We’ve got an unusual number of quality games for a Monday.
RyeTown/Harrison has spent more time at Ebersole than any other team not wearing black and orange, and the Titans might be able to give White Plains some competition. New Rochelle and Clarkstown should be interesting. The Huguenots are the more explosive team, but the Mallers have more depth. John Jay and Scarsdale are both gearing up for postseason runs, and will no doubt be grinding tonight.
I’m going to be down at Murray’s, so follow me @LoHudHockey for updates.
We’re back to a normal schedule on the blog now that we’re done with the holidays, so the LoHud Hockey Power Rankings will be on the blog at some point this evening. I’ll unveil a new Player of the Week tomorrow.

Should be a great matchup. Scarsdale first line looks almost unstoppable they are gonna put up atleast 3 goals. So besides that given point the game is going to come down to defense. Both goalies look pretty solid I would give the advantage to JJCR though. If Burns plays Scarsdale should have an easier job on the defensive side of the puck stopping Bostwick and Smith. In the end I believe the combination of Schell, Nicholas and Blakely will be too much for JJCR to handle. Final Score 5-3 Scarsdale
I’ll be surprised if Scarsdale loses this game.
Sad news for the Suffern Hockey Family. We lost our Captain of the 83’ squad on Saturday. Great leader, better man.

Scars vs. Jay another good one between DII contenders. First real test for either team. Agree Jay’s goaltending a little better, but it has to be so b/c Scarsdale has more firepower. The games among the top 5 DII teams could come down to who matches up better against who. In this one, Scarsdale should be able to keep Jay’s offense to reasonable number, while Jay might have trouble with Scarsdale’s offense. Thinking Scarsdale 6-4.
That’s terrible news Suffern85
He was a good player back then. I’m, sorry for your loss.
Local top 10:
1. Suffern-As always, the gold standard.
2. Rye- its a long season with no home ice and the Garnets are currently in a bit of a rut. Need to push through it and build for the playoffs.
3. Pelham- Better than their record indicates. All teams have injuries, but not usually to their two best players. Pelicans will eventually get heathy and start to score.
4. Scarsdale- Continues to score at a nice clip. Let’s see if that continues as the schedule gets tougher.
5.Mamo- Jekyll and Hyde. The Tigers have a tendancy to dig holes for themselves before working their way out. Can’t do that on Friday nite at the Jungle.
6. Jay- We will have a better idea about this team after tonite.
7. Greeley- A bunch of good skates who played very hard on Saturday nite. Will they progress enough in the second half to knock off one of the other 4 DII contenders?
8. White Plains- a resiliant team who is no fun to play at Ebersole.
9. New Ro- some good skaters and a senior goalie who might be readying himself for a playoff run.
10T. Iona- Some nice wins and close losses against good competition.
10T. RCDS- very much under the radar, but they practice every day after school and play in the prep league.
Sad news indeed.
Scarsdale is hurting without Burns and there is still a question about whether he will play tonight. However, they are very powerful offensively and have 4 of their starters who play travel and seem to be superbly conditioned so they can double shift quite a bit. Scarsdale is too much for JJ to handle. Scarsdale wins 7 to 3
Mamaroneck needs to take advantage of Pelhams lack of healthy bodies. If Pelham still beats mamaroneck, even with all those significant injuries…. Pelham will own mamaroneck.
I’m thinking mamk wins due to having their best players healthy. 5-3.
iona looks for the season sweep of st.anthony friday night in the bubble
8:45 ice hutch
wins of 2-0 to open the season and 2-1 three days before christmas
rcds at hoosac on wednesday
last year’s game at rcds was a good one, hoosac won by 2 or 3 including an empty netter i believe
Sorry fan but I think I would go with RTH over RCDS. RTH is not flashy but battles everyone they play and has a goalie good enough to steal wins from better teams. RCDS is a a young team that still has to prove themselves.

