NYSSWA hockey rankings
It was a rough week for Section 1 on these lists, everybody slid back to the pack. The loss to Massena cost Suffern a couple of notches, but it won’t be long now until any debate is settled on the ice. Don’t forget to check out the New York State Sportswriters Association website.

Last nite, Ogdensburg (who Rye travels to play in a few weeks) knocked off Salmon (who Pelham travels to play in a few weeks). Ogdensburg may not be ranked #1 in NYS for DII like Salmon was, but they are a solid test for the Garnets.
The Syracuse blog infers that Salmon is a slower, grinding team. I think the team to beat in DII might be that quick Willy East team that knocked off Pelham and gave Suffern a bit of a scare in the Suffern tourney. Whoever comes out of Section One DII will face in their state semi the winner of the Buffalo/Rochester regional. Lots of solid Rochester and Buffalo teams (just look at the DII rankings above with all the Section 5 and 6 teams) , but I am guessing it will be Willy East.
No totally dominant DII team like last year’s undefeated Caz and the previous New Hartford teams. So, if either Rye or Pelham emerge as DII champs (likely, but not certain) they both have the depth and experiece to win states this year.
Every dog has its day. Like Rye looked past Mamaroneck last week, Salmon looked past an ogsdenburg squad. Salmon out shot them 34-24. A good game for Rye to play not a really tough one though.
Did play Suffern pretty tightly. Pelham and Williamsville east was a good match, keep in mind Pelham had no Reilly or Landis in that 2-0 loss
I did not see Willy East play Suffern. But, I did see the Willy East/Pelham match the previous nite. That game started way too late for such an elite match up. Like 10 PM, or so. Still, Willy East was just off a 7 hr bus ride and looked much faster than Pelham. They had a kid (#8, I think) who was skating around everyone.
MW quietly having a nice season. They were no match for Suffern in the regular season tilt and probably won’t be much better come state playoff time. But, what if the Stephanick kid was able to play for them? He has 30 points as a HS senior playing for Hitmen in the Eastern. To put that in perspective , Pelham’s Reilly has 2 points playing in the same junior league and Reilly’s teammate Prunesti also has 30 points.
The Willy East/Pelham game was played in the worst atmosphere possible. Actually the only way it could have been any worse was if the game was played at Ebersole or Murrays. Willy East has a great team again this year but after the way the state semi game ended last year these 2 teams deserved better for their rematch. 17 and 8 have the goods for Willy East and they might have one of the top goalies in the state. Landis and Reilly would have been a factor in that game but does that lock Pelham in for the W????
Willy East should start booking their rooms for Utica.
I have no idea where you get the impression fotg that Pelham has a “slow” team. In reference to the Williamsville East loss the stats are on the internet for all to see. Pelham out shot W.E. 25-19 without two major players. So if as you say W.E. looked faster it certainly didnt matter in the game. If Pelham was slow they would be 5-9 against that schedule they play and not 9-5 as they are. The only team that made Pelham look slow or bad this year was Suffern and they do that to everyone. and if #8 was “skating around everyone” you shouldve told him to shoot as 19 shots against Pelham without Reilly and Landis is not so good
Reilly and Landis 1st Team All State last year as juniors…I say they are difference makers
Reilly was out for a lot of games for the Applecore team due to injury, wasn’t he? Not really a good comparison with Prunesti, who is out of high school and only plays Applecore.
Fotg, Speed only matters on a larger ice sheet like West Point which is Olympic size. At the bandbox in Rye it doesnt matter at all. Rye is a smaller surface no place to hide
I understand that WestGenny defeated Suffern (in first game of the season ) and is ranked no.1 in the state but their schedule pales in comparison to some of the other top teams, even teams in Sec 1. Apparently there are many who feel the same way. WG used to travel to NorthCountry and Rochester for tournaments but have not in recent years. Maybe the economy has taken a toll on their school district. I would be curious to know if Suffern, Mamk, or MW has invited WG downstate to play. I don’t know why they wouldn’t. From my recollection they have not played south of Albany, or not in many years. From experience, I know it is much more difficult to travel 6, 7 plus hours, stay in a hotel, play in an unfamiliar setting and be expected to be at your best when you are 16 or 17 yrs old. I guess that is what makes champions, those that can overcome.
To speed kills- Agree a physical team like Pelham has an advantage over a speed team like Rye at Playland. One reason why I would like to see a Rye/Pelham final over a Rye/Pelham semi, even if Rye hosted it.
To Pelham- The Pelicans are a very physical, smart, disciplined, experienced, deep and well coached bunch. I would not include speed as one of the attributes that separates them from the pack of state title contenders.
To ?- I didn’t mean to compare the HS senior to the already graduated Section One player. Was just pointing out that MW would be a real force with Stephanick as he is a few steps above Reilly, who himself is widely considered a tippy top forward for Section One. The MW senior is averageing about a point agame in the Eastern. Reilly about a point every 10 games played. No shame in that. Both are playing against men. The MW kid has already committed to DI Quinnipiac.
