Pelham and Mamaroneck have both been hovering around the .500 mark this season, and they are undoubtedly better than what the records show. Nobody in the section is playing a more difficult schedule than the Pelicans, who’ve also had to deal with a number of health issues. Unless somebody comes down with this nasty flu bug that’s going around, the Tigers should be at full strength. Their issues have largely been self-induced, but a recent close loss to Rome Free Academy seems to have charged everybody up.
I’ll be down at the Ice Hutch for this one, so follow me @LoHudHockey for updates.
Clarkstown picked up the game in New Jersey after weather took a trip upstate off the schedule, and the Mallers probably opened a few eyes last night with the win over New Rochelle. I’m starting to believe Mike Gillespie is the best player to emerge in Rockland County outside Suffern that I can remember in the last couple of years.

morristown-beard has beaten st.augustine (gordon conference), lost to princeton day by 1 and lost to bosco by 4
Heard rumor . . .
DeYoung abd AJ both out tonight!
Rumor is incorrect. DeYoung should be back in net.
The only reason I think Pelham has a shot tonight vs. Mamaroneck even though they are banged up is because Ed Witz is an excellent coach. He’s done so much , with very little over the last 10 years.
However, I think Mamk has enough talent to win this game and win it convincingly. It should be an interesting contest.
Isn’t Mo Beard the prep school Matt Willows went to for one season (the one North got crushed in the power league and their golaie still made all state with a 5+ GAA)?
Probably Clarkstown’s biggest local win in awhile. At least since Clarkstown North beat a respectable Iona Prep team a few years ago (one year after Matt Willows left and one year prior to the merger).
That is one year after Matt Willows “graduated”. To differentiate from FOTGs post about his one year at Mo-Beard.
Tonite’s tilt at the Hutch is between the two Section One teams at have played the most NYSSSA ranked opponents thus far. To date, only 5 Section One teams have played at least 3 of their games vs. ranked opponets. Here they are:
Pelham- 5 of 8 (62%)
Mamo- 4 of 11 (37%)
Suffern- 3 of 9 (33%)
Rye- 3 of 9 (33%)
WP- 3 of 11 (27%)
FOTG what are you considering ranked teams? Not Q’bury I hope? I believe Mamk has played higher ranked teams than Pelham.
Do your home work On Mamaronecks entire schedule as of today Mamaroneck would have 7 of their 20 games against state ranked opponents in division 1 and 2 while Pelham has 11 of their 20 games against currently ranked division 1 and division 2 teams.
Didn’t he say ” to date” ?
Not talking about the full 20 game sched, Talking about games played so far. I should have said that Mamk has played a more difficult sched than Pelham not played more ranked teams. If you look at Ushsho, with all of it’s flaws, it has Mamk sched as more difficult than Suffern, Pelham, and Rye. Ushsho weighs too heavily the strength of sched in it’s rankings but for this discussion of who has a more difficult sched its an accurate measure. It looks at the opponents schedule and how they have faired. In the first 5 or 6 games Suffern’s sched may have been one of the more difficult in the state playing Massena, West Genny and Pelham, but as Massena and West Genny piled up the losses (each have 3 or 4 each) Suffern strength of sched goes down each time they lose.
Cliff-
When will the stats from this weekend be up?
Should be up at some point tomorrow.
Burnsey- In games already played, Pelham’s and Mamo’s respective NYSSWA state ranked opponents (top 15 in both DI and DII) are actually pretty similar with the Pelicans having more at both the tippy top of DI and and bottom
of DII.
Pelham’s 5 are comprised of DI: 1, 5 and 7 and DII: 6 and 15
Mamo’s 4 are comprised of DI: 2, 10 and 13 and DII: 2
Bottom line is that both teams are already battle tested and hovering around the .500 mark. Should be a great match tonite between two premier programs. Thinking Mamo might pull this one out as Pelham is still a little shorthanded with injuries.
Clarkstown lost 1 – 0 to Morristown Beard
1-1pel mam
Pel in control
2-1
Early 3
Pelham in a commanding lead 3 to 1 with 7 mins left in the third. The pelicans are looking solid out there tonight.
