We’re getting back to a normal routine after the snow, with a number of local teams facing real tests. Rye is likely to be pushed a little harder in the next two days, so we’ll know a little more about the Garnets after they deal with the likes of McQuaid and West Seneca.
It will be interesting to see how Suffern does upstate against Willy North, which has to be feeling the sting of last year’s elimination all these months later. The Mounties have not played a game in 10 days and have not been challenged since a Dec. 11 win against West Genesee.
There’s a chance I will sneak out and watch some of the Kennedy/Putnam Valley vs. Brewster game this afternoon. I’m going to watch Pelham and Rye tomorrow at the Ice Hutch. Check the LoHud Hockey Twitter page for updates from those games. And if you’re out watching, leave us an update.
The schedule
Iona Prep vs. Fordham Prep, 9 p.m. at Ice Hutch
Kennedy/Putnam Valley vs. Brewster, 3:30 p.m. at Brewster
McQuaid vs. Pelham, 5 p.m. at Ice Hutch
West Seneca vs. Rye, 7 p.m. at Ice Hutch
Pearl River vs. Ossining, 10:45 a.m. at Palisades
Newburgh vs. Nyack/Tappan Zee, 6 p.m. at Palisades
St. Francis vs. Stepinac, 1:40 p.m. at Ice Hutch
Suffern vs. Williamsville North, 4:30 p.m. at Massena Tournament
North Rockland vs. Guilderland/Mohonasen at Schenectady, 11:45 a.m.

Mike-
It may be nitpicky, but Rye’s opponent today (and Pelham’s tomorrow) is actually West Seneca West (rather than just West Seneca). There are two teams up there in West Seneca (similar to the way we had Clarkstown North & South before this year), but rather than North & South they are East & West. So as silly as it sounds to say, the two teams are West Seneca West and West Seneca East. The team that came down here this week with McQuaid to play our locals is West Seneca West.
Also, the Nyack Tournament will not be rescheduling their second round. It will be a one-day tournament between Pearl River, Ossining, NTZ, and Newburgh with the winner of the tourney being decided by goal differential. Not sure how the tie-breakers will work.
Pearl River beat Ossining 2-1 in overtime at palisades on a breakaway goal by Connor McMorrow. Pearl River dominated whole game but Ossining goalie played amazing. Pearl River deserved the win.
any predictions on the Pelham vs Mcquaid game? Pelham has been playing well on defense as always and there offense has really improved along with their team play(power play, short handed etc.). I don’t know to much about Mcquaid but i do know they usually have a strong team.
anyone have any info on west seneca west. are they state ranked, their record, how good they are? thanks
Score of JFK game?
any suffern update
Suffern wins 4-3 in shoot out
Redgate ties the score in the last minute with the goalie pulled again. Willy North must hate Redgate! Apparantly Stark made a sick save in the shootout to preserve the win, which Suffern took by a 2 -1 count.
who scored
Sanchez in Shoot Out
5 hole…Check the twitter link above for Mike’s notes on KPV
Anyone have anything from the Hutch?
two by jaeger, a last min redgate goal ( 15 seconds left ) and sanchez and jaeger score in the shootout
step-st.francis was postponed
-Good to see Sufferen pull out a big W over North. – Interested to see how Pelham rebounds off a good win against New Ro. – Wonder if Iona well be able to start turning things around tonight.
Pelham lost 4 – 2
update on Rye?
West Genesee beat Massena 2-1 and will face Suffern tomorrow. And there was a big save by Stark, who dove and used the glove to protect an open net before Sanchez moved them into the championship.
North Rockland lost to Guilderland/Mohonasen 5-3.
Rye won 2-1
rye 2, west seneca west 1…both teams are small and not that spectacular…no hitting, no dominant players
iona 4, fordham 0
barry gets shutout
iona completely different team since rcds game…pellow didnt dress due to injury…mcdermoot chiariello back…tracey, logerfo, chiariello with most of the offensive production
Iona outstanding tonight against Fordham. Total team effort on both ends of the Ice . Fordham was never in the game….
Correction to above post by “scores” above : West Seneca Beat Rye 2-1 not the other way around . Game was prior to Iona V Fordham Game at Ice Hutch last night ….
“Scores” had it right. Rye won 2-1.
Felt WSW was not a strong team and just a bit above the caliber of teams Rye has played so far.
Garnets need to step it up.
Oooooppppps , sorry slacrosse . You’re correct !
So does Suffern’s win in a shootout officially go down as a tie on their record?
Goes as a tie.
NYS doesn’t have shootouts until playoffs, but the tournament does it to see who advances.
Ta-Da:
Yes, it counts as a tie, not a win. The shootout is only used to determine who advances in the tournament.
Did Pelham just die or was McQuaid hiding for 2 periods. Interesting to see who wins today Rye or McQuaid. Rye vs Pelham January 5th.
Watched both games. I think Rye and Pelham both were not at their best. Pelham looked tired in the third after coming on real strong in the first period. McQuaid was quite physical and Pelham had problems with that. Pelhams usually strong defense was quite mediocre and they did not have that hard forechecking going. Rye won and Rix was tested for once and he pushed Rye through. We shall see what happens today.
Thanks for the clarification
2-1 McQuaid over Rye.
McQuaid’s two goals were on power plays. They were a well coached team that moved the puck well, certainly on the PP goals. Just like yesterday Rye was plagued by too many penalties and against a very good team like McQuaid, eventually paid the price of the penalties.
For sure Rye stepped up its game from yesterday which is good because they were playing a far better team, far stronger then any teams played so far. They still have lots of room for improvement in all phases of play, and hopefully will continue this positive trend going forward.
A win was the goal but at least Rye is now getting more of a taste for tough opponents and the level of play they’ll need to reach to come out on top.
The Rye/Pelham game should be a huge, hotly contested dog fight between these two teams.
