I see a pretty good rivalry game to close a busy evening at Brewster Ice Arena. Normally, you get a pretty good show when Carmel and Mahopac bump heads in any sport. The Indians are clearly having a better season, but the Rams have a couple of scorers, too, and a strong goal-tender. I’m packing for the Super Bowl, so leave a score if you’re out watching.

No s after junior in team website
League is called ijhl .. tier 3 junior A
thats a misnomer if there ever was one. Why dont they just call it midget? Oh and do we really need to water down the junior programs any more than they already are?
No it’s not. It’s midget A hockey for three times the price and then daddy can say his kid played juniors.
I agree with misnomer. The junior hockey around here is glorified midget AAA.
This is going to be some game. Looking forward to seeing this marquee matchup. Strengths and flaws? Should be fun

Every year I waste my time watching the NHL all star game. I’d be better off watching an over 40 men’s league game…. what a waste! Mike Emrick trying so hard to make it interesting, and trying so hard to make it like Hartnell has anything funny or interesting to say. He’s a FLyer, which makes him a moron. UNFUNNY, UNINTERESTING, NO CONTACT, NOT WATCHING THE LAST TWO PERIODS.
Exactly right i am a die flyer fan, this game is a joke
2-0 st Joes halfway through 1st
Bronzo huge difference when in lineup for Joes
Not even Lipsky now back on D for ip stopping him

stuck here in brewster but got updates from family at the ETB game…ETB was missing 2 defensemen and the stepinac goalie stood on his head otherwise game could have been very lopsided. Freshman goalie started for ETB and got the win
Mahopac controlled the game from the beginning to the end, as usual with the rivalry with the neighboring town Carmel and Mahopac gets a little chippy. It was sad to see the Carmel coach fall prey to the games that kids play by verbally abusing the referees and getting thrown out. Mahopac appears to be working on a few line adjustments in anticipation of the playoffs.
carmel embarrassed themselves this evening, there behavior was not appropriate even the coach got tossed
Carmel was out of control last night. Once they knew it was over they began running around head hunting. I think a total of 4 kids got tossed last night. 1 from Pac and 3 from Carmel, including Carmel coach. Pac was shuffling lines a little bit and played their 4th line towards the end of the game. Pac goalie played well. Tough season for Carmel.
ETB v. Stepinac, I’ll bet AM was in goal and had 60 saves or something.
mamo coach was present but unfotunate for him all’s he saw was a head hunting carmel team and pac running different lines and playing all their freshman in the end pac got what they came for a win
Agree with comments from “A” Carmel was out of control once they realized they were about to get beat they wanted to make this game a game of who can take who’s head off.
Some big matches coming up starting on Wedneday with Pelham at Rye. Then Bosco at Suffern on Friday, Suffern at Mamo on Saturday (not that big this year) and Suffern at Pelham next Tuesday (Pelham looking to redeem themselves). Getting interesting now.
My local top 10:
1. Suffern- An interesting string of games coming up
2. Pelham- Starting to hit their stride
3. Rye- Can they bang with the Pelicans on Wednesday?
4. ETB- Still winning all the games they should. Some by the narrowest of margins
5. RCDS- Think the Wildcats belong here
6. New Ro- Can they give ETB a game?
7. Mamo- Will they be competitive vs. Mounties at home?
8. Iona- Still searching for consistency
9. Pac- An interesting team. Looking forward to the Mamo match
10. Brewster- A loss to Ytown telling. Not tested again until Jay at the end of the regular season
10. Jay- Are they the new #3 in DII?
10. Harvey- Another up and down team
DI:
1. Suffern
2. ETB
3. New Ro
4. Mamo
5. Pac
6. RTH
7. WP
8. Ctown
DII:
1. Pelham
2. Rye
3. Brewster
3. Jay
5. Yorktown
6. Scarsdale
7. PR
8. Pawling
8. Greeley
ETB had plenty of fire power on the ice and stepinac goalie played well. The game was with out energy. The positive was finally we have #9 back in the line up.
