The stretch run for Section 1 programs is underway, but the pace really doesn’t increase until the weekend. A lot of teams have discovered the importance of getting into a rhythm heading into the playoffs, and have scheduled accordingly. I don’t see any important games tonight, although Scarsdale needs to end a six-game slide and regain some confidence before anyone sees them as a threat again. The Raiders have only completed nine games and are going to be on the ice a lot in the final 19 days of the regular season.
Leave a score if you’re out watching, please. I’m flying today, and will attempt to post the power rankings along the way or when I get to Indianapolis. If you want to follow along, my Twitter account for all things Super Bowl is @hoopsmbd.

I heard that the michelin man coach from carmel
Was tossed out again must be some kind of record
Yea, the coach blew a casket and got thrown out along with 3 of his players. When Carmel realized they had no chance of winning they went to plan “B” and went head hunting. They weren’t to successful there either.
Jezzy reminds me of what kpv resorted to last week
Did not see kpv but did witness the Mahopac/Carmel game and it is sad to watch kids who are losing resort to only trying to engage in physical confrontation, unfortunately for Carmel they did not have the guns to pull it off, but they tried. In the end, Mahopac did what it came to do – they won the game and they played many of their 4th line players toward the end of the game.
coaches in this situation face a real dilema. you want to play your 3rd and 4th liners to save your better more experienced players from getting game misconducts but the 3&4th liners are usually fresh/sophs who are smaller and can get run over by the idiots from Carmel (or whoever). so you play some 1st and 2nd liners who can handle themselves and they get caught for fighting and game misconducts, (ie, suspensions)...
tough situations but of course, carmel has that idiot coach so its not surprising…
sounds like st.anthony, except with no talent
The reffing in section one continues to be a sore spot for hockey. Someone should look in to this. Across the board it’s been nothing but complaints from parents, coaches and players. There should be an overhaul of the refs and move to a three man system with competent head referees and two linesmen. The consistency of officiating from game to game and ref to ref is atrocious. I feel bad for the players. The refs are quick to call anything a big crowd of fans reacts to. They should talk more to the players on the ice and coaches during the game. Not just when all he’ll starts breaking out. Give more warnings but call it right.
So far from the truth A. Parents? have no clue on what proper calls are. Those who complain are the same who complain about ice time for junior. The refs already tolerate too much b.s. by people who cannot control themselves or people who have no idea as to whats going on. Some coaches, not all, lose it in front of their kids and the kids see that and also disrespect the refs. People do not respect authority and it makes it worse. Its high school hockey.
Look at the top programs in Section One. Teams whose coaching staffs demand discipline. Those coaches might chirp to the refs every once in a while at a strategic moment, but never disrespect them. Games among those teams rarely get out of control.
It starts from the top. One of the most important jobs of the HS coach dealing with mid teen agreed boys is to make sure his players respect the coach, their opponent and the refs. Simple as that.
A
If you think section 1 refs are bad you should see those beauts in the CHSHL.
You would not believe the way some of those guys call games.
if the refs were to call anything less then they do now in the CHSHL there would be a legit bench clearing brawl almost every game, those teams really get into it
Great points Fanotgame.
Have any teams been ruled out of playoff contention as of yet?
A,
Fanotgame is right on the money.
When a coach who doesn’t yell out all game has a question/problem the ref is more apt to adress the issue and listen. Otherwise they get desenitized to the constant complaining. The best teams have respectful/thoughtful Captains who take that responsibility seriously. They are the ones to ask for explainations and clarifications.
As on who does various leagues, there is a lot to be said for the 2-ref system. 2 refs seeing and calling penalties is better than 1 skating up and down to see and call more of a chance to miss/be out of position.Even the best will be out of position sometimes and you don’t need another Upstate /Pelham type of controversy. The best is 2 ref / 2line but is costly to the leagues. Consistency and communication are the key to managing the game well.
Remember players—After the game per Federation Rules any unsportsmanlike conduct in the handshake line is a DQ.Rule 6-1-1/6-1-2.
