Mamaroneck is really going to be tested, but this is a game that could really give the Tigers a push if they find a way to beat a team coming off a 1-1 tie at West Genny. Clarkstown is heading north, and should be improving steadily after the early stops and starts and stops.
Suffern is getting everything it wanted from a difficult upstate schedule, and the Mounties are finding ways to win close games against experienced teams they could see in the postseason. I’m heading for the Ice Hutch shortly. We’re still waiting for Pelham to get strong goal tending and scoring in the same game.
Don’t forget to check the LoHud Hockey Twitter page for updates on Rye and Pelham.
The schedule
McQuaid vs. Rye, 1:15 p.m. at Ice Hutch
West Seneca West vs. Pelham, 3:20 at Ice Hutch
Kennedy/Putnam Valley vs. Pawling, 4 p.m. at Trinity-Pawling
West Genesee vs. Suffern, 1:30 p.m. at Massena Christmas Classic
Mamaroneck vs. Ithaca, 1:30 p.m. at The Rink
Clarkstown vs. Giulderland/Mohonasen, 3:45 p.m. at Bethlehem

For those of you interested in the Nyack tournament, since the second round was cancelled, the original plan was to declare a winner after one day based on goal differential. What they have decided instead is that since NTZ and Pearl River each won in the first round, and are scheduled to face each other at the Palisades Mall on Wednesday 2/9/11 in a non-league game, that the winner of that game will be declared the winner of the Nyack holiday tournament.
It’s a shame the Mall Rink can’t seem to get their act together. No way to find 2 game slots this week? Ossining and Newburgh lose a game on their schedule that they likely won’t be able to make up.
Suffern scores would be greatly appreciated. Does anyone know the site for the massena radio station?
To much public skating money to lose this week.
The six high schools (3 teams) that use the Mall ice rink, Clarkstown, N/TZ, and SH/I, should better coordinate and seek better treatment than they have received. The amount they pay in ice fees should be enough leverage.
Besides the inabilty to re-schedule the tournament games this week, a few other things should be addressed.
– It’s silly that the Nyack/TZ Tournament games are 6 hours apart.
– There should be regular hockey varsity doubleheaders. Midweek, early evening game slots should be arranged back-to-back. Fans for all the local teams could stick around for both games. (Have the modified teams use the Sunday evening game slots.)
With South and North now combined there should be more midweek ice slots available? I would think the flexibility to do these things is there?

this is the place that runs Massena games on radio…you can click on “listen live now” top right of the page. Currently they are playing songs from my childhood

I just realized how bad music on AM radio was back then
The Suffern – WG game and the Massena – WN game are not scheduled to be broadcast on the WMSA site. We will have to rely on the blog updates.
Mamo losing 2-1 after 1. Ithaca Goalie is very good.
Any rye score mike? Twitter shows last night activity
Rye losing 2-1 after 1
suffern update 1-1 in 2nd
Mamo losing 2-1 after 2. Mamo outshot Ithaca in the 2nd 15-3
Rye losing 2-1 after 2
With just a few minutes left in the 3rd period Suffern is up 3 – 1 !
First, I’d like to throw a congratulations out there to Nyack/TZ. I know they were playing Newburgh, which historically (and presently) is not the highest caliber opponent, but it has been a LONG time since either Nyack or TZ (merged or not) has scored 10 in a hockey game. It must have felt really good to see that second digit up there on the scoreboard. I’m not advocating running up the score, and I don’t feel like they did in this case, but hopefully this is the kind of thing that will get this team moving and finish up with a strong second half of the season. It’d be nice to see them finally start on an upswing.
As for game slots at the mall, it was touched on above, but finding four more hours during a holiday week is rough. The mall relies on those public skating hours to generate some income and there is no way they would give that up. I think that’s why they schedule this tourney every year with the six hour gap, so they can have public skating during the day. If they held the tournament any time other than over xmas break, they could probably get more traditional ice slots and play the games back-to-back. Or if they looked to SOR to see if they could get ice time for the tourney over the holidays (even though their regular home ice is at the mall), they could probably get some better time slots as well.
