Here’s what the regional brackets look like, with everyone but Pelham one win away from Utica. All of these games are scheduled for Saturday. It’s going to be tough sledding in the semifinals for the Pelicans, and for Suffern, if the Mounties get by Monroe-Woodbury.
Division 1
Monroe-Woodbury (9) vs. Suffern (1)
West Genesee (3) vs. Niagara-Wheatfield (6)
Saratoga Springs (2) vs. Massena (10)
Ithaca (4) vs. Pittsford (5)
Division 2
Pelham (1) bye
Batavia Notre Dame (5) vs. Kenmore East (6)
Saranac Lake (7) vs. Queensbury (2)
Oswego (3) vs. Salmon River (10)

Interesting that Pelham has already played 5 games against teams left in both tournaments. Yes Kenmore is good but so is Pelham. Kenmore has a strong offense and Pelhams forte is team defense and they of all the teams in the D II bracket are probably the best suited to take these guys on. Salmon will come out of the other side and that Pelham Salmon game up here a few weeks ago was a great high school game and a 3-3 tie. Glad Pelham got the bye, it sort of makes up for them getting it taken away last year by the section 3 referees. My view of Pelham is they play their absolute best against formidable opponents {Massena Salmon and RFA and Suffern} They will be AOK
So a potential Suffern-Massena final could happen on the 20th anniversary of the 92 championship.
Sufferns should win no matter where the game is played, but it was an interesting point brought up Sunday that MW, as the home team, is playing this game at SOR.
I know that MW used Sport-O as their home rink, but in anticipation of a regional playoff game with Suffern, could they have scheduled this game elsewhere if they wanted? BIA, the now opened Ice-Time (more convenient for MW fans), or even the Dutchess Civic Center.
Just a little gamesmenship here, to get some advantage of being the “home” team.
C-North was subject to this a couple of years ago, when Palisades wasn’t an approved playoff rink. North and Suffern had split the home and home regular season games for 2 consectutive years. In the second year North was the higher seed and “home” team, but the game (section championship) was played at SOR…an undeniable Suffern advantage, if only because the C-North fans complained for one whole week about this, basically psyching themselves into beleiving it was a Suffern advantage.
... Suffern won the Section in overtime, sending C-North to the outbracket and a one week journey criss-crossing New York State.
From what I’ve seen from Kenmore East so far I see them taking care of Notre Dame of Batavia no problem and making it to the semi finals against Pelham. Both teams are very strong. We all know what Pelham has done this season. They play with a strong team defense and just let the goals come to them. Their shut down defense is the key factor to their play. Just to show people what they are up against this is the schedule with most scores that I found for Kenmore East.

I think if Pelham plays the way that they are known to play they have a good chance this year. They have help coming from everywhere on this Pelham team and they are very determined to get to the finals and win it all this year because of what happened last year. They have what it takes. LETS GO PELHAM!!!
It seems over the last few years that the better the opponent the better Pelham plays. Hopefully it follows that way next weekend.
Except for New Hartford… they were way too good
Al. The regional game could have been played anywhere. Bad choice by MW selecting SOR. Parents are outraged that the coach selected SOR giving Suffern another assist, not that they needed it. Suffern playing their “away” regional game at home is a nice gift from the “home” team, MW.
Pelham shut out New Hartford 5-0 this season.
Talking about in the state championship game in 2009. They were NASTY
Ah yes. They would have beaten the Div 1 champs that year. Amazing how down they were this year. Goes to show that you never know who will rise each season.
When do they pick the all section teams ? How many are chosen and how are they selected?
Suffern-Massena would be such a good game in the states title game
Anyone know what happened to FOTG?
Yeah. Rye not only didnt make it to West Point but they lost a playoff game at home to Scarsdale blowing a three goal lead. To make matters worse for fotg Rye lost to Mamaroneck in a total rebuild year for the Tigers, lost to Pelham again at home (a shutout) and the final dagger? Pelham wins its third Sectional title in the last four years and going to Utica again three times in the last four years. Just too much for the fotg to take.
Too bad W Genny and Suffern are on the same side of the draw. That could be the best game of playoffs
Pelham has been the dominant team in D2 since 2004. 5 Sectional title’s, 4 Regional title’s, 4 Final fours and 1 Final and this year is still going…........
Monroe-Woodbury did the right thing. Sportorama came through for them when Ice Time was closed. They played home games at SOR and booked the ice back in October for this game.
Wishing Suffern and Pelham all the best in the states, now it us against them. Section 1 against the rest of the state – go Section 1!
@missing person – Remind me never to ask you where Jimmy Hoffa is…
Too bad FOTG can’t get over it and be a Section 1 fan.
The all-league & all-section teams have been released (as well as player of the year, coach of the year, etc.). The entire list of who won the awards can be found here:

