I’m sitting here watching a rebroadcast of last night’s Islanders-Rangers game, and I just heard a commentator wish a speedy recovery to Somers/North Salem hockey players Daniel Paesano, Jimmy Aruilio, and Steve Aruilio, who apparently have minor injuries resulting from a car accident.
I called head coach Michael Pontillo to find out some more. Apparently the three were about a mile away from Brewster Ice Arena on Saturday night, on their way to play Clarkstown South. They swerved to avoid a deer, flipped the car, and went right through a telephone pole, bringing it down but luckily not causing any of the wires to come loose, which would have created an even more dangerous situation.
The three players only have bumps, bruises, and a couple of minor cuts, which Pontillo said was amazing considering the amount of broken glass. The game was cancelled, of course.
A Somers/North Salem assistant coach works for the Rangers, which explains the mention on the broadcast.
Neither Paesano, a junior defenseman, Jimmy Aruilio, a junior forward, nor Steve Aruilio, a freshman forward, is expected to play today versus Harvey, but Pontillo said they should be back next weekend. Good luck, guys.
