Rye is no longer spending weekends chartering upstate to find competition. The Garnets went up to Albany a couple of weeks ago and will spend the rest of the season traveling rink to rink down here while Playland is restored. Give them credit for going head-to-head with a wide range of local teams, which helps grow the game in our backyard.
White Plains wasn’t on the schedule last year. Rye didn’t play New Rochelle or Clarkstown, either. The Garnets also put RCDS back on the schedule and is playing RTH twice. Going upstate is always a big deal. Playing fast and physical teams and getting a chance to bond in a hotel room makes a team playoff ready, but there are some good teams in the section now, so this isn’t a bad alternative. Now if we could just get Suffern and Rye together.
Don’t forget to click the replay on last night’s live chat if you missed it. There’s a lot of information on there. I’ll be at Ebersole for the game tonight and you can follow the updates @LoHudHockey.

When was the last time rye played white plains
WP 4- Rye
3 2008. Tonite—WP 4 Rye 1Rye vs WP at Ebersole? Ill predict 3 people from rye get frostbite, and 1 from WP gets frostbite. So WP wins 3-1.
WP is a formidable foe, esp at Ebersole. Ice should be fast tonite. Thinking a low scoring, grinding afair.
I think good D will keep this game close. Possibly a 4-3 game for White Plains and a goalie who seems to be very talented. Bring your pocket warmers if you are going!!!
It has to be a low-scoring affair. I don’t want to pull the gloves off too often to tweet updates.
I recall there is a Section 1 rule regarding wind chill tempatures and games?
the windchill ?are you kidding me?
Insert postmans Russification of America speech right here.
This might be one of those, wear a plastic bag over your socks kind of nights.
I gotta tell you, I think the WP coaches should be the highest paid coaches in section 1. To have to coach all your practices and all your home games at Ebersole outside…. is brutal. I don’t know how they do it.
As long as the “real feel” temperature according to accuweather is 10 below or higher, they are allowed to play. If it is -11 or lower, it is required to be cancelled. Here’s the rule:
http://www.swboces.org/files/filesystem/Wind%20Chill%20Procedure.pdf
I think Rye wins this one 4-2, I just think White Plains had a good run, but its over, the Only way White Plains wins it, is if there Goalie stands on his had like he did against Suffern
Advantage to WP anytime they play at Ebersole, the colder it is, more of the advantage.
At 3PM it is 32 degrees at the County Airport with minimal windchill – I think everyone will survive the event – Ebersole has closed circuit tv in the warming room for the ladies!!!
BTW – WP charges no admission & provides two ice cuts…if you can’t handle 30 minutes with temps in the high twenties – stay home
Somebody posted WP 4 Rye 3 in 2008 – I’ll add WP 3 Rye 0 in either 2006 or 2007 at Playland – Anybody know why no games in ‘09, ‘10 or 11???
WP needs to start getting goals by it’s supporting staff or it’s Rye 3-1
I’m sure Santana meant to write wussification. It is cold, but geez, this is a spring day in Massena. Everyone will be fine except for the people who wear no shirts and paint their bodies (I probably just enticed Smart Hockey to go to the game now after that last sentence).
I’m annoyed that I forgot to watch the live blog last night. Totally forgot about it. Looked like fun.
The Mamaroneck vs. CTown game will be very telling about both teams.
I think this is a big game for Rye. Everyone got excited when I said Rye’s loss to Queensbury was a terrible loss, what would the mussings be if they lose this one; “it’s still early”, “it’s an away game”, “they were missing so and so”. I think Rye needs to re-establish themselves as a top 5 team in the state and not just a team that can beat anyone on any given night.
It won’t be easy but if Garnets have designs on playing past West Point they need, maybe for their own state of mind, to go out take care of business. As I have said, I root for Rye program and would like to see them sucessful.
Who exactly was Rye missing against Queensbury? Why did any player miss that game or any other?
Sorry Rocket Fuel, can’t afford the shrinkage
Rye will win tonight somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 or 5 to 2 and then go on a 7 or 8 game winning streak.
Rye up 2-1 almost midway thru 2nd
3-3 after 2
Thx. Hear Rye dominant so far in SOG?
