It’s good to see Mamaroneck and Rye back on the ice, still basking in the glow of prosperity. Both are coming in off good wins. And you learn a lot about teams when things are going well and they face a real test. Will they be complacent? Will they be ruthless?
Check for updates on the LoHud Hockey Twitter page.
It will be interesting to see how Pelham comes back, too, after getting some time off.

Dont see any chirping on RCDS they must have lost anyone know the score?
Suffern is #1 and all alone by a long shot. Just look at the shots on goal the last few Games .
Suffern 59 Ithaca 14
Suffern 37 Iona 14
Suffern 49 something to WP 6
Not only is Suffern outstanding offensively ; no one can mount any offense against the mounties. They are truly a great team …..The worst thing ( & best thing for Suffern) that ever happened to teams in Westchester / Hudson Valley/ NY state is Bosco knocking the mounties off…..No mercy from them now….......
bosco knocking them off did absolutely nothing, they were good before and they are still good now, had they beaten bosco that would have just been more proof they are an awesome team. Dont fall for that shit they are dominating teams because they are better, not because bosco beat them.
fool : appropriate monicker for you .
the only downside of this season for Suffern is their expectations are now built so high that anything other than a state championship will be seen as a disappointment. That would be too bad for such a fine team and will be a cross to bear throughout the playoffs. This was the case with Mam’k’s repeating state championship baseball team and a sound thrashing mid-season by a team from upstate got them back on track. Maybe the Bosco loss can do that for Suffern.
Any score on RCDS last night?
Mamaroneck is winning out! Prediction about tonights Game. 8-4 Mamaroneck, 3 Goals from Hagan, Chap gets all 8 Assists. Chap=Best set up man in Section 1 History! Go Tigers!
Totally agree Billy B. Well said…
Dat Dude…..not best in Section 1 History, would have to disagree and say that Rui was up there along with a couple of others!
Hockey Mom
Sometimes I think Mike may have alternate personas used to stimulate the conversations.
Either that or there is a lot of caffeine in the coffee in Mamaroneck these days.
Maybe its just youthful exuberance ))))))))))))
Should be a good game tonight.
12-3 Brunswick over RCDS
12-3
I did not see it reported anywhere.
Pelham knocked off Bethlehem this afternoon 3-1. Were in control the whole way
How the he’ll did WP get lambasted like that? Undisciplined and severely outplayed. Mamaroneck is the only team with the chutzpah to even give suffern any competition. WP was intimidated big time.
Suffern might have a state champion on their hands if they don’t choke again. Maybe they should ask chap how to win it all as mamk baseball has two.
suffern is deep but bushleaugh recruting might have something
to do with that
Most of the kids are home grown, though right? Other than 2 kids, who else got full rides?
greely – pearl river score?
rye mamo score?
rye/mamk score?
Mamo 1-0 afte 1.
Mamo 2-0 after 2
Fox Lane over SH/I 4-1
4 minutes left
1 minute left
Won`t lose to another small school at home
Mamo wins 4-2
After watching tonight s game it looks as though Mamaroneck is not as explosive offensively as they have been. They still are the only team in d1 that can at least challenge Suffern in sectionals. Mamaroneck look confused with Rye early and eventually took over the game. I see Pelham as the clear best d2 team. With the win today that makes them 7-6-1 and with that schedule that is pretty impressive. If they had a normal schedule and was not scheduling teams like Suffern twice they have grabbed the number 1 seed, but after watching them the value was in fact in their schedule.
RCDS lost 12 to 3 last night
Tough year for BH.
Can pelham end up being in the top three with all the points and everything.? Or are they definitely out?
Sports Guy-
Depending on what the other D2 teams do down the stretch, Pelham can definitely end up in the top 3, although It seems unlikely. Best case scenario, I see Pelham getting 30 additional points in the last 7 games, although 25 is probably a more realistic number. Suppose they do get 30 more points down the stretch, which would mean going 5-2, with losses to Suffern and either Massena or Slamon River, and then their index would become 3.5 exactly, which would currently put them behind Rye, FL, and JJ. I think they will end up as the 3 or 4 seed. I don’t see them overtaking FL at #2, who is playing a really weak schedule from here on in, and I expect Rye to hold tight to the #1 spot. Overtaking Jay is possible, but unlikely, as Jay only has 1 tough game against Mahopac remianing.
