Trey Herlitz-Ferguson (Mamaroneck): The senior forward scored the game-winning goal with 3:31 left in overtime Friday against Bethlehem in the Shaker/Colonie Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament at the Albany County Hockey Facility and was named player of the game. He also had one assist in the 7-5 win and was named tournament MVP.

Herlitz-ferguson definatly deserved this but I think Kevin Hill may have edged him out
Biased much.? Trey played two great games in an upstate tpurney. Hill played one non league game and against a mediocre Iona team.
Iona is a pretty good team
Iona is a good team. It just showed how suffern can be this year. I said Trey did deserve it but I think Hill deserved it just as much. Yes biased
How sad our society has become.. Player of the week is great.. But do we need to mention 9 other players???!!! Honor roll, Really, 9!! God forbid my little joey isnt mentioned.. Sad!!
Good job Trey!! Sounds like you deserve to be player of the week, keep playing hard!. The rest of you, aaahhh forget it..
Chief Justice Earl Warren: “I always turn to the sports section first. The sports section records people’s accomplishments; the front page nothing but man’s failures.”
Cheer up Postman. Somebody might mistake you for a hockey humbug in this holiday season. Its great that these kids who may have distinguished themselves after so much hard work get some recognition.
Some of us appreciate young peoples accomplishments.
And good luck to your Little Joey.
Congratulation TH-F! Keep it up!
Way to show some Bipartisanship postman! I am sure we will be seeing some Suffern guys up there as the weeks go by…
Anyone know if K.Hill is related to J.Hill from a couple of years ago?
Little brother
Ta-Da-
Yes, he is.
It is a shame that the above list only recognizes offensive players when you have a player like Tommy Kirincic from Mahopac who excels on defense and he scores goals and gets many assists. Without a good goalie and great defense many of these teams would not have won this weekend. I am throwing some recognition at Tommy Kirincic for a job well done. Defense matters.
Pacfan
That’s why I’m having coaches nominate players, so that strong performances that do not show up in the box score can be recognized. I have a feeling Tommy will get some ink along the way. He’s too good to stay under the radar.
Nice to see Matt Lipsky of Iona viewed by his coach for the honor roll.
Matt squares to every shooter ready’s himself for every shot has great technical skills and should have been the varsity starting goaltender from his freshman year.
Geez. Are u really complaining that your son wasn’t the starting goalie for 4 years at Iona? Get lost. 7 goals vs a good opponent does not enhance your argument.
i know trey did a great job and honor was well deserved. have to say that andrew schauer with 6 points, even strength goal, power play goal, 2 shorthanded goals 2 assists also had a great weekend upstate against 2 teams with a history of strong hockey. he is a talented player who will be heard from many times this season.
Postman, how dare you. You angry scrooge. My little Joey is one of those Joeys. Or should I call him little Biff? I agree about getting the defense on here and also agree with Mike that the best way for that to happen, unless Mike is at the game and observes for himself, is for the coach to do it. Not all coaches will take the time to do that so Mike has to step up in those cases. and Stripes, Postman doesn’t have a little Joey playing anymore.
@Off the Post
I am not related to Lipsky nor have I even ever spoken to the kid. I have been in Rinks when he has been between the pipes.
Its easy to spot a kid who is trained technically vs flopping around the net which at this level is the norm.
So I guess you assume that in order to say something nice about a kid that is being Recognized for a good job could only be a parent of that kid.
You want to win Hockey games you play your best players end of story.
Yes. I’m sure the old Iona coaches were trying to lose. Ridiculous. If he let up 7 as a senior he would have let up 12 as a freshman.
Btw. Maybe in the catholic schools the goaltending is weak. But section one has a lot of fundamentally sound goalies. Hayek was not fundamentally sound but was one of the best.
isn’t lipsky a junior
@ Off the Post: Sorry but you’ve got the wrong guy. I’m not “Not South of the Canadian Border,” and neither is Mrs. Lip. In the 6 years we’ve had kids playing high school hockey, we’ve never used this blog in an effort to promote any of our children, nor do we intend to start now. Our children’s position on a team and any accolades they may (or may not) receive, will be earned through the effort they put into the sport and their on ice performance (or lack thereof) and not through any self-promotion by us on this blog or anywhere else.
