Put your pencils down. The midterm exams are over and we’re back to a regular schedule. We’ve got a couple of decent games starting with Iona Prep and RCDS, which are both going well now. It’s going to be physical and should be competitive because the Gaels do get up for these crossovers.
Brewster and Yorktown are opposites in terms of style, and this one could be interesting unless the Huskers stop grinding and try going stride for stride with the section’s most prolific offense. Pearl River is going for a hat trick against Nyack/Tappan Zee, but we’ve all been told how difficult it is to beat an opponent three times in a season. Suffern isn’t going to have any problems against Ithaca, which has won five in a row since Mamaroneck went up and dropped the Little Red to 2-7 at the end of December.

reds should have no problem with IP 2night
*rcds
Correct, IF they are as good as they say they are
who is they? just wondering.
mamo bat ithaca 5-0. cant imagine what suffern will do to them…
beat*
I smell a KPV victory over LP. their due. Should b a good one.
Isn’t it “they’re due”... boy is this blog boring.. I am going to blame it on the few who seem to love the prep schools.. problem is nobody cares about the prep schools on this blog, which is why its so boring. Who cares about the Avon make-up team, and all of the various teams they have and how many are going to be in the NHL?? nobody!!! and nobody cares that you think suffern should play better teams, maybe suffern’s schedule isn’t the problem, maybe it the players on the other teams, who need to do things a little differently. I always found it ineresting when people/teams etc.. who have not accomplished anything, often ask why someone didn’t do better or how they would have done it better… next time why don’t you just do it.. but thanks for the advice Jack ass..
I believe it,s Jackass. One word no break, just saying
lol…
Postman. Weird post. Not sure who it’s directed at. Boring because every team in d1 except suffern is weak. So there’s no room for argument. Same stuff with Pelham and rye, they are top dogs in d2, nobody fears any of the teams from Brewster I A. There’s nothing to argue about. That being said postman. I’ll be shocked if suffern makes the championship state game. They’re not that great either.
Ha…”They’re not that great either.” unless you are a coach, player or ex player that has been one of the top 5 or so teams or players in the state.. How do you even make such a comment?? And if you are just a parent who hasn’t accomplished anything in hockey, thats even worse. Can you play better then them?
I think Eli made a comment about people like you… something about getting ready to play, he is a doer.. you are a talker who cant do, and possibly never were able to. With the growth of media there are a ton of people Mike Fran being the biggest, who love to talk about how people can be better at something that he cant do, and never could. Very similiar to the people on this blog who say suffern should be doing this, suffern should be playing this team.. if you are so good at it, why aren’t you the coach or AD for suffern??
Beat west genesee and massena then talk postman. Suffern is the best in section one by default. They are far from the best in the state and if history repeats itself again, they’ll lose miserably in the semis. Same routine for nearly 20 years.
And what ate you postman? A coach? A player? Why don’t you take all your angry energy and apply it to your job at Walmart, the kids clothing section is a mess!!!! Take some pride in your section will ya? Clown.
LOL… ok, a little excitement, but you’re easy to get going OK…. actually still on the fry machine, golden brown baby!!
Because the mail never stops…......
what team does “ok terrific ” root for?
...I can’t stand Mike Fran…bloviator.
Oh I root for east ramapo. Are they good this year?
Tension is in the air – could we talk to the AD and coach at Suffern to see if they went to wooden sticks maybe the rest of the section would follow their lead
you sound like a fan of Mamaroneck, or second choice etb
When does Iona go on their trip to play teams in Sweden?
Norway
Not sure
May be a spring league thing?
My thoughts on section 1 hockey, it is the best hockey we have in the area for public schools and we should enjoy it and forget about comparing it to other leagues. Very few players will make it to D-1 colleges or the NHL in the area, the two that I know in the area who have a shot skate out of the BIA (for you BIA haters) and they are Steve Santini and Joe Wegwerth. Most of the real elite players who can afford it or get some help end up in the Prep schools. But I will say I love section 1 hockey – it is exciting and yes I know Suffern right now is the best team – but you never know what can happen in a one game elimination in the playoffs.