Rye is losing 4-3. Don’t see how you can dominate when you are losing 4-3.
Now 4-4
wp 4-3 early 3rd period
barnburner WP up 5-4 10 minutes left. Rye’s goaltending very suspect..unusually so!
5-5
5-5 4:45 left
Rye wins 5-4
rye 6-5 OT
WP Played very well and has some studs..can see how they beat Suffern
Any idea what the shots on goal where for both teams? Seems like both goalies had a tough night.
Rye had over 25 Shots definitely but WP only had around 15-20
WOW seems like it was a great back and forth game. Congrats to Rye.
rocket
Comments on game. Who dominated if anyone, etc. Not at game but sounds like WP goalie had the better night vs Rye goalie?
a good win for Rye, but they have to be concerned about giving up 5 goals to a WP team that generally struggles a little on the offensive side, 5 goals on only 15-30 shots on goal
Rye should’ve won that game in regulation. they dominated in shots and possessions. A couple of lucky bounces for white plains and the rye goalie struggled. great win for rye against a good white plains team
win in regulation? they had to battle to get to ot. As for lucky bounces i believe the bounces went both ways. Mcgee has a wide open shot in front of the net and wp is call for a cross check away from they play. Not saying wp dominated or that the bounces went rye’s way however it was a great game and rye did have an advantage in shot and possession, they didn’t dominate wp as badly as mamo or suffern did. i would say 60% in wp zone maybe 65
Lucky goals for white plains? Was Rye’s goal to start the third skillful or hard fought? Don’t think so
”@Blueliner”
Thank you. Someone who actually has a handle on the game. I agree, bounces certainly went both ways
Mike Dougherty,
Can you please institute a new rule that only people who attend the game can comment on it? Yes you can be losing and still dominating because the shots on goal total DOESN’T MEAN A THING when you run into a good goalie.
1st period – After the most lackluster warmup ever seen to these eyes, WP comes out flatter than 3 day old draft beer. Rye DOMINATED the first 10 minutes. For those of you who base your conclusions on stats alone, faceoffs had to be 12-1 and scoring chances the same. Dumb penalty on Rye takes away their momentum and WP ties it on PP. 1-1 after 1.
2nd period – Rye DOMINATED first 8-9:00. Puck was in WP end much as it was in the first period. Then both teams decided to stop playing defense. Terrible miscues by both teams and goals come in bunches. 3-3 after 2
3rd period – WP has great start and sets tone for a good 3rd. Up and down the ice. Benincasa and McGee from WP establish themselves as two of the best forwards in the Section.
OT – Rye had a couple of shots from RW in 3rd & OT. They shot low and Stangarone made saves. McGovern shot high and whistled it by the kid. Game over
The puck was in the WP end for 75-80% of the game. Even Rubenstein will admit to that. I wonder if this win will satisfy The Burg or will he look at all the “expert” predictions and say it was “brutal” win because Rye did not win by enough?
Yeah ya want to come out winning but great for two top teams to play a tough, close one. Toughens em up going forward.
sla you are right.
Rye found a way to win when their goalie had an off night and their D and some forwards turned the puck over badly. Thats what good teams do. They find a way to win a game when one or two facets of their game stop working.
So much for the low scoring defensive battle I expected. This one was wide open. I should have known better. Crazy stuff can happen in the tight confines of Ebersole. If you were watching warm ups you would wonder aloud how Suffern could have lost to WP. Yes, the Rye goalie was off today, but that is not unusual when on a cold nite you watch the play at the other end of the ice for minutes at a time interrupted every once in a while by an icing or two. Then, you have to suddenly spring back into action. The Rye goalie should have skated to the wall and back every time the whistle blew, in order to stay loose and ready to go when necessary. WP is a very resourceful team. They have the goalie who can withstand a heavy onslaught and then have a few skaters logging major ice time who know how to save energy for a quick strike. Rye did hit iron on 5 or 6 occasions, WP blocked many shots and the Garnets must have registered over 35 shots to WP’s 15 or so.
