No big shakeup this week, just a couple of tweaks. And do I really think Yorktown is better than Mamaroneck or Iona Prep or Clarkstown. No. But the Huskers do have a couple of wins against ranked teams – Mahopac and Brewster – so why not put them in?

How do these rankings make any sense whatsoever?
New Rochelle beat Clarkstown 3-2 in the last second of the game.
RCDS beat Clarkstown 6-2 and it should have been way worse.
These rankings are atrocious.
article on the rcds-iona game
http://www.msgvarsity.com/westchester/rcds-hockey-edges-iona-prep-1.911291
love how the article doesn’t mention anything of the iona defenseman scoring on himself on an end-around-pass behind-the-net-attempt to his partner with no rcds player in his zone to give rcds a 5-4 lead and momentum the rest of the way in the 3rd
If the writers purpose is to single out and embarass high school kids than he should have written that.
Duh….
Reposting under a more relevant topic, while JJ may be ‘laying in the weeds’, they seem, at a closer look, to be capable of beating any team in D2 this February, especially if they can be more disciplined vs. similar opponents.
3 of their 1 goal losses, 2 to Mahopac and 1 to Brewster, involved 3rd period collapses. Loss 1 to Mahopac saw Jay blow 3, 3-goal leads, giving up 5 goals in the 3rd and the decisive goal in the last minute. Loss 2 to Brewster saw Jay give up a flukey shorty late in the 3rd which allowed Brewster to tie, and then a tough to swallow OT goal for the Brewster win. Loss 3 to Mahopac featured more than 5 3rd period JJ penalties, and a lead lost in the 3rd with the go ahead goal tallied again in the last minute.
The loss to Pelham, which had both teams banged up and missing a top player, featured JJ coming back from 2-0, 4-2, and 5-3 deficits, to make it 5-4 with half the 3rd period remaining. Unfortunately for JJ they couldn’t even the score, but not for lack of quality opportunities.
After 4 tough losses JJ has an opportunity in their final 6 games to gain knowledge and build momentum going into the playoffs. They will get more crucial big game experience and will be heading into sectionals battle tested and only having not played Scarsdale, Pearl River, and Ossining for D2 competition.
It will be exciting watching the competition for the D2 crown, regardless of how the brackets play out. Ultimately the best team will win, regardless of the path they have to Utica. With a single elimination playoff JJ and a bunch of other teams have a good shot regardless of Pelham and Rye’s typical Division 2 dominance.
lets her some predictions for the game on wednesday. Pelham has the advantage but that means very little in a rivalry game like this i say 4 to 1 pelham
RCDS also.lost to Harvey and one goal win over RTH.
But we should.ignore those games, right?
2 goal win over RTH with lopsided shots, something like 45-15. They also then came back to smoke Harvey with a few of their players back in the lineup.
Maybe New Ro had some bad luck to in some of their wins and losses too? Same as RCDS. Nothimg wrong here with mikes rankings.
these rankings are an absolute joke!
I think there is a wide gap in D-1 between Suffern and teams #2 thru #5. I think any of the teams rated #2 thru #5 can be each other, the key is does anyone have the ability to put together the perfect game to defeat Suffern? Only time will tell. I believe John Jay may be the sleeper in D-II, I think they have just as good of a chance as Pelham or Rye to win the D-II title. I think Brewster is good but has no depth and that will cost them in the playoffs. I think the rankings are fair.
RCDS would crush everyone on this list with the exception of Suffern ! Time to bring Harold Gutmann back . At least he gave all the teams a fair shake . This guy is so bias its ridiculous ! MSG’s rankings are debatable ; these are laughable .
Iona beat Mahopac and Lohud dismisses it . RCDS V Iona is an even game with Iona getting a bad break . Maybe LOHUD should start paying attention to some other teams other than hyping the same team all the time ! The next hockey survey should be : Which team does LOHUD shill for the most ???
It appears that John Jay can’t finish. HAHA, give us your rankings.
Mamo could very well lose their last three games of the season.