Ok Terrific doesn’t seem to root for anyone. Against his nature? He just seems to like to stir up trouble. Hey, is Dougherty paying you to bring up page hits and blog traffic?
to Ok Terrific yes they lost to very good teams in up state but to only lose to them buy one goal is not bad and am telling u nowsuffern going to win this year state
brewster will beat yorktown 7 or 8 to 2 or 4 i will go with 7-3
3-2 iona after 1
3-2 prep end of 1 against rcds
4-4 after 2
7-5(en) final RCDS
RCDS went up 5-4 on an iona own goal..the defenseman nightmare happened..no opponent in your zone, attempted end around to your partner behind the net..but u score on yourself..game was over at that point..really a shame
Teams are evenly matched..lead changes all game
Iona D without Lipsky, and it shows..with ice cuts, Logerfo played 3/4 game, up and on D
Stopped by to catch the 2nd period of the game at RCDS. Two evenly matched teams that have more depth than an ETB or Brewser, but not the top end talent of those 2 Section One teams. 24 on RCDS stood out. The rest of the skaters on the two teams were solid, if not spectacular. I would put the two teams just behind ETB and Brewster and just ahead of New Ro and Mamo.
Brew-york updates?
Fanotgame they play 18 minute periods section 1 15 min periods correct? It seemed like it was a much faster paced game. It was evenly matched.
Logerfo stands out in every game..kid has gaborik like pickup speed..can dangle, and can shoot..with the right high level coaching, can play after high school
3-0 Suffern
Too bad lacrosse is his primary sport
I liked the 18 min periods. The RCDS ice is fast. I expected the pace to be faster than it was, though.
Ip- sort of like Somers Marasco a few years back.
KPV – LP updates?
york dominating 5-2 end of 2nd
5-0 end of first
LP won 5-2 with an open net. One of KPV’s defenseman was out for injury. LP coach got tossed and a LP and KPV player were tossed out too.
6-0 Mounties
How did Bi-Town do against SH/I?
Wow 5-2 town is suprising.Finish the job boys.would be a great win.
7-0 Suffern end of 2nd
The Iona V RCDS game was terrific ! Very evenly matched with fast paced back and forth action the entire game ! Clean game and absolutely great game to watch . Bad break for IONA—- but thats hockey !
iona definitely better than earlier in the season..and their only travel playing Dman has been out as of late
best team in chshl after st.ant’s
9-0 Suffern
definitely going to more rcds games
princeton day at rye country day monday at 5
greenwich at rye country day thursday at 5
good games
princeton day is 10-1-1, including wins over st.augustine, seton hall prep and bishop eustace (gordon conference teams)
Suffern can’t find a competitive game.
As for the playoffs, it is almost impossible for Suffern NOT to make it to the semi’s of the state at least. If they get knocked off before the championship game again, I’m thinking that the 1992 team sold their soul to the devil to win that state championship, and in return all other state contenders will lose in the semi’s in heartbreaking fashion. It just can’t happen again. I think they get to the championship this year.
Mamaroneck vs. Pelham tomorrow. Any chance Mamaroneck can play a tough game verse Pelham? I had my doubts vs. Rye and was wrong, so I am hopeful that Mamk can give Pelham a tough game.
Is Reilly skipping AC to play HS tomorrow?
Yorktown Final?
Whats fotgs fascination with that player?
10-0 Suffern (Final)
Rocket, I bet Mamaroneck plays Pelham tough, if they jump out on them early, if not it may be a long night.
Any final on the Yorktown game?
Just think Mamo vs. Pelham is a close game w/o Reilly playing.