I see a 6-4 win in favor of John Jay. Yes Scarsdale has a talented first group, but this isnt basketball and they cannot play the whole game.
Upstate- agree with you on that dangerous combo for RTH. I have them right on the bubble for top 10. A lot like their opponent today. Those two teams are likely to frustrate one another at Ebersole this afternoon.
New ro wins big tonight maybe 7-2. First line hard to stop
You’re right. They can’t play the whole game. But they will out score the other team when they’re on the ice
2-2 tie after overtime at Ebersole. Both goalies played outstanding.
You can say what you want about RCDS, but they aren’t a young team. Have around 15 upperclassmen on that team
Very exciting, hard hitting, well played game ends in a 2-2 tie. Ketchabaw tested more often than Stangarone and made two sick saves late in OT.
So much parity in the Section. Each of RTH ’s 3 losses this year are by a single goal. Great for the Section that so many teams are evenly matched.
The only reason RTH’s losses were only by one goal is the goalie. Ketchabaw is probably second only to Bunyan this year. Check out the number of shots in those three losses. From the game I saw, many were between the dots or high quality stops of rebounds and second chances.
Scarsdale and John Jay both step up in class tonight, Raiders have been without #1 defenseman since early December, could really hurt them tonight, JJ has a bunch of scorers, over/under is 11 goals. With a full squad, Raiders the pick, maybe 6-3, with current roster game should be a toss up. In other games, Clarkstown squeezes by New Ro and Rye Town Harrison beats Dubset, RTH is a good squad with a top flight goalie, better than people give credit for.
One of the most thrilling games of the year last year was New ro last second win vs Clarkstown
Stangarone makes ridicules save in OT after WP defenseman passes the puck to Bass right in front of the net.
@Smart hockey, we get it. All other goalies in the section making saves from the outside and only RTH goalie making saves in close. Please. I saw different. He played very well but many many shots on RTH from the outside. But you are all knowing, wise and non objective. Funny.
Anyone who is at the Scarsdale v. JJ game please send updates & observations. Thank you!
Section 1 D II
Uhhhhh. Mike is covering that game check twitter feed on right
Tweets have character limits, so I was hoping a passionate fan from either side might be able to give more live insight. Thanks anyway though!
wp had 44 shots not including 3-4 maybe even 5 back door wifts and ketchabaw made huge saves on break aways and rebounds i would say wp had 10-15 QUALITY opportunities. Bottom line RTH came to play wp needs to bring intensity even game and not rely on mcgee conroy and variano to carry the offense. WP must score more than 2 goals on 44 shots this team does not look like a tremendous threat right now. they are in a slump like mamo was however they aren’t playing teams as good as mamo was during they’re slump
@Section 1 DII
0-0 Half way through 1st
Thanks. Does it look like 1 team is carrying play? I hope Schell is ok.
Anybody know if schell is still down?
Skated off on his own
That is good news. Hopefully he doesn’t miss more than a shift. Who’s carrying play so far?
Not at the game little buddy, watching the New Ro vs Clarkstown stream.
Read it on a tweet.
Gillespie from Clarkstown CO-OP had 5 goals already…..
Gillespie 6
New Rochelle 3
Oh. Mike’s tweets and your info were different so thought you might be there. Never mind.
Any more recent updates on Scarsdale v. JJ?
Are you serious? Gillespie has a goal for five fingers and one more appendage?
That is insane!!! New Rochelle coach might want to put a guy on him at some point…just sayin’
Rocket fuel. Can you tell the coach his number to help him out. Thanks
Catchaball is a great goalie for ryetown harrison. Its impossible to get the puck past em and he keeps em in a lot o games. If Jonathan Jay had him theyd win the state.
“When Berlin Falls, All of Germany Will Fall”
Gee, I wonder who is going to get Player of the week!!!! Really nice win for Clarkstown.
Does anyone know time remaining in Scarsdale vs. John Jay?
10 min left JJCR up 2-1
Gillespie-6
Ramondelli-3
yeah thats it.