As for Bundy’s point about the ice fees being leverage, unfortunately they are not. The rink is in a mall with a ton of foot traffic. The rink’s bread and butter is public skating, not hockey. A place like SOR, you are only going to for some sort of skating-related activity (hockey, public skating, figure skating). The mall, you have all those people in addition to those who are there because they just stopped at the Gap and Jamba Juice, and what the heck, I’ll try skating. It’s better than dumping $20 at Dave & Buster’s to try and win a $1.00 stuffed animal. Two hours of ice time for a game at the mall is about $850. I don’t know what the admission charge for pulic session at the mall is, but at SOR, for admission plus skate rental is $11 (give or take, depending on the day/time of the session). Assuming it is comprable, at $11 a head (since most people at the mall rent skates), if 80 people show up, the pulic skating is more lucrative. I have shown up early for games at the mall when they follow a public skate. They easily get more than 80 people. If the mall charged at the door for hockey games, that may change things. Then they are collecting their $850 plus half the gate and that could feasibly swing things in the other direction, but barring that, I wouldn’t count on them ever becoming as “High-School-Hockey-Friendly” as places like SOR, Brewster, and The Hutch.
Thank you Suffern Fan! Give us the game summary when you get a chance after the game…
Suffern 3-1 over West Genny final.
Suffern overcame adler being thrown out a schelling bench minor to beat WG 3-1 for the second straight time. Sounds like all these upstate games are close as usual and with Sufferns experience they have a knack for coming out on top. Great weekend.
bigby, heard your favorite song was “wildfire”?
Congratulations Mounties on showing the rest of NYS that Section 1 can compete (and beat) anyone!
Any final on the Mamaroneck/Ithaca game?
Rye loses 2-1
The rink at the Mall is a mandated public amenity. It’s not going anywhere. It is however operated by a private vendor that is looking to maximize profits.
It would take the 3 teams coordinating, ganging up if you will, to convince the Mall to be more hockey amendable.
The 3 high school hockey teams of the Mall must purchase in excess of $100 thousand in ice time? Probably more, but that is a fair guesstimate. That is a lot of weekday, mid-winter early afternoon slots that would not attract many people to public skating sessions.
I think a Tuesday, 5 pm to 10 pm high school hockey double headers could easily be “negotiated ”.
Anyone know who the 3 regulars North Rockland has been missing and why?
Mamroneck wins 3-2 in overtime. Scott Hagan scored with 21 seconds left to tie the game and Sam Christiensen scored in OT to win the game. Connor Ferguson had Mamo’s first goal.
Great Win! Congtats !
Congratulations Mamaroneck. Great day for Section 1 hockey!
Suffern played well all weekend, they certainly are a legitimate number 1 team. The two best teams in the tournament were Suffern and Williamsville North. They both have very skilled players. Massena and West Genesee were not in the same category as the other two. Suffern dominated the final today other than the 1st goal of the game West Genny was never in the game. Sufferns talent and speed took over from the well disciplined game WG plays.
It was hard to believe Suffern can survive an entire game playing only 3 defenseman. I hope 24 or 17 do not get hurt because the other guys will have no experience. But hey it works for them. Rob does a great job but he could complains constantly not many coaches are like that. He certainly has a quality team and has them ready to play. I will be suprised if they lose before reaching the final 4. They are fun to watch!!!
st.ant’s at iona game that was postponed couple of days ago is now scheduled

2-1 McQuaid over Rye.
McQuaid’s two goals were on power plays. They were a well coached team that moved the puck well, certainly on the PP goals. Just like yesterday Rye was plagued by too many penalties and against a very good team like McQuaid, eventually paid the price of the penalties.
For sure Rye stepped up its game from yesterday which is good because they were playing a far better team, far stronger then any teams played so far. They still have lots of room for improvement in all phases of play, and hopefully will continue this positive trend going forward.
A win was the goal but at least Rye is now getting more of a taste for tough opponents and the level of play they’ll need to reach to come out on top.
The Rye/Pelham game should be a huge, hotly contested dog fight between these two teams.
Pelham score?
Bigby loves the song “Wildfire”...almost as much as “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden”
Checked out the games at Ice Hutch.
Pelham game ended 3-3 Check out Mike’s updates. Twitter link above.
Rye looked okay. It was my first time seeing them this year.
The goalie looks very solid.
They skated 3 lines but only 2 lines played for the last 10 minutes.
I don’t know names so forgive me:
First line was 15, 16 and 22.
Next was 20, 19, 14.
3rd was 10, 18, 12.. I think the 3rd line had only one or two shifts in the third period.
Rye looked outsized. There are a few big kids on Rye but the bigs did not really use the body at all. 15 took a few penalties late.
The line of 20, 19, and 14 was the most effective. 14 was the best player on the ice for Rye. He had a lot of energy til the end. Great forecheck, and created a lot of offense.
Rye D looks pretty good. They defend well, but they have zero breakout.
Rye power play was not effective.