5-4 Town
Brewster final town-5 brewster-4 . Brewster looked slow slow slow. I think the long lay off hurt them. As always they gave the puck to Joe and watched. Skill wise I thought Brewster should have handled them put the defense played as sloppy as you could be. Daly played a great 1st period and kept it to a 0-0 game. I dont like to blame refs on the outcomes of games but these two guys were a complete joke. Wegworth was held, hooked and in the last 2 minutes of the game actually tackled and the refs didnt call a thing. I think its a disgrace that just because a player is superior then others on the ice he shouldnt get any calls. Hes obviousely stronger then anyone on the ice so it doesnt look as bad when someone does something to him but as a hockey player its was obvious, I was kinda shocked they werent making any calls. They also missed a clear goal he scored in the 2nd period wegworth went top corner and it popped out but of course they missed it.. I dont understand how u can miss a goal when the net actually moves but whatever. Town played a tough grinding game and wore brewster out at times. Their passing around the net was too much for Brewster’s defense. The defense completly missed assignments and Daly had no shot on a majority of the goals. Brewster’s D also pinched way too much giving Town a number of off man rushes. Feel bad for Brewster as the Rye team was in the stands and was prob laughing that this was one of the teams that they needed to worry about in sectionals. The two teams that played physical with Brewster and grinded out the game beat them (pac and town). If Brewster wants to make any noise in sectionals they better clean up their defense.
yorktown won 5 – 4 wegwerth in almost all game
Mamo still missing their top two D-men. Going to be very tough for them to hang with Pelham
Does anyone know when either of them are going to return? they will be a better contender to make it deep in the playoffs with them playing
stopped to check out the brewster yorktown game tonight. it had it all from chanting chickens to wegwerth popin kids. not a bad comeback at the end either
any score on the rye game, anybody know who scored?
rye won 4 – 0 not impressed
Awkward, rye won 9-0
I play for rcds and I can tell you that we didnt play that good of a game of a game tonight. Also I saw some of you say you wanted to see us play more. Wensday night at rcds vs. kingswood oxford, it will be a good game.
Delete one of the “of game”s
all the excuses why brewster lost there is only one reason they lost they were out played and brewster over plays wegwerth and they where him out brewster needs to run a few lines they will go no where in playoffs like this.
Beprewster doesn’t have the most profilic offense in sec 1.I’d like to see how many they woukd score against suffern. That number is probably close to 0
every year seems to be a well-coached team. Kids always know where to go and what to do when they get there.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Brewster- yorktown game.
That KPV -LP was the game of the night for hockey lovers
Does anyone know if the journalist who writes these articles has a connection to Pelham? There seems to be a subtle, yet pervasive bias in many of the pieces he writes. Whether it’s a photo, reference, or endorsement, the championing is overt.
mike just calls it as he see’s it. and he believes pelham is the best in div 2 and will probably predict a pelham victory this wednesday. and that will be a legitament pick over rye although certainly not an upset if rye were to win.
I don’t see any mention in Mike’s piece above. But why shouldn’t he reference one of the strongest teams in the section? Conspiracy? No, and sort of a pathetic theory on your part.
Let me guess… ETB fan, Bertram?
Bertrand.
Ned Bigby has a big problem with your comment.
Calling Mike Dougherty a “journalist” is completely out of line.
He couldn’t write his way out of a paper bag. Rumor has it that he files a story every week from the Witz’ kitchen. He has nothing in common with the great sportswriters except for borderline alcoholism. If you are looking for real journalism, check the Syracuse hockey blog!
How did ClarksNorthSouthBoscoTown do yesterday?
Hey facts,
Ever since those “top 2 d men” have been out, mamk has played much better and are winning.
ned that was not nice in fact it was mean mike dedicates much time to this blog and provides great information for us section 1 viewers – be nice.
Ok Terrific – Mamo has won 5 out of last 6 with Danehy missing 2 games and Schiff missing all, so you partially correct. They are learning how to play without them and did a smart thing by taking one of their best skaters, who was playing on the third line, and put him back on D. This has also meant that the third line has been getting less ice time, which has allowed the first two lines to get more into the flow of the game.
