Here are the other award winners picked by the Section 1 coaches last night. For those asking how the All-League process works … a league title comes with five all-league slots, second place gets you gets you three picks, and so on down the line. You have to be All-League to be considered for All-Section. The actual selections are up to individual coaches, and they do have differing philosophies. Most look to honor the upperclassmen first. A few spotlight the kids based solely on skill, and some go off the stats.
The all-league picks are up on Section1Hockey.com, click here to visit.
I’m going to start a new tradition when I name the Section 1 program of the year. My pick will go up on the blog tomorrow.

I get that coaches want to spread the love around but last time I checked, Suffern did not lose to a Section 1 team this year. Dont understand how anyone besides the Suffern coach gets coach of the year. The Rye Town Harrison coach may be a great coach and he may have done an awesome job this year, but the fact remains that you cant do much more then Suffern. Undefeated in the section and section champs. Just not sure how that happens.
Congrats to all the kids for winning awards and all the coaches for doing a great job with the kids
SChelling would get it every year if they did it objectively. But it is a nice honor for coaches, I don’t think it means that much to Schelling this year. He’s got his eye on the prize and if he wins a state championship, we know he is the coach of the year. Same applies to Witz.
The coach of the year award goes to the coach who is recognized not just for the win / loss record but for how much they have done with their team. It’s not about who has the best team, the most talent or the most wins. Sometimes the award goes to a coach who has improved his team the most, overcome more odds and earned the respect of the other coaches due to that. Suffern and Pelham have fantastic coaches. The coaches in this area are some of the best and most dedicated staffs there are. Coach Forzaglia did a great job with his team and was honored as such. Great job by all the players and coaches and staff in the section.
I thought RTH had co-coaches? did Forzaglia take it on his Own this year.
Upper Left you explained coach of the year perfectly. RTH did well this year somewhat unexpectedly.
They do spread out the award. Extremely rate for a coach to win OT twice in a row.
I can’t wait for the ‘Bigby’ award to come out. That’s something the kids are really waiting for. As with any awards it’s more of a popularity contest than anything else.
Blogger of the year????
It’s doubtful that RTH won the award due to “spreading it out”. More likely a nod of respect to Forzaglia for a fine coaching and getting the most out of his players. It’s a coaching award and goes to how well the team played, improved and it’s overall success. From the results, it seems rather well deserved for him.
What is rather nice (so far) is the lack of negative comments regarding the players selected. They each have a story of their success and each honor is terrific.
Blogger of the year..???? HHMMM.. going to give this some thought, may even go back and review older posts..
As long as we are giving out awards. Let’s give one to Mike. He has changed the way hockey is covered in our area. The blog is populated, twitter feeds, more photography, more coverage. A few years ago, hockey fought to get any coverage. Now, bloggers fight over which teams get covered “more”. Mike has given a “face” to the cover and has brought the same professionalism that has him covering the super bowl to Section 1 hockey.
I’ll be a stick in the mud.
In Rockland, hockey and many other high school sports teams receive much less coverage than in years past from the JN.
Not Mikes fault. One guy for a very large section.
But I remember not so long ago the JN had it’s own Rockland based sports writers, and you could anticipate a full game story for most teams during their season for all sports, regardless of record.
That said, new economy and newspaper economic realities. I still pay my $21 per month to the JN, so yeah I can say this…..
Blogger of the year: Bigby…what you get when you combine an adults love for a childrens sport(not that theres anything wrong with that) with unlimited internet time in moms basement.
Most improved blogger: Al Bundy…. spelling and grammar mistakes limited this year.
Rookie of the year: Mrs Bigby….oldest rookie ever, finally believes Ned regarding his wrist and finger issues being a result of his typing.
MVP Cliff C formerly Lohud….... Even though he still cant even walk on the ice without falling, he devotes time, effort, and energy to this community
Al, you make a valid point; however, to counter the reduced coverage that all papers are giving sports and well everything.. Mike, made up for the reduced coverage by increasing the coverage online. He actually grew the coverage. The $21 per month to JN allows it to keep operating and allows for their reporters like Mike to also run the online functionality. Don’t look at them as separate elements. They are combined. Look at the overall coverage that is now provided to hockey. Live blogging and twitter feeds from games, video interviews, constant updates and forum to enjoy and express opinions.
A shout out to Clarkstown S… Most efficient blogger…doesn’t post much anymore, but when he does it’s real good stuff…
Got it UL, but large number of high school teams play their seasons in silence in Rockland. At my job I get the Staten Island Advance and my partner lives there, and the game coverage for each of the ten or so high schools is very comprehensive. Not that I expect anyone to refer to the Advance, except chshl guy for his hockey news, but it is not a favorable comparison.