Etb-Mamo on Fri 2/3 @8pm this should be a good game. Also senior night!
Pelham will handily beat Rye – a few weeks ago I posted that if you don’t have speed to the outside Pelham was too physical and the only team in Section 1 with enough team speed was Suffern – I meant the comment as a compliment to Pelham – I think Rye gets beat up in the match and loses by at least 3 goals – Pelham and Suffern are clearly best in Div II and I.
Regarding other posts stream Suffern has had a great 3 year run – next few years they will come back to the pack (on the State level – they still will be favored to win the Section) and have dwindling numbers – the modified team is thin as far as numbers go – still have some quality – the number of players picks up with younger kids 3 to 6 grade – it blows me away how many kids play hockey in the Mamaroneck program – as per the posts Mamaroneck has over 100 kids in the current program – that will never happen at Suffern – It tells me that the NJ Travel league is probable better at developing talent than the Hudson Valley league at the top end or it is a lot cheaper to play in the Mamaroneck system than the Suffern system and everyone signs up. I’m not sure how the Mamaroneck talent is developed but in Suffern the talent is the result of travel hockey.
The argument of where the kids play and how the kids in Suffern all want to wear the sweater has a lot of merit – I also think that Suffern H.S. is a quality academic school in comparison to the Bosco/Bergan Catholic/St. Joes and when you take into account the $15k it is difficult to pay the $$$$. My last point, which I’m sure everyone is happy about, is if you elect to send your son to Bosco, for example, he will have a difficult time getting on the ice unless he can really play – the fact is Bosco is just deeper than Suffern – so unless your kid is a stud – is it worth the money? Suffern and Bosco’s top two lines are close in talent but Bosco has more depth.
@Ginger- Agree on Suffern middle- pretty weak this year. Lost badly to Rye, but of course who knows if all available players were there. Previous year Suff took apart RMS. Hudson valley league is the weakest of those around locally. LI league probably closer to NJ travel. If your HS program is drawing mostly from HVHL, you are most likely looking at leaner seasons to come.
Ginger,
I thought High School was about getting the best education, why would anyone factor in the hockey playing time when considering sending thier son to either Suffern or Bosco (or any other school for that matter)?
Stupid – A quality education has to be the most important consideration but if your child loves ice hockey or any other sport, how could you not factor in whether or not your high school has a team.
I’m going to assume you were being sarcastic with your last post?
thats exactly what the families of the mount vernon basketball team thinks, too
Mamaroneck travel plays in the long island league. Not Hudson valley. Surprising when suffern modified does not have a full roster of kids.
Part of the reason so many kids play mamk is this. They have rec hockey for kids that don’t play travel. Then when they come into 7th grade, rec and travel kids come out for the team. No cuts. They don’t mind having a huge roster and playing time getting minimized because it is 100% fully funded by the school. If mamk charged just a few hundred per kid, the numbers would drop quickly. But parents figure”hey it’s free, let junior go out for the team, he’s guaranteed a spot”. I don’t think this helps he program, as a matter of fact, I think it hurts the program if anything.
@spy report – that makes sense – Suffern ain’t free that’s for sure, tuition, golf outings, 50/50, etc., not complaining – just the facts Danno.
@stupid – not sure why other people make decisions that they make – I make decisions for my children – actually called my son’s dream college admission dep’t and asked whether Bosco or Suffern had a better reputation and sent my son to Suffern based on that schools recomendation (Go Irish) – not sure if you were preaching to me or not but different families have different priorities – some are chasing the dream, some want a Catholic education, some want a private school education, some want smaller classes, some want prep school for the education – not my job to worry about another person choice – unlike others I can assure you my son will not play in college so he is going to what we have determined to be the best school for his future. I hope he gets a chance to play and have a good time but his life will go on regardless of how many goals he scores.
