTWN stick around and things could get tense at the mall. Time to get on a roll leading up to the important upcoming matches with DII contenders Pel, Jay and Scars.
Im a John Jay fan and i can tell you tonight should be a great game with Pac, both teams hate losing to each other and usually its a pretty chippy game. Should be a great one, looking forward to seeing John Jay’s offense vs another good team.
Yes, the last time Mamaroneck Modified beat Suffern…. Suffern realized goaltending was a major problem and got Stark and 2 other players to make sure that when they were older, Mamaroneck did not beat them on varsity.
Old School Mountie… are you serious? You upset that the kids were excited to beat their most hated rival? Those poor suffern boys must have gotten an earful of foul language the entire bus ride home.
Funny though, old school does not state that the suffern parents were ecstatic when suffern tied the score 2-2 in the third period. Going nuts in the stands. Then were quickly silenced when mamaroneck made it 3-2 10 seconds later.
Don’t be bitter old school. If you recruited properly, Suffern mod would have won.
Suffern missing one of their best players (Tiso) with a broken foot. So I think the game will be closer. I say 4-2 Suffern.
All that suffern dominance tells me one thing. Chap isn’t as good of a recruiter.
Mamk 4. Suffern 2.
I think it could be a good game. RFA is probably very similar to Suffern. Clarence is probably just a step below Suffern. Mamo lost by a goal on the road to RFA in that funky little rink. Also lost by a goal at home to Clarence after completing a game about 8 hours before (like a Bantam halloween weekend schedule). Mamo also easily managed WP (albiet at the Jungle) while Suff had the eye poping reult at Ebersole. Suff easily managed Pel who in turn held on to beat Mamo by a goal. If Mamo forwards commit to defense (third man high), dmen play smart (only low risk pinching) and the Mamo goalie has a good game, the Tigers could get the win or tie. If just one of those doesn’t happen, Mamo loses by 4 or 5.
Ice Man,
You want better recruiting for Mamo? We could always bring back Zegras out of retirement.
“if the mamo fowards commit to defense, if the dmen play smart, if the goalie has a good game” if my aunt had b***s she would be my uncle. Not happening
Even without Tiso Mounties take this rather comfortably, 5-2.
This game is at the stupidest time, seriously would of loved to be at this game.
FOTG I agree with you, the defense takes way too many chances any consolation the last time they played Suffern (last game of last year) Mamaroneck had a defensive game plan and lost 3-1, if they play like that and get some breaks they will make it close, playing at the Jungle helps…If they play like they have been, it could get ugly. That 10-0 a couple years ago still stings…
Hope its close, good luck to both teams…
prediction Suffern 7 Mamo 1
Sleepy 7hollow beat JFK 2
After the frist suffern Mamo 1-1
York 2 brew 1 mid 2nd
what is going on in Suff-Mamk game? Getting a tweet every 15 minutes isn’t cutting it.
Correction 2-1 brewster end of 2
Clarkstown beat Rye 5 -2, I knew they were going to sting someone sooner or later.
Nice big Win for Clarkstown, were getting better every game and Have one of the best players In Section 1 and we will Make a play-off Run and may even go deep!!
Mamaroneck will blow this game, Suffern isn’t going to fold that easy!!
Congrats Mamk. Sounds like it was a good game.
Congrads to Mamaroneck in a Big Win tonight over Suffern…....Section 1 is wide open for the taking…the Rankings next would should be intresting!!
The bad JuJu has officially ended!
Congratulations Boys! Keep it going!
Gap has closed, don’t know about wide open. But should be interesting
Oh my! What will the Suffern posters who made all those predictions do now?
Suffern Diffinitly missed Tiso tonight who brings alot of speed and grit to the game, still thought Suffern would have won a close one. Congratulations to Mamaroneck for Making section 1 alittle more intresting.
Sorry suffern. We wrecked your #1 ranking once again.
2nd long bus ride home for the Mounties. First their modified loses to mamk at hommocks, then the varsity.
Mamk was much better in periods 2 and 3.
Btw. Great predictions by the suffern bloggers. You couldn’t have been more hopelessly wrong.
Congrats to Mamo. Very good win! But I would never count Suffern out in the end of this all.
Hey. U wanna read something funny. Read the very first post by viola rd on top. LMAO.
The state is wide open as well this year.