Greenwich iona tomorrow 345 ice hutch
every game is the same story with white plains “we dominated them but someone had an off game and stangarone stood on his head otherwise we would have blown them out.” White Plains is a team that doesnt allow you to get quality shots in their defensive system, have the best goalie in the section, and take advantage of their offensive opportunities. That being said Rye is the best team in the section and played much better then Suffern did at ebersole and in worse conditions.
looks like ryes top line is one of the best in the section, if not the best. saw wp play suf, mmk and rye and the benecasa line was IMO more dominant than the Hill line although the hertz-feurgeson line was really good too. Rye looked solid tn, white plains, as usual packed it in defensively and played a tight scrappy game. they were able to keep it tight and apply the pressure with mcgee and conroy’s goals early in the 3rd to take the lead. rye, as always, is a very tough physical team and when you pair that with the skill on their first line, they are going to be very solid. a few quick notes, i don’t think either goalie looked great….stang probably didnt have his best stuff tonight…still gotta take that over most sec 1 goalies regular days…cant speak for the rye goalie (was that normal, was it a down game?), never seen him before….kevin mcgee has 4 stitches in his right thumb….he and benecasa play on the same team, not an excuse, he was good enough to play, but is there any doubt benecasa let his team know that an extra stick/hand check might not hurt???? i mean, friends are friends but i know i would have. either way, mcgee will be 100% monday for RT/H and it was clearly a well played game by rye and a well deserved win, but hey, could it have impacted a 1 goal OT game? maybe. does it matter? no. good hs hockey game, some pretty goals, some ugly ones, lots of hard work in the corners, very physical. rye skates very well…wish they played again.
also…rye and wp played in 07 i believe at play land, fans from rye got ugly, wp end of game celly wasn’t the classiest. that may have lead to the two teams not playing for a few years. IDK.
Got to give it to White Plains, they played an excellent game when many thought they would be killed, good for them.
I want to see Rye play Suffern. I am not going to go on about how Suffern is better than Rye because I personally have never seen Rye play. Everybody has their bad games. Rye against Queensbury and Suffern vs White Plains clearly did not dictate how good those two teams are. 6 goals on Stang? A Suffern goalie hasnt given up 6 goals in about 10 years. That’s far from an elite performance. We all want to see Suffern vs Rye!!!!!
Great game tonight. Rye was impressive. Good skating team well disciplined moved the puck well. Wp came out flat battled hard and was up in the third. Second line for wp played well. Plus three Not bad for a team that was not even in the mix to finish 500. With a few adjustments they could make some noise in the playoffs.
Sec1puck…..before the third period it was obvious something was wrong with McGee. He skated right by me wincing and you could tell he was in pain. To finish as strong as he did shows he is a gamer with some cojones. Kid can flat out play.
You’re right about the two keepers. Neither played exceptional. WP does pack it in defensively. Lord only knows how many Rye shots they blocked all night and how many Rye sent wide of the night.
I watched Suffern beat us a few weeks ago and watched Rye Beat Mamaroneck, Rye is not Beating Suffern, I don’t known how Suffern lost to White Plains they are by far a better team, but I do think Mamaroneck and Suffern will be a game to watch next week!!
Shots on goal 46-30 for Rye. It was close in second and third. Garnets had eight more shots than White Plains in the first and five more in the OT. And this was not a normal showing for either goalie. How about Stangarone, though, has an off night and still leaves with 40 saves?
@sec1. Please. When was the last time the Suffern gave up 30+ shots consistantly game after game. NEVER. Modeca and Stark great, great goalies but have NEVER,EVER seen as many shots per game as any other goalie in the Section (credit to the Suffern TEAM) Suffern goalies see a handful of pure quality shots each game over the course of the season Shelling would lose his mind if Suffern allowed an average of 30+ shots per game on his goalies.
Mike D,
Don’t fall for the same logic applied by others here. Shots on Goal totals mean nothing.
How many shots were directed at net is a much better indicator of who is controlling play. Rye had so many shots that went wide or that were blocked by WP.