We’ve also never used this blog as a forum to post critical comments of any players, be it a teammate or an opponent. These are high school kids playing for the love of the game and to represent their schools. So when speaking about a particular player, if something positive can’t be posted, it probably shouldn’t be posted at all. With that being said, congratulations to Trey Herlitz-Ferguson and all the other players mentioned in Mike’s post.
Also, Herlitz-Ferguson was named tournament MVP.
Ted Bellis deserves notice as he also had a hat trick in the championship game – and was involved in the prettiest goal of the tournament. The puck was deep in Mamaroneck’s zone and either Herlitz-Ferguson or Peter Conley got behind all the opposing skaters unnoticed, at about the middle of the red line, with his hand in the air, waving for the puck (but not saying anything). The puck was air-mailed to that player who caught it, turned 180 degrees, dropped it to his stick, and handled the puck off both sides of his stick while skating (not at full speed but, rather, timing this…) toward the right side of the goal, taking the goalie with him, hard rightpost. Bellis came down, trailing in on the left side of the goal, and as the puck carrier skated past rightpost he backhanded the puck to Bellis when Bellis was about 8 feet out, coming in on the far post. Bellis sends the puck home left side – with the goalie still right. Ohhh, nice – just a beautiful play, involving at least three players, from where it started down by Mamaroneck’s goal…
Congratulations, Mamaroneck. For the championship game story go to http://www.spotlightnews.com/news/2012/nov/26/hockey-cba-cant-tame-mamaroneck-tigers/
Mr.Lip miss our days with the boys and the Vipers, say hi to your boys. Your both boys are so talented and so respectful and just a pleasure to play on the same team with and watch as well. Good luck to Matt as he is deserving of all the press he worked hard for. Goaltending is as you know a tough position and he plays it so well. Your post represents the quality person you are a true pleasure to know you and your family, just a great bunch. Wish you all the best.
Regards to you family
Be well
Nick C and family
This why you can’t always go by last year’s stats to predict this year’s results. According to Cliff’s website, this Mamo fwd had no points last year.
oops. I got him mixed up with what looks like a relative on the team. Still, this guy had just 14 points last year and 5 already this year against good competiton. That’s a nice breakout senior year.
FOTG,
You are right, last year there were several juniors who had very disappointing years, yet somehow the team was able to have a nice season. This year as seniors they seem to be hitting their potential.
I’m thinking Mamk scores 7 vs. Mahopac and wins 7-3 Friday Night. I’ll be there.
Pac had another player who had a great tournament with 7 goals and 3 assist his name is John Hangach
I think Pac beat Yorktown 9-7 I know that is a rivalry, not to knock Yorktown but if they scored 7 Mamaroneck can score more, question is how many can Pac muster up? I say this game is a shootout alot of odd man rushes and goaltenders will be the difference.
Edge to Mamk 9-7 This should be a great game. I would like to see Pac win it
Pac was running all its lines and played two goalies, I don’t think this will be the norm, I think Pac is fine tuning its line. I would not expect to see them give this amount of goals up on Friday. The following day Pac played Brewster and shut down the their two offensive players and only allowed 2 goals.
Thanks Biff
I supposed Little Joey was rhetorical.
So good luck to Little Biffy, if there is one.
@5 Hole: Thanks Nick, hope to see you at a rink soon.
Oh boy a game or 2 into the season and people are worried about who is and isnt on the player of the week list ,going to be a long season.
As far as Suffern and Iona,Suffern has pounded them just about everytime they have played them over the past 5 yrs or so,no matter who was in goal.
One player with 13 goals and no assist? Is that really a good stat for the TEAM?