In the end though, it will be very difficult for them to do anything wthout these two plyers. You win games from the goal on out and next to your goaltender, the D men are most vital to a teams success. Look no further than the Rangers this year to validate this point.
Lagerfo is one of those players who within a quality Junior program can develop to play at the College level. After seeing him in the defensive end of the ice I liked him there also. There are very few players this quick out of the hole. IP vs RCDS was fairly well match but clear IP has issue on Defense because except for #12 the rest have no gap control and RCDS forward where going by the rest of them like the IP Dmen were bolted to the ice.
I too am curious to see if #10 plays for Pelham tonight. With that being said let me start by stating that I root for the Pelicans and am very surprised at the way coach Witz is allowing this to play out. I recall a few years back he sat 2 players for missing a practice because of travel hockey. And then I hear that in what might be the only chance for payback from last years state semi they don’t show up with full squad? Has last years coach of the year gone soft? Hate to stir the pot but if this were ETB there would be 200 hundred comments bashing them.
I agree Brewster was outplayed, as i mentioned they looked sluggish and waited for Wegworth to do his thing. In this game and the Pac game they took it too him and nuetralized him. He still had a hat trick last night but if you take him out of the game as much as possible you win the game. I disagree they have the best offense in the league, they are one dimensional. They run into a strong defensive team in the playoffs they have no chance. Henderson and hamilton are good players but they feed off of Wegworth and cant create on their own like Wegs can. Cant go deep in the playoffs running two lines and a sloppy defense. Yea they have put up big numbers but against weak weak opponents.
Facts,
Mamaroencks D men are keeping it simple, something they have never done in the past and are focusing only on D. The D men that took their place are playing D… and thats it. The third line player that was moved to D, should have been one of their top 4 d men to begin with, but Mamk often falls in love with the flash and dash of individual talent on D…. and never reign them in.
If you think that having only two lines of offense is going to help Mamk, you are very wrong. Good teams will wear them down. And because some of Mamaronecks forwards on the first two lines don’t backcheck or play any sort of defense in their own zone…. I think Pelham will dismantle Mamaroneck and win. But hey, I thought Rye would win too and was happily wrong.
It is not a coincidence that since these injuries, mamaroneck is playing much better and winning games. Maybe they are realizing KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid.
As for NED,
I can’t tell if you are ripping Mike, or teasing him. Watch it, you don’t want to get banned or else there goes your writing career that your mom likes to brag about. I think you may have stumbled on a new name for Combotown…. Lets morph ours together and now call them …....
COMBOSCOTOWN !!!!!!! I think that is a winner.
congrats to new ro’s kenny mclean on his hat trick. hardest working kid out there. remember baseball starts in 6 weeks
Please ned be quie..We’re lucky to have this blog.Seriously, if you don’t wanna chat hockey please stop posting
sec1 hockey
I’m sure Ned was goofing. You can take it easy. I’m fairly sure Mike is not going to disband the blog. Ned is one of the posters that I look forward to reading.
Theres a huge difference between “travel hockey” and junior A. That might be the explanation
The comments about Wegwerth not getting any calls to go his way last night is curious. If they called his multiple, blatant late hits (hitting a player 5 seconds after he has passed the puck, and not even beginning to move toward the player until the puck is already gone), he’d have had at least five penalties. They let him get away with a ton last night. He is certainly a very dangerous player with great strength and a laser shot, but he was taking liberties last night and the refs turned a blind eye. By the way, the no-goal on his shot, while tough to gauge from the stands, was not an obvious bad call. I did not see Brewster complain, and at least one player I spoke to who had a great view said it was definitely not a goal.