Alright thanks fan, for pelham to meet rye at west point they would need to be in the two or three spot right? If there are no major upsets it would be Pelham vs Rye in the semis wile JJ and FL would match up in the other semi right?
In an unrelated topic, think of how many more students would go to to the sectional games if the tournament did not fall the week of February break. The teams work so hard to get there and then half the student body is unable to go to the games because of break vacations. I just think it’s a bad time. Maybe it’s just me. Idk.
Thanks fan.
Good game at Hommocks tonite. The difference were special teams. 5 on 5, the score was 1 to 1. Shots were pretty even 28 to 23 in favor of Mamo. Rye scored on a 5-3 pp, Mamo on 2 regular pp and the gamewinner in the last 3 minutes was a shorty by Hagan after the Rye dmen caught out far too long on their shift. Thought Rix played well, despite Rye giving up 4 goals for the first time this season. The more I look at Pelham and Rye, the more confirmation I get that they are dead even. Hope the seedings let them have a chance at a West Point finals clash.
Sportsguy-
Right and thats the way it looks like its going to play out. I think Pelham is going to inevitably meet Rye in the semis as a 4 seed.
Wow,
Was on the Bwick hockey web site
As it stands right now, Rye & Pelham are already on opposite sides of the bracket. After tonight’s games, Rye is the #2 seed and Pelham #4 (if the season ended today). Fox Lane is #1 and JJ is #3 which would mean FL-Pelham and Rye-JJ in the semis. Now, obviously things will change based on wins/losses, and opponents records going above and below .500 and .750, but here’s the thing. I’m not sure Rye is a lock for the #1 seed. Their remaining games are against RTH, Ossining, Thousand Islands, Ogdensburg, and RCDS. The only one of those five teams that is currently over .500 is Ogdensbug at 8-7. Now, that means that Rye has a better than average shot at winning out, but they have a very good shot at getting no bonus points for those five wins. Ossining & RCDS have already clinched losing seasons and Thousand Islands is four games under. RTH is one game under with 7 to play and in looking at their schedule, it may be tough for them to get to .500. Ogdensburg is one game over .500 and plays in a tough section (Section 10), and if they are teetering around .500, a loss to Rye could put them over the edge. So while Rye would get the win, they would eliminate the bonus points value for that team.
FL on the other hand has 8 games to go, and from the looks of their schedule, a 6-2 record for the rest of the season looks entirely doable. And since they still have games against NewRo, JJ, & KPV, they are due some bonus points.
It is so difficult to predict where everyone will be by season’s end.
Not a very good system for determining playoff brackets. If the Section wants buzz at West Point, they need to have a system that protects against one side of a playoff bracket being loaded and the finals being a blowout. Last year Rye played Yorktown in the finals. Now I know the Huskers were on an emotional mission for a fallen teammate last season, but the three best (by a pretty good margin) DII teams last season (Rye, SHI and Pelham) were all on one side of the bracket. And Fox Lane with their goalie, arguably the #4 DII team, was also on the same side as the big 3. The only contender on the other side of the bracket was Jay.
It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me to continue on with the inexact formula which rewards play against easier opponents. Rye got one point playing DI state ranked Mamo even for almost the whole game and will get 4 points when they met Ossining in a conference match. Rye’s only 3 losses this year were 1 or 2 goal games against state ranked teams. And yet, they might not be a #1 seed, even if they win out. Pelham might end the regular season as a top 5 team in the state and be a 4 seed??? Where is the logic in that?
More bad news for you fanotgame. Cortland-Homer lost to Ithaca last night, dropping their record to 6-7 so Rye & Pelham (th eonly two from the section to play them) each lost a bonus point dropping Rye into a tie (index-wise) with John Jay for second place.