Pelham wins 5 4, they made it more interesting at the end there but they pulled through.
Sounds like it was a wild one at the Hutch. Mamo digs too many holes for themselves. Good luck Friday v. Suffern. It might be time for a pep talk from Chapanese.
Hard to say a lead is “commanding” when 4 goals were scored in the last 3 minutes of play. Nice win for Pelham. Nice to have Cullen back in the mix. He is a fun player to watch.
Yes, Mamaroneck scored two with the goalie pulled but Pelham was in control throughout and kept answering back. Lots of young players for Pelham out there contributing for Pelham. Big win for them.
Preview of what Iona should expect tomorrow

iona-nd game is postponed
Every Pelham opportunity ended up in the net. This was a very even game throughout. Mamo actually had more chances than Pelham but couldnt convert. Hit at least 3 posts. Pelham has nice depth and will be a tough out come playoffs, especially if they get No.15 back. Mamo needs to figure out how to get some stops on the defensive end and stop giving up soft goals if they want to be taken seriously…
I think Friday night will be a Good Night for Suffern, I was Picking Mamaroneck in a Close one tonight because Pelham was Missing some key players, nice to see there young guys stepping up, If Mamaroneck Gets behind on Friday it will be over quick and it my be an Ugly Score. I was thinking Mmaroneck was going to be the team to give Suffern a run for there money at West Point, I’m thinking no one will if its not close friday, and yes that Includes White Plains.
You cannot go by comparing scores. This had Mamaroneck success written all over it. Pelham plays a tough physical game and really took control from the start of the second period on. Pelham had only three seniors listed on the roster, they have a bright future. Tigers have some serious offensive weapons and size. Pelhams team defense looked very strong and Pelham kept the puck in Mamaronecks end for quite some time. Mamaroneck gets tested again on Friday and Pelham will only get better when they get 15 back and play the remaining grueling schedule they have coming up
If you don’t count the empty netter vs. Rye, Mamo has lost 4 one goal games to state ranked teams this season. They will find themselves on the right side of one of those type of games sometime soon. Maybe Friday nite.
Mamaroneck outplayed Pelham yesterday but just did not finish. Surprising for a team with such offensive power. Our forwards did not back check, however, and that was a difference. Pelham was outplayed but hung around and then popped one in. Next thing you know we panicked and pressed and gave up some odd man rushes. However, the league is wide open. Pelham will not go undefeated. There are many teams that can beat them. However, I think Scarsdale lost one of its top players for the next few weeks so that makes it tougher for them. We will be there come playoff time, and still can win the league.
You say Mamo outplayed Pelham but they did not back check and basically that is why they lost. That is ubsurd, back-checking is part of the game, obviously Mamo only plays going one direction. How can you say Mamo ot played Pelham and make the comment about not back checking, I hope you are not an attorney. Your argument is dismissed – next case please.
rj,
First of all, it is possible to outplay a team and not back check . In fact, it is possible to win a game and not back check. Does not make you a well rounded team, but it can be done.
Secondly, thankfully, I am not an attorney. I will say, however, that before you attack someone for giving their opinion you should be careful. You obviously are probably in the 9th or 8th grade. Please get out your dictionary and check on your spelling. Ubsurd is not a word in our english language. I appreciate your dismissing my opinion. It is your right to disagree. But before you personalize things, be careful.
Now hurry off to school. You are late for the bus. And don’t forget your snack for recess.
Mamofan completely wrong. Pelham out hustled, out hit, back checked hard, played full team D, and finished their shots. Unfortunately, they let down in the last three minutes of the game and let Mamo back in.
The 5-4 score makes this seem like it was a closer game than what it was. Mamk got back in to it very late because PELHAM LET THEM GET BACK IN TO IT…. by thinking that the game was over. Good job by mamk not quitting. But they just seem to play anything resembling a cohesive game. The kids give up on loose pucks, and seem to pick and choose when they want to work hard, and then coast up and down the ice on many shifts not giving the extra effort that Pelham kids do.
outplayed Pelham, but did not back-check?? that is one of the dumbest things ever written! and I have written a lot of dumb things on here. Also, Mamo giving up odd man rushes? is this your first Mamo game? they always give up odd man rushes, for years now. Thats how they play, D is always pinching and deep in the offensive zone, like it or dislike like it, Chap lets them do it, thats how he rolls. Go home mamofan, you’re drunk!!
