Here’s the list of 17 players who made All-Section this season. They were chosen by a room filled with excitable hockey coaches in a spirited process. Again, don’t slam any of the chosen few. They are all deserving choices. It’s fine dropping the names of those you feel were overlooked.

Very disappointed to not see Frankie Sherding(ETB) as a defensive All-Section selection. Did the “West Point Meltdown” factor into this decision ? And why are only 4 Defensemen chosen and yet 4 Goalies are selected ? Very confused over this—Sherding was one of the top defensemen in Section 1 all season long. Help me out here 5 Hole !
I assume only Div 1 coaches can vote for Div 1 players..same with Div II. Out of 11 schools represented 4 are Div 1 and 7 Div II. No Mamaroneck and 1 from Rye…wow, times have changed
For All-Section, coaches vote for the 17 best players regardless of position…Sherding was definitely one of the best 17…but his actions at West Point, sadly, took him out of the running.
WHAT A JOKE! Sherding not making the section team, the coaches should be ashamed of themselves for not voting for him. The list should of started with him at the top.
Simply BIZZARE – 4 D’Men???
Talk about sending the wrong message…
Talk about total emphasis on points and not team play…
Also, a couple of these names are ridiculous…pure politics at work
You vote for my kid and I will vote for yours BUT you asked that we not name names so I will abide by that…the vast majority of these kids are very, very deserving
Politics? too bad. Its always “politics” when people/parents dont get their way. Pretty bad of you to put all the coaches as all being “politcal” people just because you do not agree with the selections. and for for HS Hky Fan are you a coach? Are you a league ref? What makes you think you know who should be on that team? Have you seen every team play? Are you a talent evaluator? I would think that the coaches who see all the players and know the game should select the All Section Team, oh wait, they did
Joke, the kids meltdown the other night didn’t help him. It’s ashame because he is a good player.
Congrats to all of the guys that received these awards.
There are only 3 Defensive Players on this list. Chris Alexander of Pearl River is a Forward, He played forward all
@sure its always politics
get a grip…did u even read my post
my compaint was about having 4 D (really 3) but FOUR goalies and NINE forwards
so the implication is that hard working Defensemen, who don’t score alot, are almost irrelevant. And yes 2 of those names are simply politics…i won’t name names but when the kids get on tonite they will name both names
@joke
Maybe if he did not have a complete meltdown during the championship, and breaking a door, he would have got the nod. I don’t blame his coach if he didnt push for him. I don’t think any coaches would push for him either. All things being close… character counts.
Maybe this is a “teachable moment” for him and for all future section one players.
Please save your breath (or your fingers) if you are going to reply that he was showing “passion” and it was a simple “mistake”.
Gotta see sherding up here, regardless of what happened at West Point. He is easily one of the top 3 defenseman in the league.
hey HS hky fan
they said they pick the top 17 players regardless of position. The defense that were picked are four of the best. Get a grip? I do have a grip, I do not question people who are dedicated and work hard with the kids and do their best. I dont try to find fault and conspiracy
I don’t think this is based much on stats. Especially on the goaltending and defenseman side. I by no way mean that these kids don’t deserve a spot on the All League team but realistically, if this is stat based- Wolfe should be no where near this list. It is heavily based on west point, and I agree about the ETB defenseman Sherding missing, interesting list here…
Sherding did not make this list for his actions at west point?
wow
the last time i checked it was about voting the 17 BEST players based on there play not there actions
what a shame
I guess you are not savvy enough to understand that sportsmanship plays a huge role in the high school sports game. If the “actions” embarrassed high school athletes I am sure they know what they are doing. Its unfortunate because he is a wonderful player but everyone has to be responsible for his actions. Despite what you believe the powers at be felt it was a serious offense, I think most observers would view it that way too. The permissive thoughts these days are not for the better of our society. Sportsmanship counts. You cannot go and disrespect the game players and referees without some sort of a response.
I don’t understand how you can pick an all-star team of 17 (which is a typical hockey configuration) and not pick by the traditional 9,6,2 set up. That’s the game, it’s like minimizing the role of the Offensive Tackle or over stating the role of the Punter or Kicker.
Then to ad insult to injury they tap a kid who doesn’t play Defence.
Is this a sport of Hockey people or Gym Teachers picking up an extra pay check.
“I;m good, I read the manual, I can coach”-This kind of stuff would never happen with traditional American bat and ball sports.
@sure its politics
Dear Coach Thin Skin
You should not be working with teenagers if my comments hurt your self image that much.
@Dude
You made my point alot better than I did
Not really sure about not having Sherding on the list. Firstly, he has the most defensive points in the whole section. And secondly, remembering back to the comments on “ETB’s weak defense”, Mike said himself that both McNamara and Sherding were definitely above Landis. These are just facts, so perhaps there’s a tab of bias for the All-Section team, but who really knows…
@RocketFuel
I can with no doubt in mind say that, “All things being close…” is a complete overstatement. Asides from Scholer, neither of the other DEFENSEMEN here come even close to the abilities of the real top d-men in the section, Sherding definitely being one of them. It’s nothing against the other players, they are strong high school hockey players, but neither didn’t provide the game with anything extra in my opinion. In effect, even if does “character counts”, it doesn’t keep Sherding out of the best-of-the-best group.
@fan011 – you’re right, they aren’t based on stats alone and thankfully, never have been/should not be. Saying Wolfe should not be ‘nowhere near the list because of stats’ is not fair, not valid, belittles his accomplishments and is a cheap shot. He absolutely deserves to be on the list. He is a top goalie, athlete and from what i heard a great locker room and on-ice leader. He was a very big part of the Scarsdale gel and story this season, including the game 1 win against Mamaroneck and the back-end run. I think this is a time to toast those on the list, and/or put in a good word for those who people thought had a good shot at it. Tearing down just seems, small.