How does Solnick get the Doc Rasbeck award for conference 1B?
His class schedule is a joke.
He has only like 2 AP courses and I hear he racks up extra points on the easy quizzes.
I don’t care if he’s going to be a PhD in 5 years and a Peace Corps volunteer…does he make other kids around him smarter?
puh-leeze
He goes to power skating at sportorama
regardless of who is recognized as Blogger of The Year, it should go to Mike as the first recipient of this distinguished award for all he has done. All in favor…...? If not Mike then my vote goes to Old School Mountie for his no nonsense, fair and balanced blogging.
Long Island Duck – I’m a Ned Bigby fan all the way but thank you for the kind words.
Ned,
I should definitely get that award. I think I make other bloggers feel smerter.
For the 100th time this season…
BRING BACK THE POWER LEAGUES
this setup creates zero interest and alot of lousy games squeezed into a 20 game schedule
Can I nominate 5 hole for the single white female award. He’s been both obsessed and consumed with me ever since I called mahopac the Walmart of westchester.
Clarkstown s-
That was one fall, 2 years ago!! And before that, I hadn’t fallen on the ice in about 26 years. So I think my percentages are still pretty high. Although I stopped sprinting across the ice in sneakers after that fall, so I guess I could be seen as padding my stats.
Bigby sounds bitter. Not like you. Sort of changes my impression.
Rocket-
You CAN, however there’s a flaw with that. Although I’ve never met 5 hole in person, I’m pretty sure I’m not going too far out on a limb to say Jennifer Jason Leigh is WAY better looking than him.
Well…we have all just hijacked a post that was about honoring the players and teams, and made it about us bloggers..
Not fair….let’s move down 2 posts to the CHSHL championship blog and talk about ourselves there.
LOL… that was funny Al!!!
Cmon Al,
We all know that high school hockey could NEVER continue without us all important bloggers.
I nominate Turning Chapanese for the one hit wonder award. He continues to both inspire and educate us in Chapanese once per year. He’s like Santa clause.
How can you have 9 forwards, only 4 defense and 4 goalies?
Shouldn’t it have been 9,6,2?
John Chapman, captain of the 92 Suffern team can speak Chapanese
No Borofsky? Not even honorable mention?
Thats a week comment ?. Obviously if hes not on the list he didnt make it. Why bring the kids name up and make him feel bad, or point out he did not get selected. Thats week.
Its obvious that it was not done by position. I dont know why everyone keeps asking that.
Good to see a Mamaroneck Alum as Coach of the Year, Congrats Steve!
...Great post AL!
@All Section
because it is the all section TEAM…so it should resemble a traditional TEAM
two goalies
six D
nine forwards
Hey Folks… how about this one. The Section 10 Division One Coach of the Year wasn’t there for the Championship game. Yep, the Islanders coach apparently had a “prior commitment” with USA Hockey. His three assistants handled the game. Meanwhile, Massena was undefeated in the Section and even beat Suffern this year (sorry, I had to mention it) Massena’s coach, who only has a part-time volunteer assistant has to work around his work shedule as a State Trooper. He should have gotten the award in my opinion… the team overachieved this season no matter how they finish in the states. One coach was hear muttering before the final – “if we had known this…”
Is it possible that ETB could be finished as a hockey entity?
First of all…congrats to them for putting together a nice run, and for a successful season. Kudos to the kids for post-season awards…
And you can’t deny their bloggability.
But…(and this is a very big giant smelly “but”)
according to http://www.section1hockey.com/rosters-etb.html
they show 16 seniors on the roster
let’s face it…according to what we have read here, they did not distinguish themselves in the most sporting light against Suffern. And now, 3 different high schools are stained with the “reputation”.
I don’t know who did what at West Point and who goes to which high school, but will all 3 schools’ athletic departments and school boards continue to contribute serious money into a hockey program with dwindling numbers and a bad rep?
could a broken door and no more hockey team be their legacy?

Ned,
Regardless of what happened at West Point , ETB hockey is not stained. If not for the blog post, most people wouldn’t even know. It’s unfortunate and it leaves a mark on that game but should not be a reflection of a team that became as sum better than its parts. The blog frequency may drop and Mike will have to figure out how to replace their “traffic”. But to down play a team and all of the others on the team is not entirely correct either. Mergers are always in peril and I am sure the ETB coach knows that every year.
Upper Left.
Good posts out of you lately. You seem way too educated for this forum.