The discussion is really heating up. After last nights game in my thinking Pelham is the best DII team. looking at the schedules if Pelham navigates past SHI and EB that would give them wins against every major DII team in the section. Add to that their schedule and the wins over some strong DI teams they should be seeded first. The system is flawed that allows teams that are ahead of Pelham based on their schedules. Theres nothing that can be done about it obviously but it looks as though the schedule can be manipulated to an advantage by teams who can schedule a bunch of W`s in non leagu games in order to push their index up for protection during playoff time. Pelham I am certain knew the consequences before and probably felt the tougher schedule benefits out weigh seeding position. Its still grossly unfair but thats the way it is. FOTG. You are very good with analysis Looking at the Rye Pelham thing and common opponents they have played 8 games against common opponents. Pelham is 5-2-1 Rye is 6-2. Pelhams goals against 18 goals for 28. Rye goals against 15 goals for 28. Thats close. Now I am not counting Mamaroneck win over Pelham early on and I m not counting Pelhams win over Rye. FOTG are you surprised that going into the season the thought was Ryes defense and goaltending was supposed to be better than Pelham and its quite close, and Pelhams offense was supposed to be past Rye but thats close also? My take on it is that these two teams are pretty sophisicated in their plan and are basically controlling what they do and how they play with precision. Pelhams team play is so situational and they stay in every game and are so consistent with the way they play. Rye looks as though they cannot generate goals but they do and they too stay right in every game. Its a shame that these two do not have a slam dunk meeting at the end. It will be fun to discuss before and after that meeting if it every happens. I looked at both rosters and Pelham returns every single player. I think they are a strong team now hate to see them next year.
Yes. Ithaca another really good team. Thats a non league game for Cortland Homer?? If so its more of how this system stinks as Cortland Homer goes out and plays a top club and they Pelham and Rye get penalized for it. It breeds an attitude that you should go look for easy games and pick up as many of those 4 index point blowouts that you can find
This seeding system is terrible. It will be extremely disappointing if the brackets end up loaded on one side. It hurts Section 1 in the state playoff’s. Lohud, do you know if the other sections do it differently? Or does the whole state work on this play off seeding system?
question for you Lohud. If Rye beats Ossining (0-14-1 the bottom team in the section) how many points do they recieve? Conversely if Rye loses or ties the best team in the section (Suffern?) how many points are recieved?
Hey, I know howto fix this stupid system that doesn’t have rye and pelham as the #1 and #2 seeds. Bring back the power leagues. No more suffern vs. Nyack games, no more mamk etb games, and most importantly all league games will mean something and be competitive. Just as important, you won’t have 75 people in the crowd at west point watching a rye cd fox lane championship game. Everyone knows Pelham and rye are the two best teams, it is just stupid that they’ll play in the semis, and make the championship game anticlimactic.
Gas prices are way down, the bussing that was supposed to save money saved nothing. Not having power leagues did nothing economically. The powers that be need to make these points at the next AD meeting, get facts and numbers and make the case!
Can Rye appeal its seeding? If they finish say 3rd or 4th after beating the top seed and playing a crisper schedlue is there an appeal process available to Rye?
It would be absolutely criminal to have Pelham and Rye on the same side of the bracket and not have the potential for them to meet at West Point.
MAMO not as explosive but only team in state to score 4 goals on SUFFERN and RYE , SOLID OFFENSE FOR MAMARONECK
The power league would fix the playoff problem, also as i have said before all leagues should have to play the same # of league games. I am sure the Conference 1 teams would love to schedule better competition but being required to play 16 league games, penalizes them with only 4 available non league games, where as ALL 3 other conferences can schedule 14 NON LEAGUE games huge disadvantage for conference 1 trying to be better for playoffs and trying to play better games
CONFERENCE LEAGUE PLAY
Each conference has an AD as the conference coordinator. Each team in the conference is represented by their AD. They then vote on how to play their league games. Conference 1 decided for 2 straight years to have a double round robin while Conference 2.3 and 4 decided to have a single round robin and that’s the rest of the story.
