It sounds like the week went well for Suffern, which is heading up to Utica in advance of tomorrow’s NYSPHSAA semifinal contest against unbeaten West Genesee. There will be a practice this afternoon some dinner, and then plenty of down time for the imagination to run wild.
“Everyone’s nervous and excited,” Mike Gorton said after practice on Wednesday. “The intensity is definitely up. Everybody’s ready to go.”
Having an entire week to prepare was probably a good thing. It can take that long for a team coming off an emotional win to pull everything back together and realize the next win could take even more heroics.
“This team is incredible,” Mounties coach Rob Schelling said. “We had an emotional game and the kids came back and had a great week of practice. They’re not getting ahead of themselves. Obviously, we’re playing the No. 1 team in New York State on Saturday, and they’re focused and ready to give their all.
“You know, if they are nervous, it’s not showing. I think the nervous people are the coaches, the kids a pretty calm and cool.”
I have to start thinking about packing a bag in the next hour or two.
