This was pretty exciting. I just got back and rattled off my story in half an hour. Now I’m hungry. More details later…
OK, I’m back. I was in a state of disbelief near the end of this one, because I really underestimated Mount Pleasant (Pleasantville/Westlake/Briarcliff/Valhalla). I had heard they nearly lost to League 5’s Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville recently. I’ve seen E/T/B, and they’re really good, but I guess I underestimate them as well because they’re League 5, and some of their best players are freshmen.
They had Rye up against the wall, but the Garnets kept their heads on straight. They scored with seven seconds left in the third period to send the game to overtime, and Kyle Iobbi finished it a few minutes into that period. They were a little fortunate, with both of those goals coming on power plays.
Jordan Eck had three goals and two assists. He was getting ‘Jordan’ chants from the Rye student body. A good quote from coach Jason Friesen that I didn’t get to use in the story:
“This was a more… Jordanesque I like to say – type of a game tonight. He hasn’t had a lot of those this year. We’ve been kind of waiting for him to get like that, because when he gets like that the rest of this team scores and flows a lot better. When he’s at his best, he does stuff like that. He makes you go, ‘Jesus, that was really pretty.'”
My favorite play of Eck’s tonight was when he took it from center ice, got checked by a Mount Pleasant player from his right, then another from his left, stayed on his skates and kept control of the puck, and brought it all the way in, eventually passing it out from behind the net to assist Iobbi’s first goal with 9:12 left in the second period to make it 3-2 Mount Pleasant. Eck had scored a nice goal of his own three minutes earlier. He weaved through the whole Ice Cats team and then did the same move twice in a row like an instant replay – one time to beat the two defensemen, then to beat the goalie.
Mount Pleasant’s Nick Carcione was great, too. I saw him come skating off Mount Pleasant’s bench about a minute and a half into the game, moving about two speeds faster than anyone else on the ice. He looked intense. I thought to myself, “That guy’s either going to score a lot of goals, or he’s going to hurt somebody.” He ended up scoring a lot of goals.
Three goals and an assist by my count, though I don’t think the assist showed up on the official scorer’s sheet. I’m pretty sure the first goal for Mount Pleasant by Eric Perlowitz was off a rebound of a shot by Carcione. Then Carcione scored two in a row to make it 3-1 Mount Pleasant. Then he scored what would have been the game winner to make it 5-4 late in the third period. He almost made this his night.
And he wasn’t just fast and intense. He had some moves to rival Eck’s. All in all a good game to watch. And a sweatshirt was all I needed to keep warm. Playland is good like that. Ebersole should be just as nice tomorrow (Thursday, Rye Town/Harrison vs. White Plains).
Rye narrowly averted getting their second league loss tonight. White Plains has lost two league games (to Rye and Brewster) and Rye Town/Harrison has lost one (to White Plains). So if White Plains can repeat against the Titans, Rye will be the only League 2 team with one loss. The Garnets still have one game left against RT/H and White Plains.