Not trying to downplay anything…just posing a question.
How about the most disappointing team in the section? Or the biggest choke artists? Who would you nominate?
Crazy Eddie,
Your name is perfect for your post. Why would we focus on so much negative when the blog is trying to celebrate the season and not come down on kids or teams.
Ned,
Nice compliment. Thank you. Since I am on here posting, you may have your proof that I am not too educated for the forum. I’m actually a fan of the blog and of hockey. I think that what has Mike has done in a short time frame with hockey is commendable. I merely popped onto the blog to support the “traffic” numbers and show my appreciation. Nothing more.
First, let me congratulate Suffern for a great win on Sunday. You guys deserved it and there is (not that there ever was) no doubt who the cream of the crop is in sections.
Second, folks, although these young men are responsible for their actions, please don’t let the “brain freeze” we saw diminish the talent of those two young men. The program and schools of both were and are embarrassed and I’m sure it will be handled. I don’t think the program is stained or has a reputation now. Next year is a new year and we as a team have other fish to fry. I do believe these two young men are themselves a little embarrassed and feel bad for what they did.
Third, I do not think the program is in trouble, but we may be in for hard times as we await the next core to arrive. So, I echo Upper Left that ETB blog activity will be cut a bit. That may come to the delight of many bloggers anyway!
Fourth, best wishes and much success to all of our seniors (2,5,6,8,9,10,12,14,16,19,23,27,33,44) it was great to be around you and watch the program grow with you. You will be missed. Yes, 20 as well. I bashed you kid, probably not fairly. You showed class and left it on the ice on Sunday, When I see an opposing coach hug one of our players, that tells me this kid is respected and one heck of a player. We will miss you.
All seniors in sections, all the best. Congratulations to Redgate and Reilly, well deserved awards. Great job from Palfrey on all sections.
A little stick noise, please, for EBPop. That’s how you comment on a blog, folks!
Congrats to Collin, well deserved award for Player of the Year. Bring home the title.
Good award choices. I know the POY award usually goes to a forward, but I think in this case Landis and Reilly could have easily split the award. Landis was the best defensemen I watched all season. Congratulations, tremendous season from both of those players, especially Reilly coming back off injury. Both should be locks to be back on the All-State team. Not done yet, still Utica work to be done.
Sorry mike, but no noise is coming from my stick.
EBPop tried to spread out blame to Sanchez. To me Sanchez may yippy yap sometimes, but it’s within the framework of the game. I place no blame on him for the outburst. Nor do I blame him for breaking a door at our nations most famous military school. I don’t blame any coaches or any etb players. There was only one young man who completely lost it. It’s unfortunate. But that’s fact.
Obviously the coaches agree since Sanchez made all section the other young man did not.
PS I can’t believe I’m going to bat for suffern so much lately. Am I slowly being brainwashed into McLovin the team in blue?
Congratulations to all the players on all the teams in each league that won awards. The fact that they were recognized by ALL the coaches in their respective league truly makes it a super accomplishment. Best of luck to all in their future hockey endevors.
Pelham stands virtually no chance when they get to Utica and play Kenmore East, granted KE still has to beat Notre Dame/Batavia, this team is ridiculous. Saw them play earlier this year and they look like a Junior team out there, would easily be able to beat Suffern. Either way, best of luck
Yes, Kenmore is very good. Nothing new for Pelham. The year they lost to New Hartford that team was thr best in both divisions and before that Clinton who beat Pelham beat all or most of the top state powers they played that year. Pelham will battle like they always do
Fuel,
Are you drinking when you read? Seriously, where did I even mention that kid you spoke about? Where did I even suggest he had anything to do with it?? I just read six times what I wrote and nothing suggests that nothing. I didn’t even know that was his name. In matter of fact he had a great game.
Your problem is and let me be frank here, you for whatever reason dispise our program, kids, bloggers, that you just make things up! Thats is why no one will ever take you seriously. I seldom mention kids names. Numbers yes, which is probably more polite. Read what I wrote and prove me wrong.
This is the first post I have made since the end of the season, so don’t use I said this crap either routine.
You’re wrong and have no idea what you are talking about.
As usual.
You implied kids in both programs embarrassed themselves. No?
@ EBPOP.
After reading your post, I figured you meant one kid from Suffern and one kid from ETB and both are to blame as well. If it were not Sanchez who you kinda said embarassed the program… who are you talking about?
“Second, folks, although these young men are responsible for their actions, please don?t let the ?brain freeze? we saw diminish the talent of those two young men. The program and schools of both were and are embarrassed and I?m sure it will be handled.”-EBPOP
I only dislike the parents who entitle their sons to any behavior.