Power Leagues
The full meeting of all the hockey schools known as the WRPDIIHL voted to continue the Power League structure when the geographical league set up was proposed by the powers that be. The WRPDIIHL was over ruled and were told that hockey had to conform along with all the other sports. Case closed but we will continue to try.
Anything on the issue of playoff seedings being done perhaps by a committee instead of a point system that seems to reward teams with softer schedules and penalize those with challenging ones??
Thats a good question I will be interested to hear what Mr. Orlando says about the committee idea. Heres another problem with the current system. If anyone out here thinks coaches are not “playimg” this system they are wrong. Some coaches are delibrately playing the weaker schedule for non league games and going out of their way to climb as high as they can in the seedings for protection. Its border line unsportsmanlike especially by high school sports
Its a good thing Mr Orlando (I think) put a stop to one type of what ypu are talking about {good question} Coaches used to be able to add games in when a player DQ`d so the coach could determine when his player served the suspension. Coaches maniplated that. The other schedule maniplation was when teams would add easy games on at the end of the season to prop up their win totals for section seedings. To me, this is the same thing. I would stop short at saying coaches are making easy schedules for seeding advantages, BUT in order to guard agianst it a committee would settle it fairly and take the doubt out of peoples minds. Right now this is an extremely hot item in peoples minds
Hockey must follow the same seeding procedure as other sports . The powers that be will not entertain any other system. We will keep trying. The power leagues, although not perfect solved that problem.
Teams are allowed to schedule games if they have not reached their 20 game maximum at anytime during the season. That is a section rule for all sports.
Teams cannot add a game in order to avoid a suspension. If a player has recived a suspension he must sit the next regularly scheduled game not one that has been added.
Thanks for the answer Mr. O. I know you know this to be true but it looks as though both DI and DII are going to have teams seeded higher based on playing the easy soft schedule. Without mentioning names and getting people upset based on if the season ended today in DI there are at least 3 teams that will take advantage of their schedule and be seeded well above where they should be. In DII it looks like there are at least 5 teams
So, Mr. Orlando, are you saying that all sports in NY State follow this seeding procedure? With the bonus point given when you play a team that dominates a weak schedule?
Since Mamaroneck has 5 losses already and a game to play with Suffern, they may very well end up with a winning percentage of less than .750, while Fox Lane and possibly John Jay may end up with a winning percentage of .750 or above.
So D2 teams like Rye and Pelham who play Mamaroneck in nonconference games will actually get less bonus points than a D2 team that plays Fox Lane, despite the fact that Mamaroneck’s 5 losses are to Saratoga Springs(14-2 state #4 D1), Shenendehowa(11-3-1 state #5 D1), Suffern, White Plains and Pelham.
While it is true that teams know the deal when they make up their schedules, it still seems like a ridiculous system.
Pelham seems a likely 4 or 5 seed, as ETB has a tough schedule down the stretch. So, its actually better for a shot at Rye vs. Pelham final if Rye is a 2 or 3 seed, right? Go Foxes. Maybe Rye should throw a game just to be sure. LOL.
To for FOTG- I like your style and analysis. This weeksnd’s set with Bethlehem was a perfect example. If you told me both Rye and Pelham would win 2 goal games and the scores were 3-1 and 5-3, I would have been confident in pinning the 3-1 score on the Rye game.
Both teams are well coached and have players with good hockey sense. They make sure to cover their weakest link. Pelham plays to protect its soph goalie. The D almost never pinch and the third forechecker is always high. Rye D and third forechecker sometimes get low to try and score an elusive goal, knowing they have a senior stud in net in case their actions give up an odd man rush.
All I was giving the seeding in Section 1 no where else.
Mamo Rye game was not as close as score would lead one to believe. rye played a very conservative game and carried the puck in the mamo zone about 5 times. rye goalie looked out of sorts taking 2 penalties and seemed to fight the puck all night. Mamo came unglued in middle 3rd leading to almost another meltdown. Their D is thin and rye was happy to dump it in and look to prey on mamo breakouts Hagan had a spectacular goal to break the tie.
Big week for the tigers to get all lines clicking prior to Sat night
So how do the other sections handle seeding? Maybe they have a better system?