Anyone who thinks that Pelham is the same as New Ro or ETB is a joke. ETB was down to pelham 8-3 going into the third and then Pelhams goalie got tossed so they got two goals on a kid who just got on the ice in that game. and New Ro got manhandled 7-1 against Pelham when Pelham had the injuries. JJ cannot compete with Pelham because they barely did when Pelham was not at full strength. Rye and Pelham will be meeting at West Point as usual if the seedings workout that they will only meet in the championship. Pelham and Rye will play tough tomorrow night, and it will be packed at Playland. Pelham wins 3-1. I think Pelham will give Suffern the best game they will have in Section 1 this year. Pelham went up and played RFA and lost 2-0 without Reilly. I dont think they can win, but at home against the Mounties, Pelham will give them a game for at least 2 periods. But Pelham and for that matter Rye cannot be classified with ETB or New Ro.
Pelham’s recent opponent DI RFA is 15-1 and a solid team. But, they have only played one game against a state ranked opponent- a Reillyless DII Pelham. That was the Black Knight’s big regular season game. So much for the Syracuse Section playing such tough schedules. Our Section’s top teams (esp Suffern and Pelham) play some of the toughest schedules in the State. Only the Rochester and Buffalo teams and Sec 10’s Salmon and Massena compare. Maybe the most difficult schedule in the state goes to Rye’s previous opponent Mcquaid who play 10 matches vs. state ranked teams plus additional matches against top catholic teams, incliuding St Joes.
Sufferen
Pelham
Rye
ETB
RCDS
Iona
Brewster
Mahopac
New Ro
1. Suffern
2. Pelham
2. Rye
2. RCDS
5. ETB
6. Iona
7. Brewster
8. Pac
9. New Ro
1. Suffern
2. Rye or Pelham (find out this week)
3. see above
4. RCDS (but too bad no game vs rye this year to know for sure
5. Iona
6. ETB (not a school anyway)
7 – 10 waste of time thinking about
Iona vs ETB would not even be a game, ETB is significantly more talented.
I think it is easier to do in groups.
Group One: Suffern
Group Two: Pelham, Rye
Group Three: ETB, RCDS, New Ro, Mamo, Iona, Pac, Brewster, Jay, Harvey
Group Four: Yorktown, Scarsdale, RTH, WP, Ctwn, Fordham, PR, Pawling, Greeley, North Roc
In case anyone was curious, Ned Bigby and FAN of HOC are NOT the same person.
By the way, we don’t need a poll to figure out who Dougherty shills for. We all know he’s on the Iona payroll.
F of H, the comment “bring back Harold Gutmann” is a classic.
While we are at it, we should consider bringing back:
the Power Leagues,
wood sticks,
cheap plastic “Cosby” helmets with no mask,
Dobbs Ferry HS and Mt Vernon HS hockey,
The twin rinks on 9A with a street brawl every Friday night
and Low Tor.
who cares, not a school.
how is RCDS in the same group as new ro iona and mamo when they played Iona, Iona actually played there better goalie and RCDS thouroghly outplayed them.
What exactly does the RCDS fans and bloggers want? They are a prviate school that only plays what one section 1 team all year? and they do not play any of the section 1 powers either. Instead of worrying about what the section 1 people think about RCDS hockey why doesnt rcds concentrate on beating some of the better prep schools? Its bad enough that they do not really play in any structured league or have a scructured playoff sesytem in place. Their schedule carefully selects the day school preps and the lower end of prep school hockey teams, which is understood as they could not compete at the prep middle range position. For their fans to come on here and constantly complain and say how they are better than thsi public and that public is a joke. They should be better as they have the resources that none of the publics have, and they are not better. If blog credability is so important to these people talk to your coach and tell him to schedule some of the teams on the list. Then you will see what happens. I recall Suffern playing RCDS in the last few years and RCDS never won. I recall Rye never lost either, and Pelham played them once and beat them like 10-1 so get some games with those teams
this is fo “A” who does not like the officials as per his post on 1/30
So “A” what you are saying is that if the official did not play top level hockey they cant be a good ref? Kerry Fraiser was the top in the NHL and never played pro. As for your 3 man system is is old and outdated, Only USA hockey uses it and it does not work. The system you like 1 ref and 2 Assistant refs does not work since the assistants are nothing but glorified liners who are asked not to call anything. The system you should ask for is the monkey in the middle 2 refs 1 liner. The 1 liner does not call anything but icing and watches the zone the puck is in. I would like the coaches to take the officials test and lets see the score they get. Lets see your resume “A” then we can take your comments to heart
Ned Dobbs Ferry had hockey? I remember the rinks on 9A and the friday night fights. Remember Low Tor as well. The good old days
I think mount Vernon and Yonkers should form hockey teams!!