What were the shots on goal in the 2nd period when Rye was in WP zone for first 8 minutes? 8-1? 9-1? Then WP scores off a nice breakout and rush and then again off of a bad turnover by the Rye center. 2 goals on two WP shots in about 1:00. Rye had outshot WP by at least 2-1 at that point of the game but was losing by 1 goal. The shots on goal stat is meaningless.
huge win for Rye against a big school team power. I have no idea why coming into the season people thought White Plains would be down. They have a lot of hockey players in that city and they have talent every year and so many kids in the pipe line. They should be contenders every year. Nice win for Rye
in order to get a lot of shots on goal you need to have possession of the puck, if you control the puck more than your opponent you are probably in control of the game. So shots mean an awful lot
Shots on Goal…read my last post again.
Shots directed at Net is a stat kept by every coaching staff in the NHL. It measures the Shots on Goal + Shots Missed Net + Shots Blocked by your opponent. It is a much better indicator of who is controlling play.
As for possession of the puck that starts with the faceoff and Rye won that total by at least a 5-1 margin on the night.
So don’t get lost on a SOG total without the proper context. That’s all I’m saying.
I am surprised WP was credited with 30 shots. Also surprised Rye was credited with 46. Many of Rye’s shots went just wide or just high. And WP blocked at least a dozen. And then 6 posts. That would mean the Garnets directed about 75 shots towards the net. Rye did dominate the puck possession, but not at that level.
To Sec1- we all want to see Suffern vs. Rye. It’s pretty easy for that to occur. Suff has MW twice this year. Inexplicably, Rye used a slot for North Roc. MW can play North Roc and Suff can host Rye.
Looks like there are some knowledgeable hockey fans who posted comments. I agree with poster who suggests only people at the game should post. Thank you.
@FMOG
I watched the entire game and since some think to comment you should be present then count me in. I think if WP’s first line had their “A” game going against Rye the game could have been different. It seemed to me that the first line was not in sync against Rye. The second and third line held it together for WP’s. It is always good to see others step up when the #1 line is not having its best game. Good job by WP’s, this team is a team to be dealt with and the strength shown on the second and third line will help WP’s possibly go deep into the playoffs.
If shots on goal means nothing, why the hell report on it? Why do they have a spot on every scoreboard that counts shots on goal? If a team out shoots another by a 2-1 margin, it does indicate that most of the play was played in one zone. Last night rye outshot WP. And everyone agrees that 65-70% of the play was in the WP zone, if not more. Coincidentally rye also had 70 percent of the shots or thereabouts.
Obviously the final score matters more than anything, but shots on goal do paint a picture, and usually an accurate one.
No way rye can be happy about letting up 5, and no way WP can be happy letting up 6.
What are u smoking…the WP “third line” got 2 short shifts !!!
That is the real WP problem, there is no effective 3rd line and that is why they are more effective in the friendly confines of Ebersole (second ice cut also helps a short bench). Remember – other coaches plan against McGee…no doubt about it…at Mamo, Schiff went on every time first line went out. No question…Second line is much improved since they moved the 9th grader up to skate with 22 & 23. The kid missed the 1st month with a broken arm. Change was made during the LP game and the two lines are much more balanced now.
NO ONE EXPECTED TO BE 7 – 3 at midpoint with about eight travel players…they all work hard and are a true TEAM…keep up the good work!!!
@smart hockey
You’re a dope, and obviously post under several names. You coming on the blog and assessing who’s making smart comments, is obnoxious and inaccurate.
Your comments are almost always exposed as false and misleading. As you try to convince people that the BIA teams are better than southern westchester. Until you make some half brained points of your own, save the assessment of others. You really are a tool, and a know nothing tool at that.
Smoking? Nothing, a few drinks maybe. Nevertheless, I noticed the first line with the WP’s studs not getting it done and granted most of the grunt work was done by the second line, I don’t keep stats on the games but I bet the second line was a plus 4 and the first line was somewhere around a minus 4. Just saying the second line steped up and the first line was absent. This is good for WP’s in the future, go easy, no harm meant, just trying to point out my observation.
agree with your post. Smart hockey is entitled to post but hes or she is fair game then. I find his posts totally riddled with non facts, misconceptions and spins. Obviously a travel hockey parent who thinks they know it all. He/she is not alone.
studS??? There are two studs on WP: McGee & Stang…period
My definition of a stud is someone who the other team’s coach makes a game plan around. Every coach is going to focus defense on McGee when they play WP.