MHS Fans,
Outscored in the previous 6 games 30-6 and you are crowing about a 1 goal W at home with a senior heavy team. Time to settle down a little bit, nice win but long road to go.
You’re right N-W, first time that I could remember that there were no clear cut favorite in either D-1 or D-2. No team has been been dominating.
Bobo. With the sour grapes. Typical suffern crybaby.
You are such a hero. I’m sure nobody else in the history of sports has ever predicted a win for their home team and ended up being wrong. Keep hanging your hat on on “ruining Suffern’s #1 ranking” and beating their modified team, those are the top two tiebreakers in the standings right??? But let’s be realistic here, Mamo and Suffern both have a hell of a way to go to. Huge win for Mamo’s confidence moving forward. As if there was ever such a thing as a great loss, this is one for Suffern. Ever since the undefeated Suffern team lost to Mamo in Section final back in ‘08, after beating them twice in reg. season, I strongly believe losing games like this is what builds champions. And you can be sure Schelling will remind them in practice this week. Bottom line, it’s high school hockey and anything can happen on any given night and that’s why we all love it so much.
Hahahahahahajaha. What a baby.
- Suffern D was shaky when Mamo pressed it deep, but rarely did so,
– Mamo with some really dumb penalties and still won –
– goal (supposedly) taken away (not sure if ref ever signaled, but mamo players did)
– bonehead play to give up a goal with 16 secs left.
– 5 on 5 they seemed to play about even.
– Suffern seemed rattled when mamo played physical.
– both goalies did not have their best games.
entertaining HS hockey game.
So Rye can’t do something that Suffern does in their sleep (beat CTWN) but Sufff can’t do two things that Rye has done (beat WP and Mamo on the road). The Section and State is wide open. Saw the Suff kid tweeting its difficult on the road. All of Rye’s 20 games are on the road this year. Garnets need to get past that and get back on track. They have been meandering since the McQuaid game before Xmas.
MHS Tigers,
Not a Suffern fan, live in MAMK, coach in the program, including some of the kids who were on the ice tonight (years ago). Nice win, big rival, but it is one game. 1 win does not make a season. Let’s see it in Sectionals, then you can crow.
My god can Suffern bloggers cry even more? What a bunch of babies. A long way to go for what? mamaroneck does not plan on winning the state, they plan on winning their next game. And Suffern should worry about winning the section, because right now they are 0-2 vs. any decent D1 teams in the section.
yeah, losing to mamaroneck is really gonna help them be a better team…. keep telling yourself that. Guess what , if suffern won it would help even more. I don’t see how those suffern kids can have any confidence left. Mamaroneck was the better team in the 2nd and 3rd period, and Mamk won even though their goalie did not have an especially good game. Just get your hankerchiefs and stop crying. You lost to a better team tonight. Move on. Nothing to see here. Hope you at least had some pizza at Sal’s, so your trip to Mamaroneck was not completely miserable like your blog posts are.
No #1 ranking for you.
I went to the Jungle instead of the mall tonite. I don’t think the game was as close as the score. Mamo goal waived off. Mamo draws bar on the 2 on 1 early in the third. Almost all of Suff’s SOG on the pp or when they pulled the goalie . Suff a small team that avoids contact. Thinking pel will grind them on tues at the hutch. ESP if Carudo can’t go. If Pel wins, they should have the top Sectional ranking.
shaping up as an exciting game. With Pelham beating Mamaroneck and White Plains this week and Rye starting to struggle it should be interesting. It is strange FOTG, White Plains and Mamaroneck beat Suffern, Pelham beats Mamaroneck and White Plains but loses to Suffern. Its wild
I seem to be confused with the whole crying thing. Not sure any one of those posts are complaining or crying about anything, Mamo beat Suffern tonight fair and square.
A long way to go, as in growing to be the team that is playing their best hockey at the end of the season. Just ask Ed Witz over at Pelham. Seems to be his philosophy year in and year out and they are always right there with the best of them when it matters. You don’t win championships in the regular season, you build and move towards an ultimate goal, ONE GAME AT A TIME.
