It’s kind of a quiet day for hockey, so everyone can stay home and watch the Pro Bowl. Or not. I’m taking a Sunday off for a change, so if you’re out there watching a game, leave us a score.
There doesn’t appear to be a lot of upset potential outside of maybe Somers/North Salem throwing a scare into Fox Lane. I know Yorktown is keep games close, but I bet Mahopac is anxious to start another winning streak. Carmel and Kennedy/Putnam Valley is probably the most competitive game up at Brewster tonight.
Update: I forgot about the White Plains-Fordham Prep makeup. That is always a one-goal affair, and it’s been a while since the Tigers have come out on top.
The schedule
White Plains vs. Fordham Prep, 7:30 p.m. at Murray’s
Mahopac vs. Yorktown, 4:30 p.m. at Brewster
New Rochelle vs. Byram Hills, 6:20 p.m. at Brewster
Kennedy/Putnam Valley vs. Carmel, 8 p.m. at Brewster
Fox Lane vs. Somers/North Salem, 8:10 p.m. at Brewster
Nyack/Tappan Zee vs. Clarkstown, 5:30 p.m. at Palisades
Iona Prep vs. Stepinac, 8 p.m. at Ice Hutch

D2 Playoffs – who is still yet to qualify?
I think my raiders are locked into the 8-9 game. Lohud, can you confirm?
Mike enjoy your day off.
4 Rockland highschools will be matched in the Clarkstown – NTZ game. The big C should be a solid favorite, but should be wary. Last year a weaker NTZ took a stronger C-North team to overtime.
On a side note, no two Rockland team game has been covered by the Journal News this year. In fairness to Mike, he’s the only hockey reporter and NTZ and Clarkstown did get a reporter for there matches aginst New Rochelle and at the White Plains tournament, respectively, and Suffern always gets the coverage it deserves. In addittion, Mike did a stop by at the last Clarkstown-North Rockland match enroute to the Suffern-Bosco game.
I’ll just pass along that these Clarkstown-North Rockland or Pearl River-NTZ contests are usually competitive and have meanng for the kids. These are the games that should be given coverage consideration, as they used to be regularly. The Patch web-service does a decent job filling in, but nothing beats an old fashion Newspaper story.
And I checked out the Pearl River goalie for a little while the other night at the urging of the North Rockland coaches after I filed the Suffern story. Kind of like that kid.
Looking at the shot differential for the PR- North Rock game the PR goalie stood on his head in a 2-1 loss. Last week “Raiderfan” also reported his role in PRs upset of Scarsdale.
PR goalie played very, very well against us. I think we outshot them 2-1 in the game. He was the difference for sure.
For what its worth I am now actually going to root for Rye and Pelham the rest of the regular season in hopes that they beat the unfair seeding system and both finish 1 and 2 in DII. I looked at Lohuds standings today its pretty neat as he has up to date seedings for both DI and DII. Rye is number 2 right now and Pelham miraculously is number 5 with the brutal schedule they have
Al, I decided to compile a list of the teams that have been covered:
Mamaroneck X6, Rye X3 , Suffern X5, White Plains X4 , Stepinac, Iona X3, Fordham, Pelham X5, RCDS, Harvey, NewRo X3, K/PV X2, Brewster X2, Mahopac, John Jay X2, Carmel, S/NS, L/PX3, Scarsdale and N/TZ.
Seems like Mike’s doing a great job giving the attention to the teams that deserve it: Suffern, Mamk, Rye, Pelham, and WP. The only notable teams that haven’t been covered yet are EB, Mt.P, Clarkstown, and FL. And although it would be nice to see every team get a story throughout the year, we know that doesn’t make sense for the JN. Keep on doing a great job Mike!
fan…I agree, Mike is doing a great job. One man cannot possibly cover every team.
I was speaking from the perspective that not to many years ago the Journal News once had a separate edition called the Rockland-Journal News. A staple of the RJN was fairly extensive coverage of local….as in Rockland….high school sports. Pretty much every HS sports team could expect to receive one game covered. I also remember the weekly Rockland HS hockey report.
I do understand what has happened to the Newspaper business model over the last couple of years, so todays change and consolidation is understandable. It will never be as it once was. (BTW, I still pay for a JN subscription.)
But hey, I still believe that the JN (and Mike) cares a litttle about Rockland.