RCDS score?
In chshl, only st marys has been eliminated in A division
Princeton Day won 5-2 (EN) vs. RCDS. 2-2 at the end of 2. Princeton Day moved to 11-1 on the season with the win
Farrell 4 st mary 1
Bad for iona
scarsdale-mt.pleasant score?
Several junior leagues in the area use a 2 referee and 1 linesman system that seems to work very well. The Linesman goes from Blue Line to Blue Line while you still have one ref in front of the play and one trailing the play. While it is not perfect, it does allow for less BS behind the play that seems to start a lot of the extra activity.

iona-farrell friday night will be season-determining for iona
assuming iona loses to st.anthony saturday at nassau…if iona loses friday night, they finish 500, 7-7-2, and at risk of not making playoffs
Fanotgame has it right on the head, it comes from the top, but he forgot it starts with the parents first who have no control and it filters down to their children.
It is pretty comical that the only complaints about reffing come from the Brewster rink and some of the teams from there. You never hear Pelham complaining, or Rye, Mam, WP, or Ryetown, and they have the same refs, good coaching and good parenting. Looking for excuses instead of accepting responsibility will bode well for your childrens future. What i saw from the L/P parents on friday before the Rye Town game was the epitomy of why the players have no control, a 2 handed baseball bat swing from one of their players and they are sceaming it should have been a minor if anything, wow
scarsdale win 9-1 Nicholas and German with 5 points a piece
schell injured in the second period similar to hit pacioretty took in the playoffs last year… didnt finsish the game
North Rock 4
Rye Town 2
Scarsdale looked like they did earlier on this year. They shortened their bench early and got a dominant lead. They added a new defensemen in number 21 who looked good and was able to give a rest to number 20 and 13. The addition of Nicholas will help jurmain a lot as they have two fast guys that are hard to stop. The goals came easy tonight. let’s see tomorrow when they have a good opponent
Jezzy we understand your a Mahopac mom but don’t make it that obvious. Carmel did not go head hunting they just retaliated to a bad call by the official after the kid on Mahopac decided to thrown down the shortest kid on Carmel 15 seconds after the whistle and was not thrown out.
What happened in the NR/RTH game?
Your guys are quick and move the puck but let’s se what happens when they play a team that is quick and takes the body.
carmel had 14 pen. to 4 for pac those numbers represent who the thugs were
One of those nights, R.T. was just a little off with passes and shots, but give credit to N.R. they capitalized on their opportunities and we did not
Thank you Paul Marshall. I’d like to know if there are any local refs who actually UNDERSTAND the game of hockey, more than just from an officiating point of view. How many of them have played at a high level? Say, real Junior A, Division I or beyond. Probably not many, that’s why they ref and don’t continue to play or coach. The three man system works, period. One linesman is the A-1, like an assistant head ref. He has the authority to call a really bad penalty behind the play like a blatant slash, punch to the head etc. and can let the head ref know. I’m not making excuses, I’m just calling it like it is. I’d like to see some officials’ resume’s.
So “A” what you are saying is that if the official did not play top level hockey they cant be a good ref? Kerry Fraiser was the top in the NHL and never played pro. As for your 3 man system is is old and outdated, Only USA hockey uses it and it does not work. The system you like 1 ref and 2 Assistant refs does not work since the assistants are nothing but glorified liners who are asked not to call anything. The system you should ask for is the monkey in the middle 2 refs 1 liner. The 1 liner does not call anything but icing and watches the zone the puck is in. I would like the coaches to take the officials test and lets see the score they get. Lets see your resume “A” then we can take your comments to heart
That is exactly what I said. The goals came easy for Scarsdale but lets see what happens when they have a tough opponent.
Regarding Scarsdale…anything is possible! Some of the best young talent around.
Schell & Nicholas are excellent Freshmen (Nicholas missed almost two months with injury and now Schell might be out). Someone referred to a “new” defenseman number “20” – was it David Ko (another Freshmen who missed more than a month with injury)?