Rocket fuel-thanks for letting me know.I know you guys like to goof off sometimes and he is a contributor peace
Playing Junior A is a rough and tumble game. Hard hits are a part of it, and rarely do those refs call borderline penalties. So when a kid is playing at that level, with that kind of physicality, it is hard to turn it off and make sure you don’t go anywhere near a persons head. Westchester refs (most of them) call it kinda tight, and many hard clean hits are called penalties…. especially when there is a mismatch in talent. I did not see the game, but am not surprised that wegworth played a very very physical game.
5 seconds after a player got rid of the puck? I find that hard to believe. I am kinda thinking this is a parent that was upset to seee his son get his clock cleaned by a superior talent. And you know what? It is difficult to watch your kid get manhandled by a better more physical player. Your caveman instinct is to climb over the boards and protect your kid… but we all know that would be frowned upon.
Thanks Fuel.
Some people are a bit sensitive.
Dougherty gets enough hate mail and threats, someone needs to keep it light around here.
Really? Damnnn.
The only time I disagree with him is when he touts the wrong Alarm song.
The Stand by The Alarm is their best song in my opinion.
-Peace and Love, Peace and Love
I have watched more hockey in my life than I care to admit, so I know obvious late hits when I see them. And no, my son was not getting manhandled or outplayed on the ice. Perhaps these late hits are okay in Junior A. I cannot speak to that. In Section 1 ice hockey, few players get away with it the way Wegwerth was last night. He is a heck of a player, but the refs should have called him the same way they call everyone else. When a player starts to skate at a player when the puck is already gone, that is not finishing a check. I don’t blame him for doing it. If the refs are not going to call it, you might as well take advantage of what they give you and see if you can intimidate the other team’s players (although I don’t think Yorktown was intimidated by him last night).
I love physical hard hitting games. Dont see many at the high school level anymore.
Rocket
You are correct that it will be tough for Mamo to hang with Pelham playing prmarily two lines. However, aside from when playing against Pelham and Suffern, this strategy works out quite well because most Section 1 teams lack depth. It certainly worked out well against Rye where the 3rd line only saw a couple of strategic shifts – ie. offensive zone – each period.
Perhaps if Chap had his best players on the ice more often they would have beat teams such as Scarsdale and New Ro earler in the year? Instead he just rolled three lines trying to “build” depth. But guess what – the depth he had last year is not there this year and maybe he has recently resigned himself to this fact? We’ll see….
Ref got it all wrong at L/P-KPV game last night with only 3 minutes left in the game, L/P player should not have been tossed, if anything minor at the very least, dirty play by KPV
While we are on the topic – no so at last weeks L/P-Mahopac game – Mahopac parents & players continue to clap & mock opposing player in the lobby after the game, I guess they can’t tell L/P players from their own, there was no Mahopac player exiting before or after the L/P player, you all know who you are….no class….the L/P parents cheered for their players after their first league win for the same reason those claim Mahopac did, the only difference is the L/P parents refrained and showed respect for the Mahopac players when they exited or else you would have already heard and read about it.
Facts. Dead wrong. First and second lines were terrible the first half of the year. To blame it on anyone else besides themselves is flat out stupid. First and second lines got no playing time last year. THAT is why they stunk it up the first half. Let’s see what first and second line does vs Pelham. Btw. The reason you beat rye was due to defense and goaltending. Not stroller offensive output. One of the three goals was by a defenseman.
OK
first off, you can have your opinion, and I can have mine. Just because we don’t agree doesn’t mean either of our opinions is stupid. Fact is fact, the third line was playing an equal amt to the first two lines earlier. Could that be why they struggledmaybe? Who know? Second, the Rye game was a total team effort. There were few quality scoring chances for Rye, and that was due to soild play bythe D and responsible defensive play by the forwards. The goaltending was there to thwart Rye on the few opps they did generate. Third – you are wrong on the goal scorers in the Rye game. Goals scored by Bellis, Mullaney and Ferguson – ALL FORWARDS!!! Lastly – I agree with you, they will probably struggle to keep it a game vs. Pelham. Pelham is a very deep team that has played plenty of quality opposition – unlike Rye.no sure why this first part of the above crossed out?
marcel woods …....... 10 will play tonight so that should take care of your curiousity issues. questioning whether witz is getting soft is not your concern; its always the coaches call. taking him to task when you don’t know all the facts is really sad. gee …...... we are so blessed you are a pelham fan; if you weren’t, witz would need to wear armor to the rink.