Ok so u r not an attorney, u r a teacher, thanks for the correction, that would b called a typo Mr. teacher. Your point is still wrong, u play all aspects of a game if you want to win. If u do not back check u will lose most of the time except against very weak teams or is that an absurd statement?
Pelham always grinds and Mamo D men always take chances. As certain as the sun rising.
FH – game was 3-2 with 3 mins left before all heck broke loose and each team scored twice in the final two mins. Pelham didn’t LET THEM do anything….
Pelham, without two of it’s studs, beats Mamk 5-4. With the players Pelham cruises 6 or 7 to 2. Mamk outplayed, Mamk had more shots, Mamk could have won, it’s all been posted. Fact is a better team won and another team needs to come up with some answers, say by Friday or ugly won’t begin to describe. If a new poll was trotted out for most excuses, Mamk would be king of the hill. (not the team and not the coach. I have a healthy respect for that program)
I wouldn’t get too crazy with the ugly or blowout talk on Fridays game. For Suffern its a big game, big rival. For Mamo its def-com 5 and they get sky high for this at hommocks. I think it will be a tight game with Suffern’s D pushing them to a 1 goal victory.
For those of you not at the game here are some facts, so you can stop your spinning. For years Mamaroneck has had a very hard time with losses to Pelham, even though Mamaroneck has won more games against Pelham. So whenever Pelham beats Mamaroneck the spin zone starts. Yes Pelham was missing Schauer a huge part of the offense. Last year when Pelham cleaned Mamaroneck it was not because Pelham is better or played better it was because Mamaroneck was missing so many key players. Now this year Pelham wins again and it starts. Pelham was winning 3-1 with 9 minutes left in the game. # 8 for Mamaroneck made it 3-2 with 3 minutes left and Pelham answered right back with two more goals in the net minute making it 5-2 with 2 minutes left. That is hardly an even game. Mamaroneck, who has at least four 12th graders on offense that are better than anyone in scoring than Pelham has then scored the two goals after pulling the goal keeper. Those kids are very strong offensive players and they should score goals. The first period was even but the second period and most of the third belonged to Pelham and that was quite obvious. That truth may hurt Mamaroneck but its no shame losing to Pelham, who with maybe two or three seniors rostered, is young but tested. Mamaroneck has a very talented senior class and some very strong players but they did get pushed around and did not work as hard as Pelham does
mamk has a talented senior first line which will need to shine for post season success. However, inconsistent team play (lack of depth?) and costly penalties could be their downfall.
Pelham has one of better coaches in Sec 1 who gets team to play hard as a unit and focuses on developing players and winning hockey games.
A lot of exciting games in this season, hopefully this will continue Fri night in the jungle.
Burg- I think Pelham has everyone back except #15. They were missing Cullen (a player of the year type kid) for a while, but he played (and scored) last nite. DeYoung also returned in net. Wouldn’t really classify Pelham’s team last nite as shorthanded.
Those “talented seniors” are starting to do what they did last year as juniors. Not show up when it counts. When the pressure is applied…. it just does not happen. Lets not forget one of mamaronecks captains took a stupid unsportsmanlike penalty that led to Pelhams first goal on that Power Play. That is a ridiculous penalty to take in a big game. Undisciplined and selfish.
If that happened in Pelham, that C on his jersey would be removed 5 minutes after the game.
Fish,
Put down your Pelham pom-poms and get your head out of Witz’s ass.
You had a ridiculous post at the beginning of this thread about Witz doing so much with so little. Yeah, he has had no talent to work with in his tenure has he?
Now you’re saying he would rip the C off another kid’s chest for taking a penalty at a bad time.
Back off on the criticism of other team’s players. The are high schoolers, not pros. Be happy for your program and leave it at that.
