I’ve not heard of any cancellations due to weather … yet.
Most of the marquee games are taking place upstate where life goes on regardless of the weather. Rye is putting a perfect record on the line against Queensbury, which is 3-4-1 against some tough competition. Mamaroneck is playing unbeaten Rome Free Academy, which has one of the best team websites in the state. New Rochelle is heading up to the Capitol District and will face Ithaca, which is off to a 6-1 start and will be heading down next month to play in the Suffern tournament and come back a week later to face Mamaroneck.
The best local game is Iona Prep and Fordham.
Keep us posted if you’re out watching, please, especially if you’re upstate with any of the road warriors. I’ll pass along the scores I get as the day progresses along with news of postponements. I’m working on some breaking news and can’t be out later and will be covering the Giants tomorrow. On that front, unless there’s a miracle, I won’t be jumping on and off airplanes for playoff games over the next month, so I’ll be doing more hockey than ever.
And don’t forget tomorrow’s hockey notebook, I’m writing about the increasing number of goalies with the ability to steal a game. I know 5-Hole is excited.

South Glens Falls 4, Pearl River 2
About last night … I know there’s a rivalry, but the game between Mahopac and Lakeland/Panas simply wasn’t enjoyable. There were 21 penalties, and the second period was a nightmare with too much nonsense after whistles. Most of the marquee players were playing the game, but too many role players were up to no good. I know both of these programs want to ranked among Section 1’s best teams, but they need to spend a little time on the other side of the glass watching Suffern and Pelham or Rye and Mamaroneck go at each other. That’s good hockey. I know this discussion inspires all kinds of finger pointing. Don’t blame the officials. Don’t blame the coaching. It comes down to the kids on the ice following the lead of their captains and respecting the game.

I m hearing Queensbury won 2-1? Can anyone confirm?
Rye lost 2-1 to Q’bury
whoa, Rye must have been missing key players. did the coach tweet that score?
We’re not at the game, all we have is the tweet from Peter Thomas:
”?@COACHPTHOMAS Unfortunately, Rye has left the ranks of the undefeated after a tough 2-1 loss to Queensbury. ”
Mike I respectfully disagree with your assessment of the game I think Mahopac played a very good first and dominated play with 11 shots on goal to 1. When LP resorted to thug tactics in the 2nd and 3rd period to try and change the flow of the game you ended with players from both teams sitting in the penality box – advantage Pac because LP’s entire team is 11 skaters.
11 shots to 1 in the 1st period
no matter how you dice it that is a brutal loss by Rye. You will hear q’bury is a good team, Rye had to travel upstate, they were missing players, doesn’t matter. I love Rye’s program and root for them but that is a horrible loss to a mediocre team. Few teams can go undefeated (willynorth, West Genny and Greece a couple years ago come to mind) but the ones that do are so mentally tough. We’ll see if this hurts or helps Rye down the road. I’m just shaking my head
Game was not too well played although Pac did dictate, they were tryin to make plays just missed on a few one timers and some solid saves by LP goaile kept it close. Off the opening faceoff 14 for LP collided with Pac Player at blueline and Pac player went off ice hurt then came back to score. The 2 female players on Pac can really skate well and take hits too. Goalie for LP can only do so much as he kept the game within reach until the third. Penalties have always hurt LP, in the past too especially versus Pac. This would be one sick playoff game if they met. Happy New Year Pacfan
Any games cancelled due to weather? Iona / Fordham?
@5hole – agree with your assessment of the game. Happy New Year to you and family.
Hey The Burg…. is there really a “brutal” loss at this time of year?
Only ones I know of are in the playoffs
Losing is never good. But giving up just 2 on the road to a ranked team is not a disaster. Weren’t going undefeated anyway. Let’s the kids and coaches think about offensive improvements on that long ride back. Need to be able to bury it in late February, not December. But need to have the defense first approach firmly entrenched thru out the season. Time to regroup and see if they can give WP their first loss at Ebersole this season.
You too Pacfan
So far you must give W plains goalie the #1 goalie to steal a game. He beat Suffern end of discussion. Suffern is the team to beat and he was in net to beat them not once, but twice…
Lp jfk game still on
Looks like only Jay, Scars and Greeley remain undefeated.
L/P vs. JFK has now been postponed.
Rome Free 5
Mamaroneck 4
Sounds like it was a good game. Rome is undefeated and ranked #2 in the state.
Solid weekend for MHS.
Calling the 2-1 rye loss brutal, is ridiculous. If they lost to one of the BIA house league teams…. THAT would be brutal!!!
N Rockland took it on the chin against Nisky 8-3. All in all a good trip for Raiders
New ro outshoots ithaca 2 to 1. New ro gives up 3 pp goals and loses 5-1
New ro lost 5-1. We will never know the real stats of this game. After all this is the same program who’s had 12 assists on 5 goals years ago.
