Put your pencils down. The midterm exams are over and we’re back to a regular schedule. We’ve got a couple of decent games starting with Iona Prep and RCDS, which are both going well now. It’s going to be physical and should be competitive because the Gaels do get up for these crossovers.
Brewster and Yorktown are opposites in terms of style, and this one could be interesting unless the Huskers stop grinding and try going stride for stride with the section’s most prolific offense. Pearl River is going for a hat trick against Nyack/Tappan Zee, but we’ve all been told how difficult it is to beat an opponent three times in a season. Suffern isn’t going to have any problems against Ithaca, which has won five in a row since Mamaroneck went up and dropped the Little Red to 2-7 at the end of December.
Friday, Jan. 27

RTH vs. Fox Lane, 5:20 p.m. at BIA
Brewster vs. Yorktown, 7:20 p.m. at BIA
Rye vs. Byram Hills, 9 p.m. at BIA

Sleepy Hollow/Irvington vs. Clarkstown, 4:40 p.m. at Palisades

I lost some brain cells along the way and can’t remember if we played high school games during midterm exams or stayed home to study back in the days we had to walk uphill both ways to school and never texted anyone to complain about the hardship.

No games scheduled

RCDS 6, Clarkstown 2

ETB 7, Scarsdale 4
White Plains 5, Tri-Town 4
Avon Old Farms C 5, Harvey 4
It was hard not to admire the determination of a Fordham Prep team that clearly doesn’t have the depth of talent Rye puts on the ice each season. Grit can be an effective weapon. It can also induce whistles, and force opponents to figure out another way to win.
And the Garnets did just that, picking up a 4-1 victory last night at Playland. Click here for the box score.
There was no real flow in this game, and Rye didn’t have any scoring runs that were worthy of the highlight reel. Still, the Garnets met high intensity with great energy, and found a way to win. A loss to Mamaroneck is now officially a hiccup. They handled a bigger, physical team.
“What slows us down is getting in a game where we can’t play full strength,” head coach Jason Friesen said. “The game we want to be in is one where we’re running through lines and have the kind of energy to get up and down the ice.”
The penalty kill was good. The power play wasn’t bad.
A number of chances went just high or wide. At least three shots took paint off the pipes. Rams goalie Richard Gullo was busy all night and he came up with 39 saves. I did see an issue at the other end. The cavalry was slow to respond a couple of times when Rye goalie Aidan Talgo gave up a rebound on a perimeter shot, leaving the puck sitting on the doorstep for a couple of breathless seconds. A good team … Pelham … will bury that almost every time.
It was a rough week for Section 1 on these lists, everybody slid back to the pack. The loss to Massena cost Suffern a couple of notches, but it won’t be long now until any debate is settled on the ice. Don’t forget to check out the New York State Sportswriters Association website.

We get another glimpse of RCDS against Section 1, and Clarkstown is an improving team. I would still make the Wildcats a solid favorite, but the Mall Rats could hang if they get some production from the second line. Check the Twitter feed. I’m going and will post some updates.
I would imagine Rye is tired of practicing, so Fordham Prep is likely to get hit with a world of intensity. Scarsdale gave ETB a run in the first game, we’ll see if the Raiders have improved any. Leave a score if you’re out watching.

Yep, it’s a long one. The Alarm doesn’t get enough credit for being perhaps the best anthem band of the 80s. I saw them live a couple of times, and went home from each show exhausted. Give this song a chance if you’ve never heard it, it makes adrenaline move?
The senior goalie made 36 saves in a 3-0 upset of Rye, then picked up another win against White Plains, extending the Tigers win streak to four in a row.
Honor Roll Chris Ramondelli, New Rochelle: Gave the Huguenots a 3-2 win over Clarkstown when he scored with three-tenths of a second remaining.
Neil Jacobsen, Yorktown: Scored three goals to bring Yorktown back in a 3-1 win over Carmel.
John Hangach, Brad Alexander, Ryan Harker, Mahopac: Each scored a third-period goal to help Mahopac post a 4-3 win over John Jay.
Coaches are invited e-mail nominations with necessary details by noon on Monday
It’s a slow week due to mid-terms. Even hockey players have to study. I’m shutting off the computer and going back to bed, then I’ll figure out the rest of my week. Right now, I’m planning to do RCDS vs. Clarkstown tomorrow and will probably end up at Brewster vs. Yorktown and Pelham vs. Mamaroneck before the week’s out. There’s a Super Bowl team that might force me to change up, but we’ll squeeze in some hockey, too.

Also, Brewster fans are great and they cheer us on all the way.”