I think mike crosses off all stupid points.
Pelham has depth because the coach knows you can’t do squat in the long run with two mediocre offensive lines, which is what mamk has. But let’s see what happens tonight. Let’s see if first and second line score any goals. For a school of mamks depth of skaters to not develop a third line is a joke. Schools that do that are usually small schools who struggle with numbers.
the officials need to call better games, its getting worse not better. this needs to be addressed before the playoffs begin or this blog will be flooded.
Watching the L/P vs JFK yesterday prior to the Fox Lane vs Rye Town game last night made me ill. A 2 handed swing by the L/P player on the goaltender followed by a cross check to the head from the JFK player, and the parents yelling that there should be no penalty, or only a minor penalty, is why hockey has become what it is. No control by parents reflects in the no control of their children, you should be proud.
Blaming refs, let your children be responsible and accountable stop making excuses, extremely poor display by the parents of those teams.
0-0 end of 1. Pel mamk game
@fanogsports u r wrong mahopac was clapping for their players because four of their players got their first goal or assist there was no glory in beating lp the lp parents misread what they saw.
Final score 6-0 Pelham. Shots 36-11 Pelham. After first period Mamo had total of only 4 or 5 shots.
Ok – re: cross out, it happened immediately after I posted, so I dont think your theory is correct. If it was, 3/4 of the nonsense that you spew on on this site would be purged
everybody poking at wegwerth, late hits, one man show, blah blah blah, gues what? kids only a sophmore, got 2 more years around this league. All you haters better check yourself. just sayin…
Im a huge fan of the kid and know him personally so im not a hater. However, he has no help around him and he tries to do too much at times. Yea he is a sophmore and you wont see him after this year becasue he is going to play juniors or go to a prep school. He wont get any better playing in this area against this competition. You can see he is toying with kids at times and at this age you will develop bad habits. For his sake he needs to go off and play with equal competition so he can make the best of his talent and go play D1 someplece. Hockeydad needs to stop crying about late hits, its hockey not figure skating
Section 1 Hockey, so your point is that it’s hockey, so there are no rules and anything goes? It’s hockey not figure skating, so don’t complain if a kid hits high? It’s hockey, not figure skating, so don’t complain when a kid uses his stick as a weapon? It’s hockey not figure skating, so don’t complain when a kid hits from behind? Late hits are illegal under the rules. End of discussion. If you think he did not make multiple late hits in the Yorktown game, then just explain why the hits were legal. “It’s hockey, not figure skating,” is not a legitimate argument or point.
haha oh now he used his stick as a weapon? I saw the entire game and all he did was finish his hits like a normal game would consist of. These kids have no idea what college and junior hockey is all about. All of these kids want to make the BIG hit and make the crowd go nuts but god forbid someone finishes a check in the corner. AND Hockey Dad is was so very obvious to see that town players were taking runs at him the entire game. The kid was freakin tackled in the last minute and the refs didnt call a thing. The kid was just playing hockey like its supposed to be played. Come on, if he really hit a kid from behind the kid would never get up. Great support from the Ytown kids too, there was about 10 people in their stands compared to brewster… go back and wait for lax season to start so the parents can complain about missed calls again and again
Section 1 Hockey, you obviously did not understand a word I said, or the point I was making. If you think that the size of the Yorktown crowd is relevant to the point under discussion, so be it. I don’t think we are going to get anywhere, so we’ll just disagree on what constitutes a late hit and leave it at that.
Hanson Bros. don’t know what game you were watching, your analysis dead wrong, at least report it correctly, parents were correct. Slapper, I was there I know what I witnessed, you obviously are biased.