Solid win for JJ too.
Nice wins by J, Ctown and RTH. Hope Schell OK.
So, the only remaining undefeated teams in Section One play out of BIA. Time to stop with the “house league” stuff.
DII pretty wide open!
@FOTG
Nah, it’s too funny. Gets under some bloggers skin.
This year might have the more parity than any other year I can recall. Lots of teams have a shot this year.
Hope Schell is okay and back on the ice soon. Wonder if Burns played? It is hard to keep Smith off the goal column on the scoresheet. Good win for JJ on the road, and a nice transition into the more challenging parts of their schedule. BIA plays host to plenty of weaker teams, but their best teams are pretty competitive. All that matters is Sectionals and this year’s DII tournament should be more interesting than most.
Nice win for Clarktown again a team like new ro
new ro exposed tonight. hard nose hockey and they back right down. soft d that doesn’t challenge you and wings hanging at the red line. Gillespie had his way all night. maybe us rats might get a little respect now
Greeley plays JJ in 2 weeks, that should also be a great game. January 19th. Everyone keeps sayin D2 is open, but don’t forget whose always been the top dog—Pelham.
New ro did not stay at red lines. Watch the live stream. Goalie for new ro weak goals. They put backup in the maybe make a statement. New Ro not that good. only 2 goal scorers for the whole game is sad.
ketchebaw was great tonight but white plains missed many back door chances that, had they touched, would have been easy goals…ketch wouldn’t have had a chance. that said, they didnt touch them, or didnt direct them towards the net, one was an outright whiff. either way, it was a well played game on both ends and enjoyable to watch.
white plains doesnt seem to have the confidence they had after starting out the season so well. maybe they just aren’t that good, but i see a team playing back on their heels, not attacking. its all about the playoffs though and if they get it going, i don’t think there is any doubt that they can make some noise.
I have been telling you about the BIA teams, keep watching.
Mike Buhlmann was an excellent defenseman. He was a true leader and loved to play the game. He always had a smile on his face and generated that to all around him.
It was my pleasure to have coached him and he will be sorely missed by all especially the Suffern Hockey Family.
ETB 3 Mt Pleasant 1 Final
John Jay is a pretty good squad, they beat Scarsdale in a tight game that didn’t get decided until late third. Schell took a bad knee to knee hit on first shift, out with a pretty serious knee injury, left rink on crutches. Without him first line was way out of sync, totally lost their attacking speed and they were on the ice way too much to be effective. Nicholas got stopped by Lanza on at least two breakaways, didn’t offer much late in the game, JJ defense shut him down and kept him in check all night. Burns played for Raiders, but is out there on one leg and I don’t remember him coming off the ice at all. I believe Raider goalie got first varsity start, looked pretty good, first two goals were point blank off breakdowns, otherwise the kid was solid. JJ is gonna be a tough out as the season goes on, they are big kids, lot of upper classmen, good skaters with skill and hockey sense backed by a strong goalie, not a bad combo. Scarsdale needs to get healthy, their best defenseman is hobbling around, top scorer just went down, they look kind of thin right now, too bad the kid German is off riding the pines at some Prep school, he’d be a difference maker at this level. By the way, this would be a great playoff matchup if Raiders get healthy.
@bar down
Rye came to play? Really. I was at the game, u said yourself 44 shots on net 10 -15 quality shots on net. Lost count of the odd rushes. First period wp came out flat and still held their own. Third period totally dominated by wp as well as the ot. Ketch stood on his head unreal. Schedule really? Wp has played lets see. Mamo, Suffern , new ro , rye clarkstown not tough enough. They play Pelham thurs. sounds like a pretty tough schedule to me. Oh and I left out Scarsdale and Greeley.