New Hartford was a great team in 2009, but don’t forget that Greece Athena /Odyssey went 27-0 to win Section 1, beating Mamaroneck in the final. I believe NH lost twice that season.
I’m very curious as to why Scarsdale (4th Best Team in Sec 1 by your standards) only received 1 all league honor.
Scarsdale only gets one All League because of where they finished in their League Standings during the regular season. The higher you finish, the more picks you get, and vice Versa.
Not a shock that John Orlando would support the Monroe-Woodbury vs. Suffern game to be played at Sportorama. What’s good for Suffern is good for all, right John.
Agree with John Orlando. it wasn’t my first thought, but can concede that MW should keep their business with the rink they played in all season. That’s how things are normally handled in “real world” business transactions.
This isn’t Wall Street. This is High School. I think most reasonable people would understand if Monroe Woodbury would want to play a game of this importance at least on a neutral site as opposed to other teams hometown rink. It was M/W home rink by default this year.
USA Hockey is trending towards less and less hitting as they are trying to adjust the game to avoid injuries. Meantime the USA Junior Team performs poorly against Canada. This is somewhat telling of some of the differences in the game as played North of the Border vs the USA Hockcey American Development Model. While the USA National Development Mondel is preaching skill and less hitting Canada is preaching Hitting and a more Traditional Game. Thoughts?

As Section One Chairman I had absolutely NO say in where Section Nine chose to play the Regional Game.
Remember Ice Time was saved late in the Fall by the Civic Center.
At Section 1. In D1 that year was Greece Athena, who was 24-0. To say Kenmore would have beaten them is just silly. Greece Athena smoked everyone except Mamaroneck that year. Pelham overachieved that year and it made Kenmore look even better than what they were since they played a team that overachieved. I’m sure it would have been a good game between Kenmore and Greece Athena but I would give the edge to Greece Athena. BTW, Pelham was fairly non-competitive in that game and were happy just to get there.
I cannot believe some of you. Some people are not happy unless they have a controversy or something to complain about. Its Monroe Woodburys HOME game, Section 9s call all the way. They chose to play it at Sportorama. A big team like Monroe should have their home rink business in order. They could have secured ice anywhere but chose Sportorama. Oh, and please this is not the NHL do not over rate the crowd, they cannot score any goals. Monroe is like twice the enrollment of Suffern and the school is close to the rink, let Monroe bring their fans. Oh and to curious, Scarsdale was the fourth best division 2 team in the playoffs, meaning the last three weeks of the season. Keep in mind that in their league standings they finished 4th, with a 3-3 record with league losses to New Rochelle (thats right) Pelham and ETB. The awards that were given out last night are ALL LEAGUE awards. They finished fourth thats the way it goes.
@NJD
Point taken. Greece Athena was an amazing team that year. No need to get offended by my comment or feel slighted. That was 2009.
By the way, we were discussing Willy East, not Kenmore. Go back and read before you get so agitated.
Oops. New Hartford.
We all make mistakes
Evidently touched on a nerve there John. Never claimed you had anything to do with choice of venue. Just observed that you felt you needed to throw your support for it.
The easiest thing to do for MW would be to close up the hockey program. No Ice Time rink, no other section 9 competition, outdoor practices at Bear Mountain, probably 75 pct away games.
But they did the hard thing, and the right thing and kept it going. Help is needed and concessions have to be made. The section 1 teams help by giving them near by games, and they enter into business deals, and need to honor them.
Let’s hope for the program to keep going and Ice Time to stay open and section 9 teams to reverse the hockey decline we have seen.
At section 1,
That’s pretty funny that you got on NJD for a mistake, and then you make a mistake on your own post in which you state to go back and read. Maybe you should read your own post before you hit publish.
A seasoned veteran like Ned bigby would never make such an error. He has his mom read through all his posts before publishing.
@RF
I know. I was laughing at that. I hate when people correct others and then make mistakes themselves!! Hey. At least I caught it and admitted it, right?!
Also need to give FOTG some respect here. There could be a ton of reasons he hasn’t posted lately. Highly doubt it has anything to do with Rye not playing.
No other regular poster has been more consistent in his praise, and respectful to all the other section 1 programs than the esteemed FOTG.
New Hartford was great that year. I don’t see them as consistantly being great though. Some teams are always in the state mix. Pelham, Suffern, West Genessee, Massena, Salmon River, and one of the kenmore teams… I get them mixed up, and one of the Williamsville teams.
the rules your link was all about fighting. 14-15 yr old kids fighting how lame is that?
Fuel,
Please i am dying to see that goal, no goal, against Massena 4 years ago, please upload so we can see we all want you to sleep
good luck suffern.. go get em. this IS YOUR YEAR..
@Hanson Brothers…......Get over it already…...it would be like Massena complaining about the Suffern state championship on a phantom icing and penalty call. You never heard one word from Massena. Suffern was a very good team and put themselves in a position to win and took advantage of their opportunities…...Toughen up
Suffern had Greece Athena beat the year they went 27-0. They were up 2-0 and then Kevin Norwin went down and Suffern ended up losing 3-2.