Itaca is always good. Too bad Mamk could not pull out the win vs. Rome… Would’ve catapulted them in the rankings. Nice to see that they played them tough. Anyone know who scored? Shots on goal? If you need a hockey fix, Michigan is playing Michigan Tech on MSG.
Safe traveling to all the teams coming home from upstate. The roads can’t be ideal.
It’s a shame that our best teams are playing such exciting games upstate. Can’t Suffern or Mamk, Pelham put together a nice tournament down here with some upstate powers? I’m guessing those schools upstate don’t have a lot of disposable income so maybe it is tougher for them.
To be fair with regards to the Queensbury/Rye game, the Spartans have had a tough schedule so far. Let’s examine their 4 losses to date:
1: Skaneateles: #7 in NYS DII
2: Penfield: Unranked
3: Massena: #12 in NYS DI
4: Saratoga Springs: Unranked, but have only one loss so far this season, to Pittsford. Other games have been dominate performances by the Blue Streaks.
Plus a tie to Pelham, #5 in NYS DII.
I’m not saying that Rye should be disappointed that they lost to the Spartans, but it shouldn’t be treated as if the Spartans deserved to be blown out like Rye did to tournament host Glens Falls last night.
If anything, the loss may get the team to think about things they could improve to make themselves better when it comes to preparing for the state tournament come February.
A 2-1 loss isn’t brutal. It’s not like Rye lost 10-1. I haven’t seen a scoring summary, but I will assume the game was close throughout.
And the roads in upstate, especially Glens Falls, are brutal. Almost all are snow-covered, and it’s still flying out here. Estimated 3-5” after getting hit with 8-10” on Wednesday PM/Thursday.
Iona beat Fordham 3-2 and there was no pregame gavone Pizza Dinner this year.
Progress!!!
santana, what do you mean by 12 assists on 5 goals
Rye is greatly overrated and won’t make it to west point only three real contenders in section 1:Jay, Scarsdale, Suffern
@WMML-1230 Saratoga is #3 large school as of today behind Mcquaid and Niagara Wheatfield.
Many Section 1 and area players named to the EJEPL All-Star game. Congratulations boys and good luck. Way to represent!

Pelham vs. Ithaca (D1 #11)
Nice to see some teams come down.
Alright ETB Mom, I’ll bite. I was waiting for some follow up answers to your riddles and acronyms, but no dice. As for your response to Section Won, what do you call a shot that hits a stick and flies over the glass? And what does MEDEBO stand for? I looked it up and found nothing. I’m pretty sure than Anon just stands for anonymous, btw. See you at Friday’s game. What will you be wearing?
@section1supreme: surprised with your top 3 teams. No Pelham? I think that JJ will be emotionally Scarred and be Suffering after playing us. Maybe that’s what you meant?
@Noitall – Nice job putting the All-Star Roster on here, do you known who the section 1 players are?
@pelicanation to bad you dont even play jay
Bottom line is Lakeland/Panas ( 2 schools, 12 players, how stupid), take their cue from the coach. Always was and always will be a team of thugs who would rather fight than skate. They wont last the season with their stupid tactics. They got lucky once, wont happen again.
Yeah on the EJEPJ all star roster! Who cares! Way to cut n paste. Can you share any JV updates? Which child is yours? Why don’t u just come out and say who your little Joey is? This will make you feel better. Happy new year!!
Pacster…You are right on the mark…The head coach likes to brag that one of his sons was the “enforcer” on his junior team…Also was the same kid that started a fight in a sectional lax game against Yorktown in the last quarter with his team down by a dozen goals…Glad someone else finally said that about the LP coaches…Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe he is the reason why a school district as large as Lakeland with two high schools can only get 12 kids to come out and play hockey?
@section1supreme- I’m talking about the playoffs when you get the #1 seed and we have the #5 or even #8 according to your rankings. They do rank.
Pacster & Hockey maven, way off the mark here, talk about a coach and his kid not good. Lucky once if you are referring to the semifinal win in the jungle way off again, ranking 10th in state that year as well, Lucky? I think not. LP from what I am told has a modified team with some talented young players, why they are not on team now I am not sure, not my call. As far as coaching goes please do not insult 3 people my family and I respect a great deal, these are 2 fathers and a an older brother. If you continue to talk about them , you know who they are why don’t you address them personally face to face share your thoughts, explain yourself, what about that?. I just do not appreciate the comments you made regarding a coach his son and LP tactics. Also did you ever think the reason there are less players is $1200.00 a season, times are tough for some and maybe they just cannot afford the costs, food for thought.
Couple of Notes:
New Ro concerns me they out play most everyone but cannot play lock down defense. Maybe they change their strategy and put a forward high in offensive zone so they do not have odd man rushes. If they want to make section finals they must play better defense (BACKCHECK FORWARDS!)