And if you don’t understand how losing to your rival in a close game can help you be a better team moving forward, you must not have played many sports before. Keep believing you’re the “better team” while we keep “crying” and we’ll see you when in March, when it really counts.
excellent post, and very true. Good win for Mamaroneck tonight and Suffern will certainly bounce back. Pelham with the two wins against White Plains and Mamo look like the d 2 team to beat once again. When they get their leading scorer back coupled with the grind hockey they will be tough. They seem to be getting better with a very young team every week. Suffern is too good not to bounce back and its sets up a more competitive D 1 playoff scene then we originally expected
Wow, I predicted all of this in early November.
I questioned the first round of rankings and predictions based on an educated hockey rationale and made quite a few enemies on the process. I love how all of you veteran bloggers now jump on the parity band wagon
Great game by Mamaroneck. Full credit to them and their team-defense play. They outworked Suffern most of the game and took the body all night. No excuses folks…only a tip of the hat.
Mm – I never begrudge players being excited to win a game, especially against a rival. I thought the kids were over the top with the throwing in the air of sticks and gloves but to each his own. I suppose you can’t fault the players as much as the coaching staff if (and only if) they did not address the excessive celebration with their team after the game.
I love how the Suffern posters spin and use sports cliches after they lose they did the same thing after losing to WP, then started their arrogance again after a few wins. Even these posts are thinly veiled arrogance
you are kidding right? You predicted what? No not really. Suffern Pelham Mamaroneck and Rye JJ and Scarsdale and White Plains are still the top teams. The fact that they beat each other once in a while does not elevate the rest of the section, including your team
Old School nice backhanded complement. If you really wanted to congratulate why not just do it?
Arrogance
Smart Hockey – please explain what you could possibly view as arrogance in my post. The first half of my post was complimenting Mamaroneck on a great win tonight and the second half was addressing Mm on the conduct of Mamaroneck’s modified team post-win last week vs Suffern’s modified team.
Come on in pre season the only two team in the universe were Pelham and Suffern don’t rewrite history and WP was not on anyone’s radar.
How much sh$t did I take for saying JJ should be a top team?
Old School- including both in one post was arrogant Couldn’t you have just complimented Mamo?
Get over yourself SH.
Congrats to coach Chap and mamo on a huge win. I saw John Jay tonite and came away very impressed with their style of hockey. This team is well coached and very unselfish and play a smart game in both zones, aggressive forechecking in the offensive zone and in the defensive zone always in position with their dticks in the passing lanes and shooting lanes. JJ is the real deal and should advance far into the D2 playoffs and with a good shot to take it all.
Old School you ask me to answer, I clearly point out your sour grapes(arrogance) and you tell me to get over myself How about a bit of honest on your part ?
you are right
on mikes preseason rankings wp isnt even on the verge
http://hockey.lohudblogs.com/2012/10/23/on-another-subject-lohud-hockey-preseason-power-rankings/
Suffern is so over hipped and over rated with alot of selfish players, trying to skate the puck through everyone, if they play like this they won’t beat any good teams, yeah they can beat up on the weak teams and that about it!!
John jay was considered a top club along with scarsdale and rye. And smarthockey you never predicted White plains would be good either.
nothin like parents arguing over some high school puck just sit back relax and toss in a lipper boys
John Jay is the real deal, they could win it all.
I think Clarkstown and Mamo wins are great for the Section. It tells all the so-called experts how wrong they are and reinforces what a waste of time the rankings are.
Teams like Suffern, Rye, and Pelham have always have the target on their backs. Every team circles them on their calendar and wants to make a name for themselves by being the one to beat them or shut down their star. You have strong teams like Mamo and WP and then you throw in emerging teams like CTown, JJ and Greeley and we have a whole bunch of teams that could win it all in both D1 and D2.
Only rankings that matter happen when the tournament is over. The rest of it is ridiculous waste of bandwidth
OSM
Really? Mamaroneck was 0-7-1 against Suffern in the last eight games, and you’re going to critique the celebration? Give them a moment to enjoy life.
@parity, you are so right on. The D1 and D2 playoffs are going to be great this year, hopefully there will be a few more upsets before the end of the year to make it all that more intersesting.
Mamo enjoy yourself ,you won a one goal game at home during the regular season. If you are lucky enough to see Suffern in the playoffs ,you will lose by at least four goals . You heard here first!!!
Is there a way that Greeley can end up playing John Jay for the DII title?
I agree that Mamo had a good reason to celebrate, they beat the team that has given them hell and they beat the state champs.