JJ showed they belong last night. They were all over the ice. Scarsdale lost shell and JJ countered by putting two bodies on Nicholas for most of the night. Lots of opportunities for Scarsdale. They were snuffed on at least 3 breakaways. At the end of the game they seemed to have lost their legs. Burns played but was ineffective on one leg. Lots of guts though. If Scarsdale gets healthy, I agree the game would be a great playoff matchup. Think JJ is for real.
Have to agre with Fmog1, WP’s is a good team and has a schedule that tests all level of play, WP’s seems not to be hiding from anyone. Provided their goalie keeps playing well, WP’s is battle tested anf come playoff time they will be able to compete with any team.
agree
Regardless of injury missing players etc. as many have posted, you are who shows up. John Jay is much deeper and better than Scarsdale and carried the play all night. Every team deals with injury, last year Mamaroneck was totally devastated and this year Pelham has all major guys injured for the most part. You cannot expect to win the section with a few players you need a team. If you have only a few players who can play you need to get the others ready to play
All anyone said was that Scarsdale missed about 40% of their starting lineup, if Bostwick and Leprine had been out for JJ they would not be the same team that showed last night, Raiders were shorthanded due to injuries, plus they started second goalie. If you beat Pelham without Schauer and Cullen, it’s a different animal than beating them when they’re on the ice. Last night was a one goal game until late in the third, if JJ is so much better and deeper than Scarsdale why was it that close against a depleted team? Raiders were missing their #1 scorer (tied w/Nicholas according to Sect1) and their #1 D looked like he should be on crutches, JJ got a good win, but shouldn’t overstate what they did. I’d pay to watch the rematch, would be a great playoff game.
Why would Mancuso play his “second” goalie in a game that was supposed to be highly competitive. I would think he knows which goalie gives him the best chance to win. Don’t think Mancuso would have called him his “second” goalie, but heard he played real well, do you think the “first” goalie would have made the difference and pitched a shut out for the win
@blueliner- did you pull that number out of your ass? Scarsdale had all of their players for when the game started. Obviously losing Schell was a huge blow for them but their ”#1” defenseman was still there and present. Regardless, John Jay was up 2-0 into the middle of the third. When the raiders got a goal to make the deficit 1, Jay scored 3 minutes later to make it 3-1. It was never really a one-goal game.
40% were you even at the game? Schell got taken out by a knee to knee on the first shift of the game, never played again and left rink on crutches, Burns played, but obviously whatever has kept him out most of the year was still limiting him, he couldn’t pivot or push off one leg, that’s two of their five starters or 40%. And according to Section1 website stats, the Raider kid who started in goal had played 4 periods in 6 of the previous games, so I’m assuming he was their second goalie. All I was saying was that it was a close, competitive game, would be a great game to see if Scarsdale had all their guys. The goalie looked good, first two goals he had no chance on, first one puck caromed off the ref on the boards off a dump in and came right back to the kid who dumped it, all alone and he sniped it, second was backdoor on PP I believe, but kid looked good, whether he’s their #1 or #2 goalie he kept them in game. And that game was tight, tied into early second, 2-0 mid to late 2nd, 2-1 maybe 5 minutes into the third, John Jay was the better team, not by a lot though.
Blueliner- Sorry I misread your post. I thought you meant 40% of the team, not starters. I apologize.
New stat for section 1 – how many injured players you have. Nobody plays thsi game 100% healthy, its the nature of the game. injuries are part of it, stop with the excuses
No team is going undefeated. Scarsdale just got back from a 15 day layoff and did miss Schell after one shift. Also, Burns was hampered. Their number 3 D, Roberts, was out. They were outplayed but by a small margin. The JJ goalie came up big. The scarsdale goalie played well, but the JJ goalie stopped 2 breakaways by Nicholas, and one 2 on 0 from Nicholas and Blakely. It was a great hockey game. I think those teams would both want a replay. I know I would enjoy it.
Lots of justifying going on regarding the Raiders clear cut loss.
Missed opportunities (breakaways) are irrelevant ,just like the 3 crossbars and the buzzer goal waved off for JJ. It was a raider loss because they were outplayed …
