I’ve stumbled upon proof that hockey officials really do know the rules.
Many of the men we are going to see powering up and down the ice ahead of the action and blowing the whistles during the upcoming season have participated in a number of recent seminars. The latest was sponspored by the Westchester Ice Hockey Officials Association and run by USA Hockey’s seminar staff at Hommocks. According to Rocky Russo, there was classroom work along with a session on the ice that included skating techniques.
These guys also take written exams.
Thank you to Rocky for the photos. In the second frame, I’m guessing the officials are either power skating or breaking for donuts and coffee.

Good thing Rocky gave you info. Nice jab at the officials with the doughnut remark I can see why they dont talk to the press.
great work officials can’t wait to see your work this year, we thank you SECTION ONE COACHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why was Rocky taking pictures instead of skating out there with the rest of the refs? How did he become exempt?
kind of like a coach sending you pictures of practice. teams practice but that dos not meen they are good.
Rocky has great skating ability! (cough cough) thats why he is exempt!
Listen, not everyone can be a hockey ref. First off u need to be able to skate. You have to respect the guys in stripes for doing a thankless job. Most of these guys are very good and put in a good effort. Of course there are a couple power hungry mental cases, but it could said that there are slot more mental coaches and parents than there are refs.
Coaches as mental cases? never…..hahahahah…Now parents are for sure insane!
Is it true that Tim Collins is not going to Iona??
They have no coach at present. They are interviewing candidates. The coach who arrives will have good talent to work with but must get the team chemistry and attitude corrected. The parents and boosters create a lot of pressure for the coach. Good luck to whomever gets it.
Wow, I was not aware of that. I thought Tim would be a good fit there. Do you know what happened?
Not so sure. I hear they lost Riccardi, Nolan, and the goaltending is still not very strong. Might be weakest team they have had in a while