I don’t dislike any program. Or any player he made a big mistake that im sure he regrets he has a whole life to learn from it I like what etb did. But I feel like some ate trying to create a smokescreen as to the facts.
Right, those two young men were from ETB. No one else on the ice on Sunday had meltdowns. Those schools are Eastchester, Bronxville, and Tuckahoe. I still don’t know what the Sanchez did. So, as you can see ( I feel like a lawyer) I did not mean anyone from Suffern.
So no, smoke screens Fuel. I was embarrassed for our schools. Like I said, I’m sure the two players were as well. (from ETB). Hell, I apologized for some of my actions.
See you guys next year.
All the best.
All apologies then. I thought you were referring to an etb kid and a suffern kid.
Great post eb pop
Sorry for all of the confusion guys/gals. No worries Fuel…all love here!
Speaking of which, can anyone explain to me why our #20 didn’t get all league or even a honorable mention? Now that I apologized for how I treated the kid, I need answers!!
Do u thinks it was beacuse he played in only 13/14 games? If so, he should have gotten an honorable mention at least. Look at his numbers. Plus add to that the double teaming, the pressure we all put him under, etc.
Don’t understand.
Wow, what a reversal.
Can anybody elaborate on what exactly happened during the ETB Suffern game? Obviously upon reading it looks ilk emotions got to the best of a few guys. If you ever played a competitive high school sport and made it this far you’d understand.
How can a player who missed a third of the season because he was suspended from school make all section?!??
Great going guys
Yes. Anybody can lose it. But I think the straw that broke the camels back was the destruction of property at west point.
West point is a place where you show great respect and reverence for many reasons. It should be a privelage to be there. They do section one a great favor for allowing us to be there.
It sure is weird to see Rocket Fuel turning Mountie blue. The “Suffern Hockey” sweatshirt is on me if you’ll wear it RF, on one condition…you have to let Mike put a picture of you wearing it up on the blog.
Rocket-
This is the biggest switching of sides since Darth Vader threw the Emperor over that ledge while the lightning bolts were flying everywhere.
Old school. Normally if it’s for free, its for me. But I can’t quite do that yet. I’d have to wear my clarke kent glasses to protect my identity. Still wear the orange and black There is a big part of me that does want to see them win it. They seem like a real solid bunch of young men.
Not switching sides cliff. Just throwing my support towards the candidate that is not my own. Like when I support Ralph Nader , until he gets knocked out then I support someone who’s still in it.
Section 1 has been banging on that championship door for years now. I think this year is finally the year to get one since 1992. Maybe 2.
you guys seriously need to man up. Its hockey… well high school hockey but still they share some similar qualities i suppose. The suffern etb game was extremely tame and void of much hitting or cheap play. I did not see anything wrong with the game. 1 player got kicked out… so what. he was angry with the referees and for good cause. 1st goal for ETB shouldve counted. yep he was in the crease but when was the last time you saw that called… 2nd goal for suffern was caused because a referee could not get out of the way… and the worst offense by far that i have ever seen in a hockey game by a referee was on mcleans in the crease call. After watching the replay on msg varsity, mclean skated through the crease for a nano second and the play was called dead and brought out of the zone. WHAT A JOKE. seriously thats pathetic. High school hockey is a joke but come on this is too much. I was expecting a line brawl or some more hitting. ETB was very tame in fact. I support the two players for showing some emotion at least. Most of the ETB team looked out of it and nonchalant.
Is the fact Sherding isn’t on the all section team. Seems his coach didn’t put up the fight need to get his player the nod he deserved. Yeah he may have lost it in the last game but he went out with heart. Mean while his efforts aren’t reciprocated by his coach
The fact that only four D were selected and one who really is a forward is insult enough to other Dmen who deserved to be on the list but for a coach not to grab his sack and speak up for a player who left it all out there all season long is a slap in every players face.
ETB isn’t the only guilty party here.
“Yeah he may have lost it in the last game but he went out with heart.”-Whats really a joke.
I nominate this for the most insane statement of the season.
So that means that every other player who did n t act out has no heart. That he acted out means he cares more than everyone else. Good thing all the ETB did nt have “heart” if they had “heart” and cared as much there would have been a riot on the ice. Glad ETB kids don t care as much
Had a good night last night watched Mahopac at the Westchester County Center win their Semi final “AA” B-Ball game and now we must face the Suffern of B-ball, we will be playing Mount Vernon, – not bad for a bunch of kid from the Farms and who shop at Walmart (lol).