@bIA, lets relax here a little, I think Pelham, Rye and Scarsdale will be heard from. A all BIA D2 final would be nice though, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves
I believe I am included in “anyones radar”. If I did not make that clear in my post I am truly sorry.
Lets face it in pre-season discussions, anything but total planetary domination by anyone other than Suffern/ Pelham or even questioned total planetary domination by Suffern/Pelham was met with chapter and verse on the laws according to Suffern/Pelham. Have I talked enough about Suffern/Peham? What do you think of Suffern/Pelham?
I can’t help it, humility and humor just ooze out of me.
what did iona do
I want to thank John Jay Hockey and their fans for teaming up with us in our Breast Cancer Awareness game tonight. Their support definitely helped in raising money for a great cause. Coach Smith and his staff are a class act. Oh and JJ played an outstanding game in the 4-0 win.
suffern and pelham on tuesday at the bubble will be interesting after beating the two teams that both beat suffern. If the pelham team plays 3 full periods of hockey not just 2 like last time meeting up with them it will be a great game.
@Mahopac – You are correct on all aspects, John Jay was a good partner tonight in helping raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness and they are an excellent hockey team that pushes the puck hard in the defensive and offensive zone and their goalie is real good – thay have a solid team.
Mike – Please pay attention to the content of my post. I clearly complimented Mamaroneck (varsity) on their win against Suffern tonight and took issue with the Mamaroneck MODIFIED team celebration LAST WEEK. I guess I should make separate posts in the future because combining two subjects in one post seems to confuse too many people.
Good win by Clarkstown over Rye. Wasn’t at game so aside from Ctown obviously showing its talent cant comment on Rye other then to say that FOTG’s comment that Rye better stop “meandering” could be a very kind and big understatement.
Heard there was a fight at the end of the rye game.
Ice Man January 11th, 2013 at 2:40 pm
All that suffern dominance tells me one thing. Chap isn’t as good of a recruiter.
Mamk 4. Suffern 2.
prediction was spot on until late goal by Suffering
OSM – you are going to criticize a bunch of 7th and 8th graders from celebrating a win over a traditional rival? Really? 12 and 13 yr olds?
You would have been better off taking Mike’s comment and zipping it….
Not one stick or glove was throw after mamaroneckk”s win went to goalie and celebrated!! no false reporting on blogs!!Suffern great game , was highly competitive.good for both programs to play a good solid competition.
OSM you’are usually fair and balanced.
But Mike’s basic point remains….the Mamaroneck Modified probably had similar reasons to celebrate….what is their record against Suffern Modified?
If it wasn’t in fact too over wrought, such celebration could be considered a compliment in light of the high regard that they hold Suffern Modified as a competitor.
suffern struggled tonight. The loss of tiso hurt big time. and not sure on carudos status as he had gotten injured. anyone know more?
Hey Chap,
Great win tonight. Sorry I wasn’t there to enjoy it. From what I hear the boys worked hard and played with their hearts. I will talk with you tomorrow.
Good luck rest of the way!!!!!!!!
Lmao. Old school mounty. It’s becoming obvious who u r. He’s not mad about the varsity win or celebration. He’s mad that a bunch of 7th graders beat his modified program and jumped on each other after an exciting 3-2 win!!!! Now that is the definition of sour grapes. And he wants the mamaroneck staff to reprimand kids for being excited after beating their biggest rivals? I’m sure the celebration was pure emotion. Not intended in hurting the suffern coaches or players feelings.
Funny how he cares more about a modified loss than a varsity loss.
Whatta baby. But when suffern a varsity smoked mamk 9-1 a couple years ago and celebrated excessively. That was ok on old schools book huh?
I guess Mounties cry when things don’t go their way. Please see your psychiatrist to help you get over that all important MODIFIED loss. I still can’t believe he’s talking modified hockey here.
St.Anthony’s 3- Iona 1
St.Ant’s showed up with a bit of an attitude tonight!!
great win for Mamaroneck, jungle is tough to win in. Hats off to both Mahopac and JJ and all of the other schools on their great support of Breast Cancer Awareness. High school Hockey this year so unpredictable and exciting, thanks to players for making this sport so enjoyable.
Hope Carudo isn’t Hurt to bad, Tonight is a night when Hill and Tiso playing on the same line would have made a big diffrence, I tip my hat to Mamaroneck on a well erned win.