@Hs Hky Fan
just wondering… i know we shouldnt name names but which kids did you have in mind who made it straight on politics
I have been reading these comments since the night of the game. I can not believe how hockey fans think this is one of the worst displays of sportsmanship they have seen. You obviously have not been to many hockey games. He did not jump on any players back or punch a player. Yes he ran his mouth but no one other than players on the ice will know what was being said. Yes he should have stayed in control but it is only due to the high profile of the game that it looks worst. To take him out of consideration for all section and any other possible award is nonsense. Just look at his last 4 years and judge for yourself.
The list should start with sherding period. I know some kids made the list because of weak schedules and their coaches allowing them to pad their stats. But in a draft sherding would be a top 5 pick. stop drinking the ice hutch kool aid and be fair to the kid
Not knowing what happened at WP, I will say this, there is a certain amount of trash talk that goes on in most every competetive sport. Like it or not it is the society we live in. A player HAS to know how let it roll off their back or counter it in some way that doesn’t end up making him or his team look bad. Yes, I have heard that there is a prominent player on Suffern that enjoys baiting the opposition. But guess what – who cares? You have to figure a way to deal with it on move on
Every action that begets a reaction can have consequences. Some kids learn this the hard way.
The only criticism I think is valid when evaluating who should make a subjective list like all-section is did they actually play? Is there some type of minimum game requirement for the players to be considered? If not, there should be. Especially if kids miss games because or suspension or because of travel. Committment to the team should count for something – right?
Wolfe belongs, he did a nice job with a young team with a short bench. They beat all the d 2 teams except Pelham who is the two time champ and a superior team. Wolfe should get the recognition. I want to gently nudge a post above. I think HsHky Fan is way off base, sorry to say, I know we are all entitled to our opinions and I respectfully disagree with your charge of politics. There are just too many teams and coaches involved and so many different groups. We have the southern Westchester teams we have the teams that play in Brewster, we have the rockland fellows there just too much to conspire. I think its a situation where the teams that win get more recognition and rightfully so in my opinion. Just my two cents
kool aid?
Andrew Schauer of Pelham deserves to be on that list for forwards i know he is a sophomore and theres only one other sophomore but he should be there
Actions have repercussions. Sometime painful ones. Sometimes ones that although it’s a tough swallow and even hurts to see a kid go through it, none the less sometimes there is a price to be paid for ones actions. I don’t know if that’s the case here. Only those voting would know. But some extremely talented players also did not make the list. It does not mean that there was a conspiracy nor coaches that were not knowing. It meant that the coaches put up the players they thought best, discussed and voted. Try and give these kids the credit they deserve and the people who have dedicated themselves to the sport the respect that has been earned.
Clearly there are always going to be subjective arguments for both kids who are on, and who are left off the post season lists. The coaches have a tough job picking in any case. I for one, think that coaches should only be limited to voting for teams/players that they have played against. Please tell me if i am wrong, but as currently constituted, coaches could conceivably be voting for players that they have not even seen on the ice? If this is true, it needs to be addressed.
Sorry, White Plains goalie over Yorktown goalie. Period.
Sherding should be on list. Period.
Dumb system.
@?? (from last night)
see comment from Bar Down
-a purely political pick
Pelham, Shauer had a great year, but if anybody else from Pelham deserves to be on the All-Section team its Danny Shea. He is the unsung hero of that team with the way he hustles and plays in both zones and generally all over the ice. While he did grow physically and improve on his skills of over the last year or so, he is still not as physically gifted as Reilly or Landis, who are both well deserved All-State players, but Ive watched him play against my son for years, not just in the winter but spring and fall as well, and believe that he is the spark that makes that team go. His awareness mixed with dirty work on the ice free up his linemates to do what they do best. Also, McGiness and Lamdin, who was recognized on the All-Section team, are also in that same group. Cant win anything without players like them, and it seems as though Pelham always has guys willing to do whatever neccessary. However, it looks as though these kids dont care too much about their individual awards, they seem to have their sights set on laying some revenge on whoever gets in their way in Utica. Good luck to Pelicans. Great Section 1 representatives.
Journal News All-stars need Schulman from harvey (37gs 18a’s 20gp) Hickey from Harvey (Shutdown D) Beshar, Coppola, Rocco, From RCDS.
Thats why they won 3 years out of the last four. There roster is not superior to other teams but their work ethic and unselfishness might be
Off the subject ,What happen to this section ,many of the teams are just bad and it seems much easier to win a section title and you play no one to get to states.
Also the top scorers dont get half the points that guys got just 7 or 8 yrs ago where guys would put up 80 to 100 pts,the league is much weaker yet the better guys are only getting 40 to 50 points which is a nice season but compared to a few yrs ago its not that impressive.I know many players in the section who are good but when you play this competiton you need to be better.
As far as Suffern ,we will see if they can play with the boys upstate ,I say no ,but they better get it this yr ,cause they will be one those teams that will start moving backwards due to who is leaving after this season and it will be awhile before they get back to states,Schelling and his classy program (not) is running out of time.
Maybe they can add sherding with a *. Like they wanted to do with Bonds
If sportsmanship counts what about getting suspended from school during the season?
Complete bs
“D”
Heres the lesson.
Don’t break doors at west point.
Live and learn.
have seen this a few places on the blog, but WHO got suspended from school? if we don’t name names, can we say what team he plays for?
wont name names, but it was a player on the number one team in the section.