Rye I agree with most of you bloggers yes they were a little overrated being #1 in state. Rye needs to get more of their weakside wingers to the net and bury the rebounds. Bottomline get a little tougher!! Scarsdale and Jay will give them problems if they score early.
Mamo will be back in business in January. They should get on a nice run and be in the mix for the section tittle.
Pelham I have no doubt they will play for the section title. The semi’s should be great if Scarsdale, Jay and Rye get there. Greely might mix that up as well should be a great finish to the season.
Last note to all you negative people on this blog get a grip this only high school hockey. Enjoy the play and encourage the team you root for there is no need to bash each other?? Let the games dictate the dialogue. I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year!!
@B sorry to offend you by giving props to some of our area players. Just because you or your Johnny isn’t on the list doesnt mean you have to bash it. And thanks, it was tough to cut and paste the article.
Is it true that the LP coach was suspended after the Mahopac / LP game , If so anyone no why or is it a bad rumor ?
New ro….... pad your points
Coach Mucci was given a game misconduct for abuse of official
and will not be behind the bench tonight
Lovedagame
I have heard that after the Mahopac game the lp coach was going crazy and the referees hit him with a penality that carries a one game suspension, not sure what call was. Players do take there lead from the coach.
Did the ref give LP Coach the quick hook? Or did he deserve it?
Always embarrassing to get tossed for the next game when someone loses their S.
I was surprised by the queensbury rye score We thought rye would win as we had a pretty tough pelham team up here in November who dominated queensbury but couldnt get the puck to go in. We expected Rye would have a little more skill since this years pelham team is so young with three seniors and they seem to be a working hard nose team. Rye might have been missing guys i assume. Q is young too and has trouble scoring goals. We expect to see one of those teams in regionals. If Rye plays Pelham before the post season that will be a game hto see to see. Both teams play intelligently with edge to harder iworking Pelham over slightly better skilled Rye. Pelham took their licks in Buffalo I see but thats all good for them that will prepare them. Rye has nice flow to their game.
I did not see the
LP coach going crazy but he probably should
of thought of choosing his words a bit more carefully.
My last word on LP vs Pac game . . . .
21 penalties is very high in any game, the players seemed to be wired up
which fuels the action, coaches do need to reel them in, I thought Pac did that better
than LP did. I also saw the officials gather the captains at center ice after the
second period and it seemed to be a one way conversation, so I am assuming
that both teams were aware that something was about to change.
I look forward to a playoff rematch that should be fun to watch. ..
Happy New Year to all
The interesting thing about the LP/Pac game was that Pac was dominating the first period, I think 11 shots to 1 with the Pac advantage. I am sure the LP coach told his players to go out and cause some chaos in the second and third period in an attempt to change the momentum of the game. The chaos did change the flow of the game, Mahopac did not have the complete domination in the second and third period, but they did not back down to the aggressive style of LP. The Mahopac coach seemed to be the cooler of the two coaches; the LP coach has a reputation for allowing the players to run a little wild when things are not going their way. In the end the LP strategy was effective in slowing down the barrage of shots on their team from going unanswered, but the strategy did not change the result of the game. You can not win games when you best players are taking penalities!
@noitall not offended and not bashing buddy, just stating facts..who’s UR little Joey? Come clean. 80% + of these kids do not even play in section 1..good try..be relavent. Stay thirsty my friend..
@B still sounds like sour grapes. Keep going to power skating. Maybe it will happen for you. As far as the area players in the league, most of them play for Apple Core, Hitmen and Ct. Oilers. Some live in the area but play for Bosco and some play in a bordering section.
Don’t be a hater. Does the “B” stand for B***h?? Happy New Year, don’t drink and drive.
B.
Do you love hockey, or just some hockey? The “Joeys” of Section 1 are Modica, Kechabaw, McCloy and Tiso. Congats to them all.
Who is this B?
@noitall great comeback! It’s obvious, you know nothing.. Your a very sensitive ole man.. Starting to feel sorry for your inability to process anything. Not a hater. NEVER drink and Drive. Good luck flipping burgers and and being dumb in 2013!
@ B. thanks for the info n yes, I love hockey.
I have to agree with noitall, I don’t see a big deal in what he did, he didn’t even pick kids from section 1 only, he just cut and pasted the full rosters of both teams and didn’t single out any group of kids or one kid, there are alot of kids on there from Applecore, Oilers and Hitmen thats something we should be proud of!!
B sounds like like he must either be a coach or a parent of a non section 1
Check your grammer B, your ignorance is really shining through. And when you come to my drive-through window, I will try to get your super sized order correct.
@Puck Daddy and PelhamFan, thanks and have a great New Years and remaining season.