actually rcds beat rye year before last.
groups..game couldve gone either way…was back and forth, leading changing entire game.
rcds went up from a tie game 3rd period on the iona own goal. complete momentum shifter. you went up 2 at that point. and you still needed an extra net winner.
As a transplated upstater I have grown to respect the Pelham and Suffern programs. In my view they have the best shot at making any noise upstate. In watching the Suffern program travel upstate to play at Utica over the last several years I don’t see a team that is as full of confidence as they are during the regular season. Now granted they are up against top notch competition but i’m not sure if each years dissappointment adds to the internal pressure?? You will not convince me that the West Genny team that went undefeated two years ago and won the title was a better team than Suffern. Suffern had outplayed them for most of two periods only to have the perfect storm hit and have them lose an improbable ot game. I recall several years ago Suffern losing to Ithaca, the eventual champ, in 2 OT’s in the frozen four. I thought Suffern was a better all around team then as well. I think they just need to adopt a tougher mental approach with a “No More” attitude. They need to match the other teams intensity from start to finish, a take no prisoners mind set. I do not believe talent is what is holding Suffern back.
I, too wish RCDS was on the Rye schedule this year. The Garnets/Wildcats played four years in a row before this year. Sure, Rye won 3 of those games, with the fourth being a 6-5 RCDS win in a back and forth battle at their place in 2010. By the end of the season (when Rye regulary used them as a playoff tune up) the Wildcats are battle tested and have practiced every day on their own rink. I put RCDS as a top 5 team locally, especially by the end of the season.
only 2 games today (1/31)
scarsdale-new ro 6:30 ice hutch
john jay at pawling 7:30
Kevin Kelly (Rye coach after Zegras) coached a very good Dobbs/Irvington ? with the two Zinman brothers who defeated Pelham 6-5 for the sectional title ages ago. Remember that
here’s the link that differentiates d1 (big boy) and d2 (rcds, harvey, brunswick) in new england prep
http://www.playyourgame.com/nepsiha.html
Division I should have three groups
1. Suffern
2. ETB, New Rochelle, Mahopac, Mamaroneck
3. Clarkstown, RTH, White Plains
1 – Suffern can beat them all – but on that one night that a team has a hot goalie and the flow is going you never know.
The four teams in #2 are are equal and could compete against each other equally
The three teams at #3 would all lose to the teams in #2 and will have to wait another year for their younger players to develop
In D-II
It will between Rye, Pelham as the top two teams and slightly behind them are John Jay and Yorktown. Brewster is off my list because they rely to much on one player and in the playoffs that will work, the better teams will shut Brewster down by by focusing on a play or two like Yorktown and mahopac did when they defeated Brewster easily. By the way, Pelham is beatable!
Yonkers team would’ve had one heck of a defenseman last 4 years who wouldn’t have had to move across the TZ.
wrong. that list is old wick is in division one now.
current rankings. wick lost to 3 teams on that list. highest ranked team by 2, other two by one.
oops

Dobbs-
You’re thinking of Woodlands, not Dobbs Ferry. Woodlands had a stand-alone team for a long time, then they merged with Irvington in the mid-80’s and the Woodlands coach left to become the assistant coach (and head JV coach) at Suffern for the next roughly 10 years (his son is now following his his shoes as a varsity asstant and modified head coach for the Mounties). When he left, that is when Kevin Kelly took over and coached them for the last couple of years until the team folded and he went to Rye to take over for Zegras.