Suffern modified coaches are a piece of work
Rye lost some key players in a fight last night? Whats the story? FOTG?? you are noticably quiet on this one?
5 players were given fighting penalties, including the top player from each team. Per blog rules no names will be written.
Whose in 1st place in the modified league? All this modified talk has tweaked my interest!!
Can’t believe this is even discussed! Please.
It will be very interesting to see how all of the penalties get worked out regarding the fight. Any fight, even just a punch, gets a minimum 4 game suspension plus whatever else may have been added in misconducts. On top of that with a skirmish there should / would have been a host of 3rd man in calls. (I wasn’t there). Will some of these get “swept” under since Rye is such a strong program? Will refs change calls afterwards or will the score sheet change?
Many years ago my sons Nyack modified beat a Mamo modified team, 2-1. It was obvious to all parents in the stands that Mamo had sent over a very young 7th grade squad. Nyack featured 8th and 9th graders with 1 very good player who eventually ended up playing private high school in NJ (following a long standing Rockland tradition, outside of Suffern)
None-the-less, it was also a Stanley Cup win type celebration by the Nyackers. Mamo’s reputation for excellence was well known to the kids…
Nyack parents cheered along heartily, it was wonderful to see our kids so happy. Heck, I even saw some Mamo parents with smiles on their face.
Of course we knew what the real deal…but for that moment…it was great. My son still says it was one of his favorite moments from hockey..celebrating a big win with his middle school friends..I still haven’t told him it they beat the modified “B” team..why ruin it.
So what happens next week with Mike’s Rankings. With recent events, how can anyone but JJ be number 1. What do you do with Suffern, two or three and how do you rank Mamo and Pelham after the last round of games?
Below is where we current are at about the midpoint and my overall post about trends, might be a good guide for future positive discussions instead of the envy and jealously fueled missives usually found here.
Is it possible to actually review any of my posts objectively or have I just poisoned the well too much?
LoHud Hockey Power Rankings – Week 7
1. 1. Suffern (8-1): Waiting for the schedule to pick up again.
2. 2. Rye (7-1-1): Benincasa is a player-of-the-year candidate.
3. 3. Mamaroneck (6-5): The biggest week of the regular season.
4. 4. Pelham (3-3-2): Hanging around .500 and getting healthy.
5. 5. John Jay (9-0): Big and fast and physical.
6. 6. Scarsdale (6-0-1): Creating opportunities with skill and speed.
7. 9. Greeley (9-0-2): Stood up to the best without blinking.
8. 7. White Plains (7-3): Getting deeper as season unfolds.

So we are about half way through the season and a few trends seem to be emerging:
No overall dominant team
Injuries are affecting several top teams
Strong goaltending can keep an average team competitive/Weak goaltending makes competitive teams average.
With parity, coaching adjustments and depth will determine game outcomes over the next 5/10 games.
Bragging and bluster seem to die down right after the bragging is proven to be absolutely wrong!!!
Smart Hockey,
Nothing is poisoned.
Don’t overestimate your own relevance.
If anything, your blog persona just makes readers root against the school that you support.
(and don’t ask me to explain the logic and thought process behind that statement)
The Rocket Fuel / Smart Hockey jousting is somewhat entertaining…I can only imagine that upstate readers think all downstaters are like you two…oy
Good atmosphere at Hommocks last night. Mamo students showed up.
The Suffern student section was pretty empty.
There were more kids there from White Plains than from Suffern.
Thanks to Mike D, Ned Bigby got to meet New Ro #27.
I see Mike has injected himself into the fray, okay it’s like that. LOL.
I believe that all Suffern detractors want Suffern fans to be mad and to post angry comments.
I see the bloggers posting how obnoxious Suffern bloggers are and the excuses they are making.
I went back and read, twice. I think there a couple but did’nt see excuses. Searched on Tiso’s name didn’t see anyone attribute his absence for loss. As a Suffern fan we don’t have to cry and complain. When you own the section and are defending state champs who has reason to wine. There are some ‘counterfeit’ bloggers passing themselves off as Suffern fans. If the Mamo wins sparks those fans to make the crazy posts, that’s cool with us. I saw one say “what are all those that made the Suffern win predictions gonna do now”. That’s a good one, we are going to do nothing. We are going to prepare tonights game and then winning another section crown. It usually works out pretty good for us.