With Mikes limited resources I’d recommend that in addittion to his usual Suffern coverage, which they have earned and deserved, that he maximize “other” Rockland coverage at least once a year with a hockey game featuring 2 Rockland teams that are not Suffern.
Any Suffern game against another Rockland opponent is a predictable outcome and always end up with Suffern as the main story. The NTZ game against New Rochelle was also predictable and more of a New Rochelle and Rich Prunesti story.
However, a Clarkstown – North Rockland, or a NTZ – Pearl River are good games which would properly spotlight these teams.
Clarkstown is up 1-0 on NTZ after two on a goal by vanderlinden with 37 seconds left in the second. NTZ goalie is playing great. Shots 32-7 Clarkstown.
Nine game win streak, three goalies giving up around 1.5 goals a game and radio silence.
At game..will update
0-0 after 1..all ip..step barely any shots..little lipsky in net for ip..step goalie phenomenal
Byram hills beat new rochelle 4-2? Was prunesti there? Holy cow! Good luck vs mamaroneck on Tuesday.
Ip 4, step 1
Barry playing 2nd half of game
Step scored on hanger breakaway pass down 4-0
If its true BH beat New Ro thats all you need to know about the seeidng process. New Ro is 4th in seeding in D I with an 11-2 record
Prunesti was there. Looked tired but I would look tired too if Eric Basmajian was guarding me all night. BH boys looked good most of the game-stayed out of the penalty box early and kept their sticks in passing lanes to disrupt New Ro a little bit. BH’s goalie Josh Sirota was great. A great win for BH.
You can never go by scores but if BH beat New Ro 4-2 with Prunesti and Mt P demolished BH 8-1,then how good is Mt P ? New Ro could have their hands full against Mt P with Marinelli on defense, who is just as good as Basmajian if not better.
Clarkstown beat NTZ 3-2.
Prunesti was there but didn’t get much ice time. Why was that?
There’s a reason you can’t go by scores. BH was missing some players against MtPl. No excuses, just a fact. The 1st game could have gone either way. Mt Pl is a good team because of their depth. There are no all stars on the Ice Cats.
And, if you think Marinelli can stop Prunesti the way Basmajian did tonight, all I have to say is good luck. I am looking forward to that matchup.
Congrats to the Byram Hills players who pulled off the upset tonight.
Prunesti got a regular shift and played the PP. Stop making up stories.
ip 9, step 1
didn’t step lose to wp by 2, lose to clarkstown by 1 and tie fordham?
step goalie in white pads must’ve committed 4 robberies…pretty good goaltender…24 on step is good (doesn’t belong there)...reminds me of a mini-rocco
good game for ip going into chaminade game tomorrow (need the 2 points)...they actually can beat cham same way as tonight, too…all of ip healthy
st. ant’s just plowed through farrell tonight 8-1 (looks like st. a’s coach finally called upon all his jr. players for the home stretch..)
fp-wp score?
This loss just shows the NewRo is a one man band, which we already knew anyway. If you eliminate Prunesti, which is difficult to do, you will handle NewRo easily. The only problem is that Basmajin is one of maybe 4 defensemen who can shut him down.
Pac, K/PV, & Fox Lane Scores ?
North rockland beat New Ro..enough said and the great one played
bh goalie played game of his life.pru played at least half the game. new ro d-men very weak at keeping the crease clear. can’t wait till wednesday
Dubset over fordham 6-1. Dan Broderick had 2 goals and so did Drew Sobo
Was Mensi the Step goalie?
pac 4 ytown 1
pac 2- yktwn 1
byram 4 – NR 2
Somers/NS 5 – Fox La 2
JFK/PV 2 – Carmel 0
Foxes went down 5-2 to somers/ns, JFK/ pv over Carmel 2-0
MW 9 – BURKE 0
icehole : Lanerno #35 was in goal for Stepinac last niight . He is a very good goalie . Outstanding for a period and a half . Iona eventually wore him down but he is good….
I don’t know why prunesti look so exhausted, he has played multiple games before. I guess that is why Tozzo did not play him as much as he normally does. Give Byram goalie big credit and the Byram Coaches came up with a swarming defense that really prevented Prunesti from getting clear shots. Would have loved to see some of New Ro’s other players pick up the slack. Bad Game for New Ro.
CSHL Fan—I believe Reagen’s brother is the goalie at Brockport St.