PS if you were being sarcastic my sincere apologies – STUPID.
Every program (hopefully) does what’s best for their kids as well as their own interests. That may be horribly naive but I hope not. Suffern’s modified numbers are low this year while other programs need extra folding chairs for their benches. Go figure.
alot of people choose private schools because of the benefits later on in life…almost like getting a degree from an ivy or close-knit new england school…diploma/degree gets you places, ie, workforce related…you’d be surprised what getting your ed. from a rcds, bosco, bergen cath, iona, brunswick, etc. can do for you
and also…alot of people do it because its where they went to school…lots of privates/catholics are an alum following..
Down in #’s does not always mean down in talent. I am sure that Suffern will still manage to throw out 2 quality lines and at least 3 quality defensemen for the next 2-3 yrs. They have a sophmore goalie on the roster who is basically splitting time with Stark. While they may not be the favorites I believe they will still be in the mix to win the section and who know what will happen from there. Sometimes it is the teams that are under the radar that supprise you.
An education may open some doors. The reality is if you don’t work hard and produce, it doesn’t matter where you went to school/college. No one cares where you went to school after you start working.
Suffern will be fine soph goalie, d- carudo is a junior, 3 sophs on d that are fine – one doesn’t even play who is 6’1” 200 plus who can skate and plays travel, have at least two solid lines coming back, have a few kids coming up that will contribute next year – at the very latest 2 years – Suffern will be just fine – one of the “problems” of being so deep and loaded is some kids who can play don’t even see the ice.
ramapo youth hockey is much better than mamaroneck youth hockey at most levels now. Not really even close. However, Ramapo draws from many towns other than Sufferen. Mamaroneck is, as far as I know, the only program that does not let anyone from outside Mamaroneck play. Stupid, because they generally aren’t that good. The town would generate more better players if they let kids from out of town in to increase the competitiveness of their teams. New Rochelle could be awesome in a couple of years depending on how many of the kids stay in the NR system. Their are about 9 very good AA and AAA kids. Some already go to private school.
“The town would generate more better players if they let kids from out of town in to increase the competitiveness of their teams.” – What are you talking about?
Go to English class much?
Mamaroneck does not care about creating an awesome travel team ya dummy. They fill all their teams with Mamaroneck/Larchmont residents because that is who pays the taxes which pays for the rink. Why would they allow outsiders to come in and takes spots away from taxpayers. The rink is owned by the town. It is not like most of the other rinks that are privately owned. As for saying that they are not that good…. The Pee Wee A team just got back from Michigan playing in the Silver Sticks tournament, they got there by being very good and winning a northeast tournament. Not every level is great, but if they played in the hudson valley league they would win a lot more, but choose to play in the Long Island League for the better competition. I guess if they allowed outsiders they could be the more betterest.
@Rocketfuel – If your statement is correct and Mamo and Larchmont pay the taxes for the rink to be in service then by all means they should have first shot or exclusive rights at the rink if that is what the taxpayers want. It is hard to argue with that point. The probably would field a better hockey team if they allowed outside players in but then they would have to eliminate kids from the town whose families pay for the rink. That would be a hard argument to win – the town residents are the owners of the rink by being stakeholders through their taxes.
So there is a post on here with someone claiming that they called Notre Dame and the Irish recommended Suffern over Don Bosco for admittance?
I just do not believe that. Not that Suffern is anyway a bad school, its a very good public school if the student uses it correctly, and will get you a civil service position if not correctly used. But to assert that an ND admittance counselor was less than receptive tone of the most known catholic high schools in the country is ridiculous.
Al – A few points if I may:
1) Your comment about civil service being the fate of unsuccessful students at public (Suffern) high schools is insulting to the men and women who have chosen to serve their communities as police officers, firefighters and EMT’s.
2) Don Bosco Prep School is nationally recognized for their sports program but their academics are not superior to Suffern and many of the local publics.
1) apologies to first rsponders.