“All year we’ve had this circled this on our calendar and we’ve been looking forward to this and working hard”... A quote by Mamaroneck goalie after the game. That quote right there is a problem for Suffern. I know for sure Suffern didn’t circle that game on their calendar. Talking to the kids the only game Suffern cared for was the home Pelham game and the Saratoga game later in the season. I don’t know if it was cockiness or just not caring, but going into the game last night there was no rivalry. Everyone is talking about a rivalry that was 4 to 5 years ago. The rivalry has now been recreated.
Ned- I completely understand the logic of your first two statements and probably deserve it.
Dying is easy, Comedy is hard.
Unfortunately for the upstate readers they have to live upstate and given I called off the fatwah against Rocket, they probably won’t have to experience us going at it any more.
On the other hand, if Rocket pisses me off I can always start another one.
Thank you for comment and level criticism.
This entire blog has gone off the rails.
We have a Suffern guy bummed that Mamo’s modified team supposedly celebrated too much after beating a rival.
We had a ridiculous list of “My kid is better than your kid as a Sophomore” by some parents yesterday.
All these predictions and polls of “our team is #1” are just ridiculous.
You people are ruining the game of hockey for any of the players who actually might read this blog. The only thing worth reading on the entire blog the last week was Nancy Haggerty’s story on the Raptors team and Mike D’s game articles. The rest of the commenters need a reality check.
OSM
My bad, you’re like my wife, changing the subject mid-thought. Hard to keep up. But … even more so if we’re talking modified, let the kids be kids and enjoy the moment. You and I have perspective. We know there will be bigger wins down the road for most of them, but at that moment it’s the biggest win of their careers.
Reality Check – It’s always been my impression that this blog was for fun. The JN writer guides the conversation and informs the readers as to local hockey interest stories as well as game highlights. It also has always served as an outlet for the spirited (crazy) hockey fans in the Westchester/Rockland area. The down times between games tend to get filled up with polls and trash talk but it normally is done in good fun. This is not the New York Times RC, it’s a high school hockey blog. Enjoy it for the mix of information, personalities and good clean fun.
Wasn’t at the game at the mall. Heard Rye played a lackluster game. I am more concerned about the fight at the end of the game. Rye teams usually show more restraint/composure. Looks like this talented team needs to get their shop in order. I plan to stay off the blog for the next few weeks while the Garnets do some soul searching and hopefully make positive strides towards what looks like a very competitive DII playoffs.
The only thing that is certain after persusing these discussions of Modified teams, Pizza, and ‘my sophmore is better than yours’, is that a Grammaratti intervention is definitely in order….
Smart hockey hit nail on the head right on great points
Changing topics mid thought? Hope you enjoy the coach tonight.
How do you get 5 fighting majors? Or did somebody jump in as a 3rd man? 5 on Rye or both teams?
Mrs. D …
Enjoy the coach? Ewww. Please tell me that was a typo.
@x-mountie, I completely agree with your assessment. Mamo clearly scouted Suffern and keyed on and hit Hill. If Tiso was there and on a line with him and they did that, Tiso would take it to them and score. I hope when Tiso comes back and we play a strong team, Suffern puts Hill and Tiso together to make this strategy more difficult. Well coached and well played game by Mamo. and I agree that OSM should not complain about excessive celebration in a modified game. As one blogger put it, I just take it as a compliment. Being very excited to beat Suffern means they respect Suffern and that it is a big deal when they beat us. Enjoy yourselves.
LOL. There I go changing thoughts mid stream again …....
There is no 3rd man in in federation. It is just a fighting penalty for every player
3 on ctown, 2 on rye
@Suffran, I agree Putting Hill and Tiso back on the same line is a must, when Tiso gets back. Those two play great togeather and Put Jager with them, I think wins like Mamaroneck and Clarkstown got last night are great for section one hockey, it will be so intesting watching how all this turns out. Everyone better watch out for both Clarkstown and Mamaroneck, they are both coming on strong. Mamaroneck I always thought was going to be good, but Clarkstown has really showed me something since they played Suffern and Lost 8-1, there going to be a tough out also!!
Oh my lord.
Save us G man! Salvation is in order!
Amen brother, Amen.
In Grammarati We Trust!!! AMEN BROTHER!!