@fishhead
Are you kidding me? Ripping a high school kid like that on the blog. Do you have any class? You think the kid doesn’t feel bad for taking that penalty and then you need to make a statement about taking the c off his jersey. Maybe you don’t know the kid that took the penalty but he is one of the most hardworking kids you will ever see. Yes he shouldn’t have taken the penalty but it was a mistake and to make a comment like you did is wrong on so many levels. Must feel good to be a grown man taking shots at high school kids. Grow up
Easy on fishnead, I dont think he/shes attacking the kid, hes pointing out a momentum changing event in the game. I dont think he/she is going after the kid. Its a bad penalty to take but I would not crucify him
No name or # was mentioned. So who cares if fish head pointed out a huge momentum swing from an undisciplined penalty?
Nobody’s getting ripped. After mamk had good chances on Pelhams end, that penalty and Pelham goal certainly deflated the tigers.
Nobody is questioning any kid if they work hard. But it was a fact of the game. The game plays out very differently if that penalty does not occur.
In my opinion mamk up to that point was playing great, and looked primed to go up 2-0.
good point, but kind of early in the game to say that turned it around, I thought the period was pretty even and once Mamaroneck went up 1-0 zip they had confidence. Pelham is resilient and came right back and scored. When Pelham was up 5-2 late and looking at Mamaronecks offensive power I was not surprised about their comeback. Pelhams underclassman were quite physical and unyielding on the puck. Mamaroneck will need little motivation to come out flying on Friday, should be a great game versus Suffern
Mo, Ice and Easy… are you all blind? Or all Pelham parents? Or both?
Fishhead took shots at “the talented seniors” and then one at the Captain of Mamo. He did not need to mention a name or number. It was the kid who wears the C. I’m surprised Fish didn’t call for Chap to have the kid stay late and sweep up the place. Because that’s what Witz would probably do.
FOTG
yes #15, arguably their best player, but top 2 for sure, a stud. You’re splitting hairs now.
C J had assist on the last two goals . . . . .
Burg- I have only seen Pelham once this year (v. new Ro) and a few times last year. In each of those games Cullen played several levels above Schaur. That is not a knock on Schaur, who is a very good HS player. More an indication of how much respect I have for Cullen’s play. Maybe I caught Schauer on off days and Cullen on his on days. In my limited viewing of Pelham, I see Cullen as one of the best players in the Section and Schaur (when he gets healthy) as an important conributor that any Sec One coach would like to have on his team.
HFan, how many assists does CJ have now? He’s gotta be the all-time NY state assist leader.
I am guessing the parent of the kid who took the penalty is upset that an implication of stating what actually happened in a game, has … well upset them. DOn’t worry about it. Live an learn. It is a blog. These are high school seniors… they could be fighting in Afghanistan in a couple months. They’re big boys, nothing was said that was SO horrible. A bit over the top, but you gotta relax.
Is there any reason why you are not upset with Mike who also stated in his article that the Unsportsmanlike Penalty resulted in Pelham tying the game. I call that a very Preventable Mistake. It’s not like when a player turns at the last second and the guy checking him gets a check from behind penalty. Nobody can tell what would have happened without that penalty, but it obviously does not help.
Bottom line is Mamaroneck lost. Beat by a younger team who was missing probably their best player. This thing could spiral out of control if Mamaroneck gets smoked on Friday by Suffern. It’s imperative that Mamaroneck at least play smart and hard and keeps the game respectable. Not sure how Pelham does it year after year after year, but that team gives Mamaroneck fits. I say Ed Witz sold his soul…
BTW, @ Pocket Puel…. I think I take umbrage to your name for some reason.
Enough with the “C” talk. It highschool hockey.
Pelham had 5 C’s last year. In other words, had no captain.
FOTG ????? You’re drifting. It wasn’t a referendum on who was the better player, the original comment was that Pelham was missing a stud player, whatever.
your original comment was that pelham was missing ” two of its studs”. My point is that they have one standout and he played in the game.
Had no captain? Unless you are in the locker room with a team on a daily basis you have no idea what is going on. Maybe they had a big roster? Or maybe its a chemistry thing, whatever maybe all teams should have had 5 as didnt pelham win the section title for the third time in the last four seasons?