Pelham looked strong in all phases. They had a lot of pressure for most of the game. They dominated the OT but took a dozen high slapshots that missed the net altogether. There was a lot of hitting in the game. Mostly clean. Pelham took the body a lot. 10 and 2 looked really solid for Pelham.
The all-purpose dome next door to the hutch collapsed in the snowstorm. Coach W deserves credit for keeping the Hutch inflated.
I think the rest of the state has known for several years that section 1 can play with any section. 2 years ago Pelham and mamk were in the state championship games, and suffern should have won it last year. Rye also has performed well at the state level. I don’t think section 1 has anything to prove at this point.
Anyone know who played in goal for mamk?
Should be a barnburner, Pelham took a 2-0 lead over a physical and solid McQ and gave up the lead then two late pp ? goals. Pelham dominated totally today but settled for the tie. Rye looked a bit flat and we all know they will be ready for Wednesday at Playland for Pelham. Should be a good one.
Ned Bigby: #14 of rye is Ryan Rogers, a 3 sport (soccer, lacrosse) kid and younger brother of another really good Rogers who graduated in ‘08.
Have to say I’m surprised that Pelham did not not come away with a W as I felt WSW was not close to the level of McQuaid who Pelham got the better at least for the first 2 periods of their game yesterday.
Just as a follow up to North Country – was the D cut down to a rotation of 3 players? I’m sure that isn’t going over well with the bench – if it works I guess it will be accepted – problem is that in the past it hasn’t worked and this year the talent is there – just don’t get it – You look at the bench and wonder when some of the kids are going to get fed up with the short bench especially since the talent is there.
Why was Adler thrown out of the game?
What was the bench minor for?
Adler was ejected for a hit from behind at the at the end of the period. It was a very unecessary hit. Then Rob went to the scorers area with the officials at the end of the period complaining. He was given a bench minor. He does alot of complaining and if this was the WN game those penalties would have cost them. WG just was not talented enough to take advantage, Suffern did a great job killing it off. Suffern killed 1 1/2 minutes two down then another 2 1/2 one down to start the third. I believe WG may have had only one shot the entire time.
I am not sure how he rotated the D, however 24 and 17 were out together and neither were both off at the same time they rotated another player in there.
Suffern has a lot of talent the kids play hard and are very skilled. I dont know if the coaches are trying to intimidate people or what but most coaches do not stand with one foot on the boards throughout the game. Big contrast from watching WG with all kids sitting and coaches under contrl behind the bench. Suffern is more than 2 goals better but WG coaching staff did a good job in playing a style to keep game close. Just was odd, Suffern is a good team and as usual play a great game starting with defense.
Gilligan,
You would rather go with at least two solid d-pairs but Suffern has gone with a three-man defensive rotation in the past and been quite successful with it. This is a talented bunch but in crunch time, any coach is going to shorten his bench as much as he needs to in order to win.
its about time suffern checks from behind all the time
“Bigby loves the song “Wildfire”...almost as much as “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden””
Hahaha
Ned could you expand on this for us. Like maybe Ned Bigby’s top ten.
Willy North beat Massena 7-1 in the consolation
Old Stripes. Thanks for the chuckle.
I’m sure the blogging community would be most interested in Ned Bigby’s top ten AM songs from the stone age.
(just between us, my list would be heavy Beatles and the Jackson 5…I guess I liked bands that also had those Saturday morning cartoons…talk about cross-over appeal)
Old School Mountie,
Isn’t that the point – if you have the talent and you want to win the states isn’t it worth playing more than 3 D – I understand shortening the bench if you don’t have the talent – there is no question that Suffern has the talent to play 5 to 6 D – I hope the lack of development during the season doesn’t come back to hurt them at the year end – just to make it clear I don’t have a kid on Suffern’s team so I’m not airing sour grapes – I just think the goal for Suffern should be the year end tournament and developing the depth – if the 3rd line and 5/6th d don’t get an opportunity to play and screw up on occassion – I don’t see how it benefits the team – I could be wrong
Ned, any list you compile you can’t leave out Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds…you just can’t. LOL
Bigbys favorite is the Santa Esmeralda version of “Don’t let me be misunderstood”
“Wildfire” that song is replaying in my mind now, thanks clarkstown s. It’s about a horse that runs away?
Around the same time there was another song called “Shannon”. I think thats about a dog that drowns, “drifting out to sea”.
What is it about 70’s music and sad endings for pets.
Of course any current HS player reading todays blog is saying, “WTF…are they talking about”
Ned, good call on the Beatles, only because I was listening to Abbey Road last night while watching Rangers, Islanders, Devils, without sound.
V-Rd.