You cannot “defend” or plan against the goalie
McGee played last night with stitches in his hand…sorry he did not meet your expectations
Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing. – Benjamin Franklin
Hmmm White Plains takes a penalty as Mcgee has a wide open net…Hope the Ref got an assist.
As for SOG do they count every shot? Or do they count them like the NHL? The NHL only counts shots the the goalie had to keep from going in the net. Shots off the post or wide are not counted as SOG
Easy with the negative stuff, how about stating that the rest of the team picked up their game and played well with McGee playing not up to full ability. It goes without saying that WP’s goalie is one of the best, I was pointing out specifically that the second line played extremely well and did what was necessary to keep WP’s in the game. Go easy, it is nice to see others on the team step it up, it was a fun game to watch. That second line will become the future of WP’s!
Santana, which post exactly are you commenting on? This one:
“Looks like there are some knowledgeable hockey fans who posted comments. I agree with poster who suggests only people at the game should post. Thank you.”
If yes, then I really don’t see your point. How do you comment on a game, without seeing the game? I never comment on games I have not seen or teams I have not seen ( sometimes discuss with friends who have to get their assessment) and believe I have gone out of my way to say that up front.
I cannot recall being exposed by anyone and trust me sometimes I blow humdingers out there that someone should call me out on. Please feel free to go back and cut and paste (hint: my BCS stuff was half true, half garbage)
I have never used another name to make a post. Trust me, there are times I see my name on posts that I wish I did not send.
I have never once said the BIA teams are better than So. Westchester teams because I don’t believe that. I have said that certain teams regardless of where they are from should be ranked higher and questioned the methodology used to come up with those rankings. You can go check that as well.
I believe that the post below which I commented on early this morning sums up everything I have been attempting to communicate for the last few months. The poster just said better and quieter then I could of ever said it and I hope people realize the beauty of it. Mike knows it did not come from me

the call you mention was clearly a crosscheck – 22 was engaged in a battle in front of the net…working hard…but then got caught cross-checking – no mystery – no outrage…just a cross check at an inopportune time
I was being sarcastic. After watching the video mamo v WP looked like good calls to me
wp first line was -2 wp second line was even not a giant differential wp first line came out to play in the third netting 2 goals but yes they were not sharp especially with mcgees injury…. Also its has already been said wp second line will be the future which is 100% true but don’t forget the second leading scorer behind mcgee is a sophomore on the first line
obviously any line with kevin mcgee is going to carry a team as young as white plains. the second line played well yesterday, although after scanning the box score it looks like each line accounted for 2 goals and a defensemen added the 5th. I’m not sure who gave up more, but from what “plus minus” said, it looks like the 1st line gave up 4 and the 2nd line gave up 2. not a great game from either line, however, if the 2nd line can continue to put pucks in the net and play like they did and the first lines play resembles what it did over the 1st 9 games, white plains will only be stronger. when you really only play 2 lines with a 3rd coming in for a breather once a period, you need both lines to produce and protect the net. white plains was outplayed last night, yet they were able to keep the score close and actually lead for much of the game. no team is going to win the section with just one line. you need two lines at least and the best teams will generally run 3. either way, its kind of stupid to argue which line is better, even if the point disparity wasn’t so great, you need both to be playing well to be a good team.
Last Word
I thought Rye had the better of the play most of the game. Rye was a little sloppy in a few situations – 1. Changing on the back check cost them a goal forwards must finish shifts on the offensive rush do not be selfish just get to the bench. 2. 3 goals by White Plains were because of defensive lapses, the weakside Defensemen have to be stick to stick in front of net, twice they scored from within 2 feet from the goal. Defensemen be aware head on a swivel?? Kudos to White Plains for getting into position and finishing. 3. Playing the puck on the 1/2 boards in your own end is so important, again Rye mis handled the puck and it cost them. Rye needs to clean their play in their own zone and they will be ok.