I watched the Iona Step game, sorry Step has really fallen off they are very weak. pretty average except the Reagan kid hes their best player. New Rochelles 11-2 record going into that game against Byram last night tells you about their schedule
like New Rochelle another highly seeded team with a weaker schedlue lost last night. Fox Lane lost to Somers/NS. Fox Lane was seeded 1st and what SNS 12th? You cannot do anything about it but the system is ridiculous for both D I and D II teams
The attempt, at least, to bring back the power league structure has to be made in the offseason.
Post- Agree. The hockey ADs need to push harder for this.
Fox Lane plays New Ro on Wednesday, Feb 1 as make up from earlier cancellation. Both teams are coming off of bad losses. Who do you think is favored?
I’m anti-power league. At most have “one” power league (Suffern, Mamo, White Plains, Pelham, Rye).
SH/I, Yorktown, L/P all strong teams last year, would’ve been candidates for league 1 or 2 this year, and they really aren’t power teams this year. Perhaps 2 of these teams are amongst the weakest in the section.
For most teams, last year is not necessarily a predictor of this year.
Agree Al. Geo leagues with One 5 team power league. 8 League games (home and home). That leaves 12 slots for non league matches. Playland has no juice this season, as almost every game (except Pelham) was a blowout midway thru the first.
I can live with that. One power league that plays each other twice. The rest can have geographic. Problem is this. Let’s say a team like mahopac beats wp and mamaroneck during regular season non league games. Would mahopac, who is not in the power league have any chance to be seeded higher than wp or mamk.
In other words would the power league teams automatically be the highest seeds regardless of the seasons they all have?
As long as non power league teams can have a chance to be a higher seed than a power league team, I’d be on board with it.
I would go with six in the power league rather than five. This way you have some flexibility for teams to come and go with the ebb and flow of good players through their system making them good teams for a couple of years. Suffern, Mamk, Rye, & Pelham would be there every year, and hopefully WP’s run at or near the top will last more than a few years, but only time will tell (they have only been included in the discussion with the “big boys” for 3-4 years now).
With six teams you have a nice round 10 league games, most of which would be against teams you would schedule anyway. Suffern, for example, already plays WP, Mamk, & Pelham twice each. Replace their four league games with two against Rye and two against Team #6 and you have only made their schedule better. With six teams, you have space for the annual mainstays (Suff/Mamk/Pelham/Rye), the teams that are at or near the top for a year or two at a time (i.e. LP last year), and teams that have a little bit longer of a stay at the top who may or may not fade off a bit and drop a level or two after a handful of years (like CN or Mahopac in the early 2000’s or WP currently, although the verdict is still out on whether WP will fade back or not after a few years).
If you did this, you would have to have a committee decide who stays and who goes from the power league, which may be the sticky spot. SOmebody will always feel like they got hosed by the committee. As Al mentioned, last year is not necessarily a predictor of this year, however most teams don’t come out of the blue with a great season. You can tell the year before based on who is graduating, who is not, and how well they did whether they will be near the top or near the bottom of the section.
For those not in the power league, you have a Western Conference (Teams playing at SOR, Palisades, and WSA), a Southern Conference (Ice Hutch, Playland, Ebersole, Hommocks) and a Northern Conference (BIA & Trinity-Pawling). Unfortunately, that leaves you with 12 in the north, and 8 apiece in the west & south (minus whoever is in the power leagues). Since the safe assumption would be that at least three southern and one western team would always be in the power league, you may have to put some brewster teams into the southern conference to even things out a bit (maybe BH, FL, and HG).
Unfortunately, this is no different than all of us talking about how great it would be if it stopped snowing every other day. We can pine away for it all we want, but the chances of it happening are seemingly remote.
Would White Plains even want to be in a power league?
My guess is that they would not.
If it’s Tuesday, it’s a snow day™.
if rye were in a power league with the teams mentioned oh man they would get crushed and be a below 500 team in league standings losses to suff, mamo,wp, and maybe 1 win against pelham MAYYYYBBBBEEEEE
hockey puck-
I’m not so sure about that. I don’t think they would be at the top of the standings this year, but they played pretty close games against Mamk & Pelham and I don’t think it would be a stretch to say they could have split games with both those teams this year if they played home-and-homes. Same goes for a home-and-home with WP. The only one who they would stand a very small chance of stealing a win from would be Suffern, but then again, it seems like most teams across NYS (never mind section 1) are in that same boat.
Only way Rye steals a game against Suffern is if someone steals the team bus.