Love those guys. “Don’t Pull You’re Love out” (Am I even allowed to say that?)...I think that one was on their Greatest Hit album.
I put them right there with Dr Hook and the Medicine Show.
Clarkstown S
I would go with the Elvis Costello cover.
ginger-
They generally do run three lines and 4-5 D in pretty much every game (more in the blowouts, of course). This is the first time this year I am hearing about them shortening up the bench. So they definitely have been grooming the third line and back end of the defensive rotation for the long haul.
While I was not on the game, I am guessing that if Schelling shortened up his bench in the game, it probably had something to do with Adler being tossed. From the reports I am reading on here, rather than a minor and a 7.5 minute misconduct for checking from behind, they gave him a major and a game misconduct (I am basing that on North Country’s post about them being down two men for the first minute and a half of the period – the Adler penalty and the bench minor – and one man for another 2.5 minutes, meaning there was a 4-minute major in there). Adler is the center on the third line, so I am guessing that rather than pull a kid off the bench to replace him in a game like this, he probably started skipping the third line which meant shortening up the D as well (no need to play 5 D if you are only running two lines of forwards). Again, this is all speculation based on what I have seen at their other games and what I read above since I was not at the game.
Al, I believe it was a “pony”. Ned, you do kinda remind me of EC’s old bass player Bruce Thomas.
As my wife has told me several times – I’m sure I’m not expressing my point well and I’m also wrong – My point is that the talent is there and there is no reason to shorten the bench with the talent that is on the team – not sure what the forward lines have to do with the d rotation – in the past Suffern has played 2, 2 1/2 lines and rotated 3 d – my point is that in the states they have been worn down – In my view, if the coaches want to shorten the bench, maybe they should wait until the state semi’s or final game in the third period – I don’t think they should do it with 12 games to go in the regular season – more to my point it hasn’t worked in the past – high tempo from more lines and more d will over whelm the opponents – if you have the depth – and Suffern does – I think it is foolish not to use the depth to your advantage – I’m not in the locker room but unless there is a discipline issue I just don’t get it – Some of the kids on the bench seem to be really good players on their AAA-AA-A travel teams – I guess I have a different opinion of good coaching/philosophy.

Shannon was about a dog.
Al sorry you have “Wildfire” in your head…that’s rough.
maybe this will help:
1-8-7-7-KARS-4-KIDS…K-A-R-S KARS-4-KIDS …DONATE YOUR CAR TODAY
Now my head is going to explode.
not to break up the reminiscing with hockey talk but,
I noticed that Clarkstown lost 5-2 to Bethlehem.
That sounds like a pretty respectable showing.
2 more goals from the first line. Need to get more from the 2nd line.
They should win today against Guilderland.
Cookie, you out there?...any reports from last night?
Wildfire was a one hit wonder by Michael Martin Murphy…a great song!! I have it on a songwriters cd. Shannon was Henry Gross sometime in the mid -late70’s….so i’m told lol.
clarkstown game should have been 2-2. levy was brutal.
Oh well…this thread is over 24 hours old…and since nobody is probably checking here any more…
Ned Bigby’s top 5 things you will NEVER read on the LoHud hockey blog.
From Postman: – “Let’s not be so tough on the kids. I think all section 1 hockey players should have equal playing time. There should be a maximum goal differential. If a team is up by 5 goals, they shouldn’t be allowed to score. And schools should supply hot cocoa to the players after each game”
From Hockey Mom: – “I am so sick of White Plains. That mayor is an abusive pig. Who cares about WPHS hockey? Hey, somebody give me some quarters…and a flack vest… I want to go to the Galleria.
From Cold as Ice: – “Hmmm…ya know, Spectator…You make some excellent points…I never thought of that. I think you might be on to something there. I appreciate your comments.”
From LoHud Hockey: – West Seneca…West Seneca West…whatever… you say “tomato” I say “tomahto”... no biggee… Hey Mike. Thanks for changing the title of the blog. It is my honor to share that name with you”.
From b: – “I’m not quite sure exactly how I feel about hockey”
I’m still checking, and I just let out a belly laugh.
Ned….hysterical!
Ned Excellent post, you missed a couple:
From CoachChap – ” I think I will wear khaki’s today”
From Mike Dougherty – “This team is terrible, I would rather be hitting golf balls at the range”
From chshl fan – “The Catholic League is inferior to public schools”
Two rink announcements:
Suffern will now play “Wildfire” instead of “Crazy Train” when they enter the ice.
Mamaroneck will now play “I love a Rainy Night” instead of “Welcome to the Jungle” when they enter the ice.
We had joy, we had fun we had seasons in the sun…....