Dobbs had hockey in the Stone Age. Some good players too. Mt Vernon hockey…uhhhhh not so good.
And the two best teams in the league (by far) in the early/mid 70s were Greenwich and Darien. Apparently too good.
agree, that first prep link is old
believe south kent is D1 as well..
Which team is the most underrated at this point? Who could be the real Cinderella story heading in to playoffs? Ideas? Just curious.
For ZEB.
I guess the number one developmental hockey program in the country, USA hockey, is getting it wrong then. Hhmmmm. More and more pros from the USA are now in the NHL. Canadian kids come and play college hockey not only for an education but for the game in the states. And to say Frazier was one of the best, maybe, he was consistent, but that’s just one example out of the hundreds, if not thousands of refs that are out there. My point is that I believe a ref may understand the game better if they’ve actually played at a competitive level beyond 18 years old. Or maybe you just like fraziers hair.
Suffern is far and away the best and will get no playoff competition at all. I agree division 2 is a dog fight with Rye and Pelham having the edge. Oh and Jeezy saying Pelham is beatable? Everyone is beatable.
The 3 man system is old and out of date why do you think the NHL & NCAA have moved on from it. For developing players USA hockey is great but they need to update the reffing systems. You made a comment on how a ref needs to play to be good and I just pointed out that many even NHL refs did not play high level hockey. Fraser did not have to wear a helmet due to the fact of all his hair spray. If the refs called the game like the videos up on USA hockey or the federations web site we would have 60 to 70 penalties per game. I ask you have you ever put on the stripes?
msgv poll is out
1, suffern
2, mw
3, pelham
4, rcds
5, rye
6, etb
7, ip
8, mahopac
9, new ro
10, harvey
msgv also notes that they’ll be showing live iona-st.anthony’s saturday from nassau (12:45)
I see that goalie Commendar did not play for Iona? What happened? there was alot of buzz by his supporters a month ago? Did he lose the starting position?
Zinman boys played for Irvington if I remember correctly
Zeb,
That is a rhetorical question, A has nver put on the stripes, matter of fact may not even be able to skate yet he can tell that all ref’s he see’s are bad.
Again you have not heard boo from the southern teams in regards to the officiating this year, but you have heard from the BIA teams, but only a few. Pretty funny that Somers, Yorktown, JJ, Greeley, Fox lane, Byram, JFK, Pawling, and Mahopac never, or not often complain about the officials, yet the remaining teams(you can figure out who they are) are always complaining. Good parenting and coaching go a long way, the teams above do not look for excuses, they continue on. A life lesson for all, by the way Rye Town lost last night we did not complain about the officiating, take note L/P.
Sorry left out Brewster, they rarely blame ref’s either
@ Suffern – Suffern has a minimal chance of losing the D-I championship, I think there are two teams in D-I that have a good chance at beating Pelham – just saying!
By the way Suffern looks like it may have a rebuilding year next year, all their scoring is coming from the seniors, it will be hard to replace that scoring power.
To ZEB.
I have put on the stripes. Played and coached at a high level. I’m not saying refs should’ve played at a higher level to be a better ref but it may make them understand the game better and ref in a different way. I think you would appreciate a ref who has played at a decent level of hockey as opposed to one who has not. Their decisions on ice would probably have more clout. Plus, the game would be managed from a more hockey-like perspective rather than a fan based perspective. Trust me, I give refs a lot of credit for putting up with the bs but I still think it could be better considering the level of competition in the area.
Strange..Commender has fallen off..Lipsky and commender seem to be splitting time now..Lipsky is the “starter” on jv,so his availability is limited
Looks like Scarsdale will be moving up and New Rochelle will be taking a step back. The playoff picture is starting to take a different view, lets see what the next two weeks bring.
A
You have put on the stripes for what? i know you played NHL or minor leagues but you said you officiated what? whatever maybe the ref’s should come to McDonald’s and tell you how to flip burger’s.
again the teams down south don’t complain, stop the BS and accept what your children do they will be better off
RCDS fans please stop complaining and just relax. the game is played by kids to have fun and sometime everyone just needs that reminder