2) re read the post that purported bosco inferiority. Make your hockey point without insultimg fanilies who exercise school choice. I did not purport Bosco acadenic superiority, its the other poster wo stated Suffern superiority.
I reacted to what was an incredulously pompous statement.
Dear Al,
I did not say that Bosco was inferior or superior – I had a discussion with the admissions department and to be frank was surprised with the outcome of that discussion – For the record I am a grad of the Salesian network and had anticipated sending my son to Bosco – you can call ND 574 631 7505 if you would like to – As I said parents make choices based on different needs – if your talking athletics Bosco is the way to go – academics private schools have a difficult time competing financially – as far as making a pompous statement – I assume you are referencing my blog – I think you should re-read my post. Families make choices of what school to send their children to based on many factors – strictly from an academic basis Suffern as well as most public schools have more resources to offer a broader education.
I would also suggest that you call ND – it will take 24 hours for them to return the call with their response.
I am just relaying what the admissions dep’t response was to my inquire – if that is “incredulously pompous” so be it – I guess you calling would end the discussion.
Dear Ginger,
I’m not calling. True or not, its still a self serving remark. As pompous as anything Thurston Howell the third would say.
And to to think I used to like you more than MaryAnn.
Al
Understood – everyone has their opinion – If you read my post you will note I didn’t say one school was superior – I said I made my decision based on the feedback I received – that’s all I said. As far as “true or not” – that’s not very nice to say. I’m sure many public schools in the area would get the same response. The education world has changed in the last 20 years – it is extremely difficult for the privates to compete financially today – If I said Rye – for example – was a better school than Salesian H.S. would that be “Pompous”?
As far as not calling – that’s fine – I’m glad I made the call – they also made suggestions regarding community service, etc., that the admission dep’t stress.
I was simply responding to “STUPID”
Ginger,
Let’s not get off the rails here. My comment which was serious was in response to the part of your post
” My last point, which I’m sure everyone is happy about, is if you elect to send your son to Bosco, for example, he will have a difficult time getting on the ice unless he can really play – the fact is Bosco is just deeper than Suffern – so unless your kid is a stud – is it worth the money? Suffern and Bosco’s top two lines are close in talent but Bosco has more depth.”
Your kid can always play hockey and he probably has (even town programs are essential pay). Maybe, if your choice of schools you are considering is between a school that doesn’t have a hockey team versus one that does, then the above might be part of the equation. If not then, I think the above is scary on a few levels. Most important is letting little johnny learn to play on the third line of life if that’s where he belongs.
Read the sentence before, you must be in politics, its obvious I’m not, talk about taking something out of context. If all things are equal as far as academics, keep the money and pay for the best college your kid can get into.
Is that pompous or in this case STUPID?
I don’t think I’m taking you out of context:
“The argument of where the kids play and how the kids in Suffern all want to wear the sweater has a lot of merit – I also think that Suffern H.S. is a quality academic school in comparison to the Bosco/Bergan Catholic/St. Suffern and Bosco’s top two lines are close in talent but Bosco has more depth”
Unless I’m wrong, the entire paragraph addresses the differences btw the possible schools and what goes into the decision making process. Ego,ecomonics and hockey are part of that. My point, is that hockey should not be a factor, especially if one can play somewhere else.
I’m not in politics, and am not taking you out of context, address my premise on the merits of the conclusion I came to from your paragraph above.
I don’t think you like someone pointing out to you that one of factors you use in determining your decision making is whether or not little Johnny sees the ice
But what do I know,I’m just STUPID.
“I also think that Suffern H.S. is a quality academic school” if the priority was for little Johnny to see the ice he wouldn’t be going to Suffern.
I agree with your conclusion.
Ginger-The fact that you (and probably your wife) spend what is probably a great deal of time, even thinking about how to make your child/children the best they can be is great.
It really is our job to do our best to create the best people under our control.
Ginger’s a guy?
Ugh, nevermind about that I always liked MaryAnne.
